We flew to Sri Lanka on November 26 early in the morning. For three days we traveled to the historical places of Sri Lanka: Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy, etc. It was unforgettable, but I will not write about it here, it will take a lot of time. On November 28, late in the evening, we came to rest in Unawatuna at this hotel for about a week (from November 28 to December 6). I chose this hotel on purpose back in Moscow, and I was not disappointed!!! This is an amazing place. The ocean is noisy right outside the windows of the room, the view from the hotel is breathtakingly beautiful. The hotel is located on the edge of Unawatuna Bay and all of it is in front of your eyes, I have never seen such a beautiful sunset into the ocean as there. The location of the hotel is also very convenient, because the noise of the disco in the center of Unawatuna was heard here, and how tourists in the center endure loud music almost until the morning on weekends, I can’t even imagine! At the same time, you can walk to the shopping streets in 10 minutes, and by tul-tuk you can get there in two! The only liquor store is right in front of the hotel.
We booked a room on the second floor, with two separate beds (there is only one in the hotel) and were satisfied. Yes, of course the room is small, there is no TV, and it is not needed here at all, why, when there is such beauty around and there is something to see, and we only slept in the room. There is Wi-Fi, although for some reason it was buggy for a couple of days. There is no refrigerator - this is the only thing we missed - we wanted to have cold drinks, but we got out of this situation by asking to bring ice, and it was brought to us without question for free right on the terrace, where we rested after walking or swimming, sipping rum with Coca cola generously adding ice to the drink.)) But, if you are used to all-inclusive service, you certainly don’t come here, here is another vacation, in my opinion much more wonderful!
We were practically alone in the hotels (apparently lucky) and the entire terrace was at our disposal (no one bothered us), there was a feeling of complete relaxation. For the weekend, local residents from the center of Sri Lanka came to rest, but we very rarely crossed paths with them, greeting each other when we met. The beach is right next to the hotel, only in the morning and in the evening locals swim on it, otherwise it is empty, only two or three tourists came from other hotels to our small cozy beach. But no one bothered us, after swimming and having a snort, right in a bathing suit we went to the hotel territory (10 meters) and there we lay all alone on sunbeds (very comfortable, by the way, with a soft mattress), admiring the beautiful view of the ocean. The ocean is very calm, the bay is protected by a coral reef. I also chose this hotel because here, unlike most places in Sri Lanka, you can snorkel. I snorkeled a lot, the reef was killed of course (not the Red Sea), but there is something to see, a lot of different fish, I saw a stingray twice, once a turtle. To jump in the waves, we rode a tuk-tuk towards Weligama, you can also take a bus (only 40 rupees). We went by tuk-tuk in Galle for 4 hours, the tuk-tuk showed beautiful places and waited for us while we went around the entire fort and rested in a cafe, brought us to the supermarket, to the shops that we asked for. This pleasure cost 800 rupees for two, it seemed to us that it was very cheap 6-7 bucks, but then Russian tourists told us that they traveled like that for 600 rupees, though for 2 hours. You have to bargain with tuk-tukers, which we didn’t do , or they did it very stupidly (but that's another story!))) On the other side of the bay, behind the Stupa, there is a beach, or rather, even two beaches, one after the other. They are both called Jungle Beach, very nice and beautiful place, but windy. I snorted there too, but I didn’t see much difference with the hotel reef. We went there on foot, through the jungle (very cool), part of the way back too, but when we saw a monitor lizard and realized that we were lost, we took a tuk-tuk to the hotel in some village. There is much more to write about the surroundings of Unawatuna, but it's time to return to the hotel.
Meals: we only took breakfast, when there were people in the hotel, there was a small buffet with a hot order, and when we were alone, we ordered breakfast, there are few options, but everything is delicious and always fresh fruit! In the evening, we also had dinner at our restaurant, because we tried to eat at another restaurant and realized that it was cheaper and tastier here. Once they bought king prawns and cooked them for us, another time they asked for lobsters (they must be ordered in advance) and the next day they showed us freshly caught lobsters and asked if they suit us for dinner, they suited us more than !!!))) Those the dishes that they have on the regular menu are also very good, we ate mostly fish and shrimp, we will eat meat and chicken in Moscow.) Very tasty, even better than in Italy pizza with seafood. But, if you don’t like a lot of spices and heavily peppered, be sure to order “but spicy”, otherwise you may not finish the dish!
Service at the hotel is excellent, unobtrusive, very friendly! Tips are not extorted, but with such service, you want to give yourself. They will always help, prompt, and with my mildly mediocre knowledge of English, this was very important. Unfortunately, I don’t remember names well, so I can’t personally thank everyone here, but I want to say a HUGE thank you to EVERYONE and the managers at the reception and the maid Florence and the waiters in the restaurant and the chefs, in short, to everyone for our great vacation!
P.S If you go to this hotel, a personal request, grab chocolates! I took too few of them, and when I left, I realized that the hotel employees really like our chocolate, they were delighted with it, and I could not give this gift to those people who made my vacation wonderful!

Sri Lanka travel itinerary

A ready-made tourist itinerary is offered here to help those who are planning their first independent trip to the island of Sri Lanka, and it can also be useful as a basis for other itineraries. The itinerary is for 5 days of travel for two adults, including absolutely all costs of $570, which is approximately the price of a 5-day guided group tour, which usually does not include various options such as entrance tickets.

However, it is worth considering that all the same, the costs indicated here have arisen solely because of the craving for comfort in all its manifestations. Please note that the costs of the specified route can be reduced many times, by simple savings on hotels and travel.

So, all these hotels cost in the range of 6000-9000 rupees, and the movement was carried out by tuk-tuks (out of love for individual transport), but the entire journey can be easily overcome by public transport. By the way, a slightly Russian-speaking helper who imposed his services estimated the route at $ 1200 without dinners and something else :)

We recommend planning transfers between cities in the morning - so there will be more time for inspection and the road will not be so tiring, because. air and asphalt have not yet had time to heat up. All the necessary information on the schedule of buses, their routes, etc.

Remember that any transport in Sri Lanka with AS potentially threatens with a cold, because in the understanding of the Sinhalese, the colder the better. In such a case, it is better to take something like a sports sweatshirt or sweater with you. A few lyrics about the train ride Colombo - Kandy - Nuwara Eliya: if you have a strong spirit of adventurism - you don't need a survey car at all - you can enjoy the most picturesque landscapes from ... a vestibule with doors wide open. For photographers, this is a unique and extreme chance to take panoramic photos without obstacles in the form of glasses, the unreliability of this enterprise lies in the fact that the railway is old, the terrain is hilly, the tunnels are narrow, in some places the distance between the doors of the train and the wall is about 30-40 cm But what landscapes!

The entire excursion program is an adaptation of standard tourist routes and was planned in advance, taking into account the personal preferences of the participants, therefore it does not include a number of traditional places like tea factories and waterfalls. We hope our article will help you in compiling your own fascinating route around the island of Sri Lanka and you will appreciate all the advantages of independent travel!
