From their lips, honors are given to the Almighty for His inexpressible mercy to His creatures. In the Christian tradition, it is generally accepted that the entire angelic host is divided into three categories (triads). Each of them includes three angelic ranks. The position of an angel in one category or another depends on his ability or, as they say, knowledge of God.

The first is the highest triad

The names of the angels that make up the first - the highest - triad and directly co-appearing to the Throne of God are Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones. Translated from Greek, the word "seraphim" means fiery. This fully reflects their flaming love for the Creator and the ability to arouse it in others. The Lord endowed the Cherubim with all the depth of knowledge and an abundance of wisdom. They know everything that is accessible to the knowledge of a created being. The thrones are filled with the highest grace of God, as a result of which the Lord, dwelling in them, does His highest justice.

The second is the middle triad

Next is the middle triad. The names of the angels entering it are Dominions, Forces and Powers. The first of this angelic rank - Dominance - encourage people to dominate their passions, to overcome in themselves the temptations and manifestations of the evil will of those spirits of darkness that are hostile to God and people.

The angels that make up the second group of this rank, the Forces, are filled with a divine fortress. It is through them that the Lord works miracles and sends down such an ability to His holy righteous and saints. By the grace sent down through the angels of this rank, they work miracles even in the days of their earthly life.

Next comes the authorities. Their destiny is to tame demonic forces and repulse enemy temptations aimed at human destruction. In addition, they strengthen the spirit of the ascetics of God in their laborious work.

Beginnings - Angels of the lower triad

And finally, the third category. The names of the angels that make up this rank are the Beginnings, the Archangels and the Angels. This group in the angelic hierarchy is the lowest link, which is closest to people. Each component of this triad also has its own purpose.

The beginnings are a kind of people's rulers, Guardian Angels of entire countries and continents. So, from the Holy Scriptures one can learn that the patronage of the Jewish people was entrusted to the Archangel Michael. The beginnings are set to govern the universe. By their dignity, they are higher than the Guardian Angels of individual people.

Archangels - Heralds of God

The Archangels following them are the highest Angels, the heralds of God. They are entrusted with informing people about everything great and glorious that the will of the Most High sends down. Suffice it to recall the great mission of the Archangel Gabriel, sent to the Virgin Mary. Archangels strengthen people's faith in God and enlighten their minds to the knowledge of His will.

We know from Holy Scripture that there are seven of them. Evidence of this is contained in the Bible book of Tabitus, where the Archangel in a conversation with him mentions that he is one of the seven Angels. Also in the Revelation of John the Theologian, one can read about the seven spirits at the Throne of God. In church tradition, all the names of Angels are mentioned. The list includes Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Jehudiel, Barahiel, and Jeremiah. Let's talk in more detail about each of them. Briefly about each of the Archangels

Archangel Michael occupies a leading place among the supreme angels. In the icon-painting tradition, it is customary to depict him as a warrior in full combat attire, trampling a serpent or dragon. A similar tradition has developed on the basis of the fact that in ancient times in heaven there was a clash between the Angels - the servants of God, and the spirits that fell away from Him. The fallen angels, whose names are also given in the Holy Scriptures, led by their leader Dennitsa, were cast down from heaven and became the servants of Satan.

Archangel Gabriel is often depicted holding an ancient lantern in one hand, inside which a candle burns, and in the other a mirror. This carries a deep meaning. A candle hidden in a lantern is a symbol of fate, hidden before its fulfillment, but even after that it is comprehended only by those who look into the mirror of their conscience.

The name of the third Archangel Raphael means mercy. Therefore, it is customary to depict him holding a vessel with healing oil in his hands, which alleviates the suffering of the afflicted.

Uriel is the patron saint of those who devote themselves to science. He is depicted holding a lightning bolt down in his hand. With the fire of divine love, he ignites human hearts and enlightens the minds to the knowledge of truths.

Selaphiel is called the Archangel of Prayer. Accordingly, his image is characterized by a prayer pose and a rosary. His hands in a reverent impulse are pressed to his chest, he himself is immersed in communion with the Almighty.

Archangel Yehudiel is depicted on the icons holding a golden crown in one hand - a reward for the true servants of God, and in the other - a whip consisting of three cords, with which he protects them to the glory of the Holy Trinity.

And finally, the Archangel Barahiel. He brings God's blessings to those who in their lives have been the executor of His commandments. Suffice it to recall that Barahiel was one of the three angels who appeared to Abraham and Sarah under the oak in Mamre and announced the imminent birth of their son Isaac.

The names of these higher Angels can be described as masculine in their sound. The names of female angels do not occur in this context.

Angels are representatives of the third group of divine spirits

But the closest to us are the Angels - representatives of the third, last link of this rank. They are entrusted by the Creator with special care for us. Among their host are the Guardian Angels given to each of us on the day of holy baptism. The names of angels are unknown to us, but they are invisibly present near us throughout our life path. We do not see them, but we can feel the closeness of our patron and mentor. To do this, we will try to learn about it as much as possible.

Angels are related to us by the fact that the Lord created them, like us, in his own image. Despite their incorporeality, he generously endowed them with the ability to love, to know the world and to be models of the purest and most intelligent beings. These are examples of God's perfections, wholly obeying the will of the Creator. Angels are endowed with the ability not only to communicate with each other, but also to understand what comes from the depths of human souls. This gives us the opportunity to converse with them in prayer. Nothing so pacifies and brings peace as direct communication with the Guardian Angel.

We know from the heritage of the holy fathers that the fallen angels, whose names have been crossed out from the Divine books, left empty places in the host of heavenly spirits that people must fill. This indicates that we are destined to become part of the Angelic host. From this we can judge how pure and holy we must be in our earthly life.

Iconographic image of an angel

We learn about how Angels communicate directly with living people and the souls of the dead, first of all, from the Bible. It often gives a description of the angels who appeared to people. Usually they are presented as young men dressed in snow-white clothes. The iconographic tradition also corresponds to this. Wings, which are depicted in paintings, contain a purely symbolic meaning. Their task is to show the swiftness of the flight of the divine spirit.

Incorporeality and asexuality of spirits

In 787, at the seventh Ecumenical Council in the city of Nicaea, it was decided to depict Angels only in male form. This is consistent with the fact that the Scriptures mention mostly male names of angels. Whether they are male or female, in this case is a pure convention. Angels are spiritual beings, and spirits do not have flesh, respectively, they are asexual. The spirit can appear to people in the guise in which it wishes, and therefore any image of it is symbolic. In principle, the names of female angels have the same right to exist as men, but we adhere to established traditions.

It should be borne in mind that the images of cupids accepted in Western European painting have nothing to do with angels. They are remnants of paganism. From the point of view of the Orthodox Church, all these creations of the Renaissance are nothing but the fruit of the artistic imagination of the authors. You can talk about their aesthetic merits, but in no case should you look for any spiritual and philosophical significance in them.

The Limitation of Our Knowledge of the Nature of Angels and Archangels

Our knowledge of angels is limited to what the Holy Scriptures and patristic literature reveal to us. A lot remains hidden from us. For example, the names of angels and demons are given only in the context of certain events, there is no list of them.

The same picture is observed in the literature of other religious denominations. When we open the works of the Holy Fathers devoted to the questions of Sacred History, the names of the Angels and Archangels mentioned in them also make up only an insignificant part of the entire vast host.

The same can be said about the number of angels and demons. We cannot know how many there are. For example, the holy Apostle John the Theologian writes in his “Revelation” that he saw “those and thousands of thousands” of Angels at the Throne of God. These words carry only information about a very large number, without dwelling on specific values. In the same way, attempts to list the names of Angels and demons, of which there are "thousands of topics and thousands of thousands," are unfounded.

The Supernatural Power of Angels

And it is also necessary to mention the supernatural power of angels. The Bible provides many examples of this. Recall at least how the Angels struck the inhabitants of Sodom with blindness, and they did this without touching them, but only by an effort of will. Another Biblical episode paints a picture of how the Angel of God shut the mouth of a lion ready to devour Saint Daniel. Archangel Gabriel punishes Zechariah with temporary dumbness, who doubted the prophecy he had uttered. In the New Testament, we read how an angel freed the holy apostles from prison, with one desire causing the chains that bound them to fall from them. This list can be continued for a very long time. The angels of God, whose names the Scripture reveals to us, and their nameless brethren, perform supernatural deeds thanks to the power that the Lord has given them.

Names given at holy baptism

In our everyday life, there is the concept of "Angel's Day", that is, name day. It is a mistake to understand that the word "angel" always means one of the host of those incorporeal beings that were discussed in the article. In this case, the saint is often meant, whose name the birthday man received at baptism, and not the Angel at all. The Orthodox name Ivan can be given to a person born on the day of the memory of John the Theologian, and Peter on the day of the apostles Peter and Paul. Both the Greek and Hebrew words for "angel" mean "messenger". Angels often performed this role in the texts of the Bible, but its authors often give this term another meaning. Angels are the incorporeal helpers of God. They appear as humans with wings and a halo of light around their heads. They are commonly mentioned in Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious texts. Good and evil angels, messengers of God or the devil, converge in the decisive battle described in the book of Revelation. Invisible and immortal. According to the teachings of the church, angels are sexless invisible spirits, immortal from the day of their creation. There are many angels, which follows from the Old Testament description of God - "the Lord of hosts." They form a hierarchy of angels and archangels of the entire host of heaven. The early church clearly divided nine types, or "ranks," of angels.

Angels served as mediators between God and his people. The Old Testament says that no one could see God and stay alive, so direct communication between the Almighty and a person is often portrayed as communication with an angel. It was the angel who prevented Abraham from sacrificing Isaac. Moses saw an angel in a burning bush, although the voice of God was heard. An angel led the Israelites during their exodus from Egypt. Hosts of angels appear several times on the pages of the Bible. Thus, a choir of angels announced the birth of Christ. Archangel Michael commanded numerous heavenly hosts in the battle against the forces of evil. The only angels in the Old and New Testaments who have their own names are Michael and Gabriel, who brought the news of the birth of Jesus to Mary. Most of the angels refused to identify themselves, reflecting the popular belief that revealing a spirit's name would diminish its power.

NINE ANGELIC RANKS.

In Christianity, the host of angels is divided into three classes, or hierarchies, and each hierarchy, in turn, is divided into three faces. Here is the most common classification of angelic faces attributed to Dionysius the Areopagite:

The first hierarchy: seraphim, cherubim, thrones. The second hierarchy: dominions, forces, authorities. The third hierarchy: principles, archangels, angels.

seraphim those belonging to the first hierarchy are absorbed in eternal love for the Lord and reverence for Him. They directly surround His throne. Seraphim, as representatives of Divine Love, most often have red wings and sometimes hold lighted candles in their hands.

Cherubim know God and worship Him. They are depicted as representatives of Divine Wisdom in golden yellow and blue tones. Sometimes they have books in their hands.

Thrones uphold the throne of God and express Divine Justice. Often they are depicted in the robes of judges with a rod of power in their hands. It is believed that they receive glory directly from God and bestow it on the second hierarchy.

The second hierarchy consists of dominations, forces and authorities, which are the rulers of the heavenly bodies and the elements. They, in turn, shed on the third hierarchy the light of glory they have received.

Through the third hierarchy, contact is made with the created world and with man, for its representatives are the executors of the will of God. In relation to man, the beginnings control the destinies of peoples, the archangels are heavenly warriors, and the angels are the messengers of God to man. In addition to the listed functions, the host of angels serves as a heavenly choir.

This plan of celestial arrangement served as the basis for the creation and theological substantiation of the structure of the celestial spheres as the basis of the medieval picture of the world. In accordance with this plan, the cherubim and seraphim are responsible for the first push (Primum mobile) and for the sphere of the fixed stars, thrones - for the sphere of Saturn, domination - Jupiter, forces - Mars, authorities - the Sun, the beginning - Venus, archangels - Mercury, angels - the Moon celestial bodies closest to the Earth.

Beginnings are legions of angels protecting religion. They constitute the seventh choir in the hierarchy of Dionysius, following directly before the archangels. The beginnings give strength to the peoples of the Earth to find and experience their destiny.
It is also believed that they are the guardians of the peoples of the world. The choice of this term, as well as the term "authorities", to designate the ranks of the angels of God is somewhat doubtful, since c. The "Epistle to the Ephesians" refers to "principalities and powers" as "spirits of wickedness in high places", against which Christians must fight ("Ephesians" 6:12).

ARCHANGELS

ANGELS

Angels live in the world of the Spirit, the heavenly world, and we live in the world of matter. Naturally, they are drawn to the house. Therefore, if you want the Angels to be comfortable with you, you need to make your world - thoughts, feelings, environment - more like their world. To paraphrase the "Epistle of James" - we can say this: draw near to the Angels and they will draw near to you. (James A:8). Angels feel good surrounded by thoughts of peace and love, and not in an atmosphere of irritation and aggression. You may not be able to get out of your head, say, a rude driver who cut you off on the road in winter. However, it is quite possible to free yourself from irritation by starting to communicate with the angels for at least a few minutes a day. Get rid of irritants first. Turn off the radio and TV, go to a separate room or to your favorite corner of nature; imagine angels (a picture of your favorite angel placed next to it helps) and communicate with them. Just tell the angels about your problems. Talk like you're talking to your best friend. And then listen. Be silent and wait for the thoughts that the angels will send you. And soon your relationship with the angels will turn into an upward spiral; they will help you feel more positive. A positive state will bring you closer to the angels.

Avdiel. The name Abdiel is first mentioned in the Bible (1st Chronicles), where he is a mere mortal, a resident of Gilead. Further, in historical and religious books, Abdiel (meaning "servant of God") is described as an angel.
The first mention of the angel Abdiel is found in the Book of the Angel Raziel, written in Hebrew in the Middle Ages. However, the most complete description of the deeds of Abdiel is given in John Milton's Paradise Lost, which retells the story of Satan's rebellion against God. During this rebellion, Abdiel was the only angel who remained faithful to God and refused to rebel against him.
Satan tried to convince Abdiel that it was he and his followers who were destined to rule in the kingdom of heaven, to which Abdiel objected that God is more powerful, since He created Satan, and not vice versa. Satan said that this is just another lie of the Father of Lies. Abdiel did not believe him, pushed the other rebellious angels aside and hit Satan with a "powerful blow of the sword."

Adrammelech("king of fire") is one of two throne angels commonly associated with the angel Asmodeus, and also one of two powerful thrones present in Milton's Paradise Lost. In demonology, he is mentioned as the eighth of the ten main demons and as a great servant of the Order of the Flies, an underground order founded by Beelzebub. In rabbinic literature, it is reported that if Adrammelech is invoked by a spell, he will appear in the form of a mule or peacock.
Adrammelech, who is identified with the Babylonian Anu and the Ammonite Moloch, is mentioned in various sources, such as, for example, the "History of Magic", where he appears in the form of a horse; he is considered the god to whom the children of the Sepharavit colony in Samaria are sacrificed, he is mentioned both as an idol of the Assyrians and as a fallen angel defeated in battle by Uriel and Raphael.

Azazel(Aramaic: רמשנאל, Hebrew: עזאזל, Arabic: عزازل) - according to the beliefs of the ancient Jews - the demon of the desert.
The legend about Azazel as one of the fallen angels arose rather late (not earlier than the 3rd century BC) in the Jewish environment, and is recorded, in particular, in the famous apocryphal book of Enoch. In the book of Enoch, Azazel is the leader of the antediluvian giants who rebelled against God. He taught men to fight, and women - the art of deceit, seduced people into godlessness and taught them debauchery. In the end, he was tied, by the command of God, to a desert rock. This is what the apocryphal literature says.
In the Pentateuch and in the Talmudic literature, the name of Azazel is associated with the idea of ​​a common atonement for the sins of the people. This idea was embodied in a special ceremony: two goats were brought; one was destined (by lot) to the "Lord" as a sacrifice, the other - for the remission of sins. The latter was "released" into the desert, and then thrown into the abyss from the cliff. It was he who was called the "scapegoat". In non-Jewish translations, and later in Jewish tradition, the word "Azazel" came to be seen as the name of this goat.

Asmodeus. The name Asmodeus means "creator (or being) of judgment". Initially, Asmodeus is a Persian demon, later Asmodeus entered the scriptures, where he was known as the "fierce devil". Asmodeus (also known as Saturn and Marcolph, or Morolf) is responsible for creating the carousel, music, dance and drama.
In the legends, Asmodeus is considered the father-in-law of the demon Bar-Shalmon. Demonologists claim that in order to summon Asmodeus, it is necessary to bare his head, otherwise he will deceive the caller. Asmodeus also oversees gambling houses.

Belphegor(The God of Revelation) was once an angel in the rank of beginnings - the lower triad in the traditional hierarchy of angels, consisting of nine ranks or ranks. Later, in ancient Moab, he became the god of licentiousness. In hell, Belphegor is a demon of ingenuity, and when summoned, he appears in the guise of a young woman.

Dabbiel(also Dubiel, or Dobiel) is known as the guardian angel of Persia. In ancient times, the fate of each people was determined by the actions of the guardian angel, who represented this people in heaven. The angels fought among themselves in order to win the mercy of God, which will decide the fate of each specific people.
At that time, the guardian angel of Israel, Gabriel, was deprived of the grace of God, because he allowed himself to intervene when the angry Lord wanted to destroy Israel. Gabriel's attempts to stop the Lord were partially successful; although most of Israel was devastated, some noble Jews managed to escape and were taken captive by the Babylonians.
Dabbiel was allowed to take the place of Gabriel in the circle close to the Lord, and he immediately took advantage of this situation. He soon arranged for the Persians to conquer large tracts of territory, and the great expansion of Persia in the period from 500 to 300 IT. BC. was considered the merit of Dabbiel. However, his reign lasted only 21 days, and then Gabriel convinced God to allow him to return to his rightful place, removing the ambitious Dabbiel from there.

Zagzagil- the angel of the "burning bush", who played an important role in the life of Moses. He is the head of the guards of the Fourth Heaven, although it is said that he lives in the Seventh Heaven - in the dwelling of God.

Zadkiel. The name Zadkiel (other spellings: Tzadkiel or Zaidkiel) means "the righteousness of God." Various religious writings describe the appearance of Zadkiel in different ways. Zadkiel is one of the leaders helping Michael when the archangel enters the battle.
It is also said that Zadkiel is one of the two leaders of the Shinanim order (together with Gabriel) and one of the nine "rulers of heaven", as well as one of the seven archangels sitting next to God. Zadkiel is "the angel of benevolence, mercy, memory and the leader of the rank of dominions."

Zophiel("seeker of God") - a spirit called by the prayer of the Master of Arts in Solomon's witchcraft rites. He is also one of the two leaders of Michael. Milton mentions Zophiel in Paradise Lost as informing the heavenly host of the impending attack of the rebellious angels, while in Friedrich Klopstock's Messiah he is the "harbinger of hell".
The American poet Maria del Occident chose Zophiel as one of the main characters in her poem Zophiel, inspired by the story contained in the apocryphal Book of Tobit. In this poem, Zophiel is presented as a fallen angel who retains the features of his former virtue and beauty.

Yehoel is considered an intermediary who knows the "unpronounceable name", as well as one of the kings of the presence. He is also considered "the angel holding back Leviathan" and the leader of the rank of seraphim.
He is mentioned in the "Apocalypse of Abraham" as a heavenly choirmaster who accompanies Abraham on his way to Paradise and reveals to him the course of history.
It is also assumed that Yehoel is the former name of Metatron, while the Kabbalistic book "Berith Menuha" calls him the main angel of fire.

Israel("aspiring to God") is usually considered an angel in the rank of heyot - a class of angels surrounding the throne of the Lord. They are usually compared to cherubim and seraphim. According to The Book of the Angel Raziel, Israel ranks sixth among the throne angels.
In the Alexandrian Gnostic Prayer of Joseph, the patriarch Jacob is the archangel Israel, who descended into earthly life from pre-existence. Here Israel is "the angel of God and the chief spirit", while later Israel is presented as the archangel of the will of the Lord and the main tribune among the sons of God. He also calls himself the angel Uriel.
Israel is also mentioned by mystics of the Geonic period (7th-11th century) as a celestial being, whose task is to summon angels to sing of the Lord. The philosopher Philo identifies Israel with the Logos, while Louis Ginsberg, author of The Legends of the Jews, calls him "the personification of Jacob before the Throne of Glory."

Kamail("he who sees God") is traditionally considered the chief in the rank of power and one of the sephirah. Magical teaching says that when he is called by a spell, he appears in the form of a leopard sitting on a rock.
Among the occultists, he is considered the prince of the lower aisles and is often referred to as the ruler of the planet Mars, as well as one of the angels who rule the seven planets. In Kabbalistic teaching, on the contrary, he is considered one of the ten archangels.
Some scholars claim that Kamail was originally the god of war in Druid mythology. Eliphas Levi, in his book A History of Magic (1963), says that he personifies divine justice.

As the brightness of the morning star (Lucifer) surpasses the light of all other stars, so the greatness of the king of Babylon surpasses the glory of all Eastern monarchs. The Babylonians and Assyrians called the morning star, respectively, Belit, or Istar. Others have suggested that the phrase "son of the dawn" may refer to the crescent moon. The Devil acquired the name Lucifer after the early Christian theologians Tertullian and St. Augustine identified him with a shooting star from a passage in Isaiah. The legend of the rebellion and expulsion of Lucifer, as presented by Jewish and Christian writers, depicts Lucifer as the main one in the heavenly hierarchy, as outstanding in beauty, strength and wisdom among all other creatures. Raguel. The name Raguel (variant spellings: Ragiel, Rasuil) means "friend of God." In the Book of Enoch, Raguel is an archangel tasked with ensuring that the behavior of other angels is always respectable. He is also the guardian angel of the earth and the second heaven, and it was he who brought Enoch to heaven.

According to the Book of the Angel Raziel, Uziel is one of the seven angels at the throne of the Lord and one of the nine overseeing the four winds, he is ranked among the forces, and is also called one of Gabriel's "lieutenants" during Satan's rebellion.

Uriel, whose name means "fire of God", is one of the leading angels in non-canonical writings. He is called differently: seraphim, cherub, "regent of the sun", "flame of God", angel of presence, ruler of Tartarus (hell), archangel of salvation and, in later writings, Fanu-ilom ("face of God"). The name Uriel could come from the name of the prophet Uriah. In Milton's Ontology, Cosmogony, and Physics (1957), Walter Currie writes that Uriel "gives the impression of a devout, but not too receptive, physicist with a bent towards atomistic philosophy." In The Second Book of the Oracle of the Sibylline, he is described as one of the "immortal angels of the immortal God", who on the Day of Judgment: "will break the monstrous latches of the indestructible gates of Hades and plunge them to the ground, and bring to judgment all the suffering, and the ghosts of the ancient Titans and giants, and all who were swallowed up by the Flood... and they will all stand before the Lord and his throne."

The word "angel" is Greek, meaning messenger. This name was given to the Angels from the service of their salvation of the human race, for which they are used by the All-good God and which they fulfill with holy zeal and love. The Apostle Paul said: “Are not the whole essence of the ministry of the soul, sent into service for those who want to inherit salvation?” (Heb. 1:14).
So “the Angel Gabriel was quickly sent from God to the city of Galilee, whose name is Nazareth” (Luke 1:26) to the Blessed Virgin Mary to announce to Her that She was chosen to be the Mother of the Word of God, accepting mankind for the redemption of mankind. So, the Angel of the Lord at night opened the doors of the dungeon, in which the twelve apostles were imprisoned by envious Jews, and, bringing them out, said: “Go, and become in the church, speak to the people all the words of this life” (Acts 5:20), that is, the teaching of Christ, which is life. On another occasion, an angel led the apostle Peter out of prison, who had been thrown there by the impious king Herod, who had already killed the apostle James Zebedee and who wanted to amuse the God-killing people of the Jews with a second, pleasant execution for him. Miraculously delivered from prison, the Apostle, convinced that he was seeing not a vision, but the deed itself, said: “Today, truly, God has sent His angel, and I have been taken out of the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the people of Judea” (Acts 12:11) . However, the ministry of the Angels does not consist in only contributing to the salvation of the human race: but from this ministry they received their name among men, and this name was given to them by the Holy Spirit in Holy Scripture.

The time of the creation of angels is not definitively indicated in the Holy Scriptures.; but, according to the teaching generally accepted by the Holy Church, the creation of Angels preceded the creation of the material world and man.

Angels are made from nothing. Suddenly seeing yourself created in marvelous grace and bliss; what gratitude, reverence, and love they felt for the Creator, who gave them both existence and spiritual pleasure! The contemplation and glorification of the Creator became their uninterrupted occupation. The Lord Himself said of them: “When the stars were made, praise me with a great voice, thou my angels” (Job 38:7). These words of Holy Scripture clearly prove that the Angels were created before the world we see and, being present at its creation, glorified the wisdom and power of the Creator. They were created, like the visible world, by the Word of God: “Those,” says the holy Apostle Paul, “everything was created, even in heaven and even on earth, visible and invisible, if thrones, if dominions, if principles, if authorities: every By this, and about Him, you have dwelt” (Col. 1:16).

Here the Apostle, under the name of thrones, dominions, beginnings and authorities, understands the various offices of the Angels. The Holy Church recognizes three such officials; each rank, or hierarchy, consists of three ranks.

The first hierarchy is made up of Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones; the second - Dominions, Forces and Powers; the third - Beginnings, Archangels and Angels.

The teaching about this division of the Angels is expounded by St. Dionysius the Areopagite, a disciple of the holy Apostle Paul, who, as we have seen, names some ranks in his writings. Those closest to the Throne of God are the six-winged Seraphim, as Saint Isaiah the prophet saw in his vision. “Videh,” he says, “the Lord sitting on the throne is high and exalted, and the house is full of His glory. And Seraphim I stand around Him, six wings to one, and six wings to another: and two of them cover my face, two cover my legs, and two fly. And I called to one another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts: fill the whole earth with his glory” (Isaiah 6:1-3).

According to the Seraphim, the God-wise, many-eyed Cherubim, then the Thrones, and in order the other Angelic ranks, are coming to the Throne of God. The Angels stand before the Throne of God with great reverent fear, which is poured into them by the incomprehensible majesty of the Godhead, not with the fear that repentant sinners feel and which is taken away by love, but with fear that endures for ages and is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, - the fear that terrible is God to all those around him. From the unceasing contemplation of the immeasurable majesty of God, they are in unceasing blissful frenzy and rapture and express it with unceasing praise. They burn with love for God and in self-forgetfulness, in which they exist in God, and no longer in themselves, they find inexhaustible and endless pleasure. According to their ranks, they are endowed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit - the Spirit of wisdom and reason. Spirit of advice and strength. Spirit of God's fear.

This variety of spiritual gifts and different degrees of perfection by no means produce competition or envy in the Holy Angels: no! They have one will, as St. Arseny the Great said, and they are all filled with grace-filled consolation in God and do not feel any lack. According to this grace-filled unity of will, the Holy Angels of the lower ranks with love and jealousy render obedience to the Angels of the higher ranks, knowing that this obedience is obedience to the will of God. “We clearly see,” says St. Dimitry of Rostov, “in the book of the prophet Zechariah that while the Angel was talking with the Prophet, another Angel came out to meet this Angel, commanding him to go to the Prophet and announce what was to be done with Jerusalem. Also in Daniel's prophecy we read that the Angel commands the Angel to interpret the vision to the Prophet."

In general, all Angels are sometimes called the Heavenly Forces and the Heavenly Host. The leader of the Heavenly Host is the Archangel Michael, who belongs to the seven spirits standing before God. These seven angels are: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Salafiel, Uriel, Yehudiel and Barahiel: These seven spirits are sometimes called Angels, sometimes Archangels; St. Demetrius of Rostov ranks them among the rank of Seraphim.

Angels are created in the image and likeness of God, just as man was subsequently created.

The image of God, as in man, is in the mind, from which it is born, and in which thought is contained, and from which the spirit proceeds, assisting the thought and enlivening it. This image, like the Archetype, is invisible, just as it is invisible in humans.

He governs the whole being in the Angel, just as in man. Angels are beings limited by time and space, and therefore have their own appearance. Only nothing and an infinite being can be formless: an infinite being is formless because, having no limit in any direction, it cannot have any shape; and nothing is formless, as having no being and no properties. On the contrary, all beings are limited, the greatest and smallest, however subtle, have their limits. It is these limits, or ends, of the being that make up its outline, and where there is an outline, there is certainly a view, even if we do not see it with our coarse eyes. We do not see the limit of gases and most vapors, but these limits certainly exist, because gases and vapors cannot occupy an unlimited space, they occupy a certain space, corresponding to their elasticity, i.e., the ability to expand and contract.

One God is invisible, as an infinite being. In relation to us, Angels are called incorporeal and spirits. But we humans, in our state of fall, cannot in any way be taken as a basis for drawing up correct concepts about the visible and invisible world. We are not what we were made to be; and again renewed by repentance, we do not become what we are in an ordinary passionate position. We are a fickle and wrong yardstick. Angels in Scripture

What can we say about Angels? What are our literary sources? Naturally, Holy Scripture. The very word “Angel” is ours, Russian, in fact, not a Russian word at all, but the Greek “ἄγγελος”, which literally means “messenger, messenger”. But this is also not the original form of this word, but the literal translation of the Hebrew word מלאך "malach". This word also means "messenger, messenger" and comes from a Hebrew root that means the verb "to send." What can we conclude from this? The word "Angel" does not describe to us the nature of these beings. What kind of spirits they are, what their nature is, we cannot say. We can only say of their ministry that they are "ministering spirits."

In Hebrew, instead of the word "Angels", the word "malachim" is used. If you read the Old Testament in Hebrew, this word will be used very often there. Moreover, the word "malachim", as a "message", can be used in a double sense. On the one hand, this is the message of God as such, impersonal, addressed to a person, on the other hand, the word “malach” can denote a living being, the spirit that transmits this message.

In the Holy Scriptures, among other things, the word "Angel" can be used not only for incorporeal spirits, but also for prophets. Before you is the icon "John the Baptist, the Angel of the Desert." It is no coincidence that John the Baptist is depicted with wings, since here there is a direct reference to the text of the Gospel of Matthew (11:10), which quotes an even more ancient text (Malachi 3:1): “For he is the one about whom it is written: behold, I send my angel before you, who will prepare your way before you." Another word used for celestial spirits is אלוהים "Elohim". If you open the first book of Scripture, the Book of Genesis, in Hebrew, in the first chapter, the first stanza, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth," the word "Elohim" will be used. The word "Elohim" will be used in the Bible both to refer to God, along with "Yahweh", and to refer to Angels.

Angels in the Old Testament

An important role in the formation of the doctrine of angels was played by the ancient Jewish apocrypha, which is called the "Book of Enoch". This is a work of the III-II centuries BC. In particular, the apostle Jude refers to this book in his epistle (verse 14), quoting it: “Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them, saying: “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His holy angels ...”. The same text is mentioned by ancient writers, by Origen, by Tertullian, until the late Middle Ages the Book of Enoch was very popular. But what is interesting is that its text was unknown to us until the 18th century. It has been preserved in its entirety only in the canon of the Ethiopian Bible, only in the sacred language giyz. Angels in the New Testament

There are also many references to angels in the New Testament. Archangel Gabriel proclaims

Since the details of the fall of part of the angelic world are not directly related to the cause of our salvation, we will find practically no mention of this in Holy Scripture. The same John of Damascus testifies to the incomprehensibility of angelic nature: “Only the Creator knows the form and definition of this (angelic) essence.” But what we can say for sure about them is that they are spiritual and incorporeal. "The spirit has no flesh and no bones," we read in the Gospel of Luke (24:39). According to the interpretation of the holy fathers, the sensual images in which Angels appear (numerous phenomena are described in Sacred History, in the Old and New Testaments) are not a reflection of their nature, but only their temporary state.

Blessed Theodoret explains: “We know that the nature of angels is incorporeal; they take on images, in accordance with the benefit of those who see, ”so that the one who looks at them is not afraid, but at the same time understands that before them is not an ordinary person, but really a messenger of the Lord. Saint John of Damascus says: “Angels, appearing to worthy people by the will of God, are not what they are in themselves, but are transformed in accordance with how the beholder can see them.”

We can also say about the relationship of Angels to space and time that, in the words of John of Damascus, they are “not held back by walls, doors, locks, or seals ... and stay in places that can only be comprehended by the mind.” Numerous testimonies of both Holy Scripture and later descriptions of miracles associated with angels tell us that angels instantly move from one point of the universe to another, and nothing holds them back. Accordingly, they have more freedom than humans in terms of space and time.

The perfection of the angelic nature is expressed in their special approach to God. They are endowed with the highest knowledge, understanding, but not omniscient, like the Lord God. Only part of the knowledge that they possess is open to angels, and thanks to which, according to apocryphal texts, they control the universe. The holy fathers also raise the question of the relationship between an angel and a person: who is more worthy in his calling? There are two points of view on this matter. On the one hand, we can say that the Angel is certainly more majestic and his nature is more perfect than human nature. On the other hand, many holy fathers argue that the Angels are diminished before man by the fact that, unlike him, they do not have the ability to create. In this man is even higher than the angels, and more like God.

God is the Creator, and a person can be a creator, but Angels are not creators. And many holy fathers insist on this in principle. John of Damascus speaks of the Lord: “The Creator of Angels, who brought them from the non-existent into being and created them in His own image” and denounces those who “call angels the creators of whatever essence ... For ... Angels are not creators.”

About the number of angels, we can only say that it is limited, but very large. The prophet Daniel (7:10) describes the angelic host as “thousands of thousands and ten thousand” (these are millions and tens of millions). Cyril of Jerusalem wrote about it this way: “Imagine people, starting from Adam to this day: their multitude is great, but it is still small, in comparison with the angels, who are more. They are ninety-nine sheep; and the human race is only one sheep.” Here Cyril of Jerusalem refers us to the parable told by the Lord that the good shepherd leaves 99 sheep for the sake of one lost sheep, and sets off in search of it in order to carry the lost sheep on his shoulders and return it to the flock. What is the ministry of angels? This, of course, is serving God, chanting His greatness and fulfilling His will, because angels are ministering spirits, and their purpose is to serve God. If we recall the book of the prophet Isaiah (6:2-3), it speaks of his vision of the Lord sitting on the throne, and the seraphim stood in front of the throne, constantly singing a song to God: “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts! The whole earth is full of His Glory!” Constant, unceasing, eternal praise. Similar images are found in the book of Revelation, which speaks of animals, of a tetramorph, which also serves before the throne of God. "Angels contemplate God... and have it as food," says John of Damascus. Examples of the service of Angels to God as an instrument of Divine Providence in relation to the visible world and man, we read in Holy Scripture. This is the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, the salvation of Lot with his daughters, whom the Angels lead out of the destroyed city. All this is a manifestation of the service of the Angels and their fulfillment of the will of God. One of the types of indirect service of angels to God can be the service of guardian angels. After baptism, each person is assigned a guardian angel, who must lead the soul of this person to salvation. In this, the Providence of God is also manifested, which means that this is one of the options for the service of angels to God. In ancient times, it was believed that cities, kingdoms, and peoples also had guardian angels. In particular, the Archangel Michael was considered the patron saint of the Jewish people. By the way, the Holy Scriptures mention the Guardian Angels of individuals in the Gospel of Matthew (18:10): “Look, do not despise any of these little ones; for I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” When the angel takes Peter out of prison, the apostle comes to the house where the congregation of Christians is, stands at the door and knocks. How angels are portrayed

The classic robe of an angel is a tunic, a himation (a cloak thrown over a tunic). Attributes are wings, as a symbol of speed, lightning speed of action. Angelic ranks

seraphim

Of all the ranks of heaven, the Seraphim are the closest to God; they are the first participants in divine bliss, the first to shine with the light of magnificent divine glory. And what most amazes and astonishes them in God is His infinite, eternal, immeasurable, unsearchable love. They in all their strength, in all their depth, incomprehensible to us, perceive, feel God precisely as Love, through this approaching, as it were, to the very doors, to the Most Holy of Holies of that “unapproachable Light” in which God lives (1 Tim. 6:16 ), through this entering into the most intimate, most sincere communion with God, for God Himself is Love: “God is loved” (1 John 4:8).
Have you ever looked at the sea? You look, you look at its boundless distance, at its boundless expanse, you think about its bottomless depth, and ... the thought is lost, the heart stops, the whole being is filled with some kind of sacred awe and horror; to fall prostrate, to close oneself before the clearly felt, boundless majesty of God, displayed by the boundlessness of the sea. Here is some, although the weakest, similarity, a barely noticeable, thin shadow of what the Seraphim are experiencing, constantly contemplating the immeasurable, unsearchable sea of ​​Divine love.
God-Love is fire, and the Seraphim, constantly clinging to this fiery Divine Love, are filled with the fire of the Divine primarily before all other ranks. Seraphim - and the word itself means: fiery, fiery. The flaming Divine Love, by the inexpressibility of Its mercy, by the immensity of Its condescension to all creatures, and above all to the human race, for the sake of which this Love humbled itself even to the cross and death, always leads the Seraphim into an indescribable holy awe, plunges them into horror, makes everything shudder. their being. Cherubim

If for the Seraphim God appears as a fiery burning Love, then for the Cherubim God is a shining Wisdom. Cherubim incessantly delve into the divine mind, praise, sing of it in their songs, contemplate the divine mysteries, penetrate them with trepidation. That is why, according to the testimony of the Word of God, in the Old Testament the Cherubim are depicted crouching over the Ark of the Covenant.
“And make,” the Lord said to Moses, “two Cherubim out of gold… Make them on both ends of the lid (of the Ark). Make one Cherubim from one side, and another Cherubim from the other side ... And there will be Cherubim with wings spread upward, covering the lid with their wings, and their faces will be towards each other, the faces of the Cherubim will be towards the lid ”(Ex. 25: 18-20) .
Marvelous image! So it is in heaven: Cherubim with tenderness, with fear, look at the Divine Wisdom, explore it, learn from it, and, as it were, cover its secrets with their wings, keep them, cherish, revere them. And this reverence for the mysteries of Divine Wisdom is so great among the Cherubim that any bold inquisitiveness, any proud gaze at the Mind of God is immediately cut off by them with a fiery sword.
Remember the fall of Adam: the forefathers, contrary to the commandment of God, boldly approached the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, became proud of their minds, wanted to know everything like God; they set out, as it were, to rip off the veil that hides the secrets of Divine Wisdom. And, look, immediately one of the guardians-keepers of these secrets descends from heaven, one of the servants of God's Wisdom - Cherubim, with a fiery turning sword, expels the forefathers from paradise. So great is the zeal of the Cherubim, so strict are they towards those who boldly encroach on the unknown mysteries of heaven! Be afraid to test with your mind what you need to believe!
If, according to St. Basil the Great, “one herb or one blade of grass is enough to occupy our whole thought with the consideration of the art with which it is produced,” then what can be said about that abyss of wisdom that is open to the Cherubim? The Wisdom of God, as in a mirror, imprinted in the visible world, the Wisdom of God in all the construction of our redemption, is all “the manifold Wisdom of God, ... in a hidden mystery, God foretell the world before the age for our glory” (Eph. 3:10; 1 Cor. 2:7)…

Thrones

Of course, you know what a throne is, with what meaning this word is often used among us? They say, for example, "The King's Throne" or "The King's Throne", "The King said from the height of the Throne." With all this they want to show dignity, royal greatness.
The throne, therefore, is the personification of royal majesty, royal dignity. So there are their Thrones in heaven, not our material, soulless ones, made of gold, silver, bone or wood and serving only as symbols, but intelligent Thrones, living bearers of the greatness of God, the glory of God. Thrones, primarily before all the ranks of the angels, feel, contemplate God as the King of Glory, the King of the whole universe, the King who creates judgment and justice, the King of Kings, as “Great, Strong and Terrible God” (Deut. 10:17). "Lord, Lord, who is like You?" (Ps. 34:10) ... “Who is like You in bosekh. Lord, who is like Thee: glorified in the saints, marvelous in glory” (Ex. 15:11). “Great is the Lord and highly praised, and His majesty has no end” (Ps. 145:3) ... “Great and has no end, high and immeasurable” (Bar. 3:25)! All these hymns to the majesty of God, in all their fullness, depth and truth, are understandable and accessible only to Thrones.
Thrones not only feel and sing of the majesty of God, but they themselves are filled with this majesty and glory, and others are allowed to feel it, poured, as it were, into human hearts, filling them with waves of majesty and glory of the Divine.
There are moments when a person is somehow especially clearly aware of the greatness of God in his mind and with some special strength feels the greatness of God in his heart: peals of thunder, the flash of lightning, marvelous views of nature, high mountains, wild rocks, worship in some magnificent large temple - all it often captures the soul so much, strikes the strings of the heart so much that a person is ready to compose and sing laudatory psalms and songs; before the perceived greatness of God, he disappears, is lost, falls on his face. Know, beloved, such holy moments of a clear sense of the greatness of God do not happen without the influence of Thrones. It is they who, as it were, join us to their mood, throw its sparkles into our hearts.

domination

God is called the Lord because he takes care of the world created by Him, provides for it, is its Supreme Owner. “He,” says blessed Theodoret, “is himself both a shipbuilder and a gardener who has grown matter. He created the substance, and built the ship, and constantly controls its helm. “From the shepherd,” teaches St. Ephraim the Syrian, - the herd depends, and everything that grows on the earth depends on God. In the will of the farmer - the separation of wheat from the thorns, in the will of God - the prudence of those living on earth in their mutual unity and unanimity. It is in the will of the king to arrange regiments of soldiers, in the will of God - a certain charter for everything. For the Seraphim, God is flaming Love; for the Cherubim - take out the luminous Wisdom; for Thrones God is the King of Glory; for Dominions, God is the Lord-Provider. Predominantly before all other ranks of the Dominion, they contemplate God precisely as a Provider, sing of His care for the world: they see “and in the sea the way, and in the waves of His strong path” (Wisdom 14: 3), they look with fear how “He will change times and years, he sets up kings and sets them down” (Dan. 2:21). Full of sacred delight and compunction, the Lord enters into the many different cares of God: he puts on the curtains of the village, “as Solomon in all his glory is clothed, as if he is one from these” (Matt. 6:29), as He dresses “the sky clouds, prepares the earth for rain vegetates grass and grain on the mountains for the service of man: he gives their food to the cattle, and to the chicks of the crows that call on him ”(Ps. 146: 7-9). Domination must be prayerfully invoked to help anyone who wants to free himself from any passion, wants to dominate it, to get behind some bad habit, but cannot do this because of weakness of will.

Forces

Predominantly before all other ranks, this angelic rank contemplates God as creating many powers or miracles. For the Forces, God is the Miracle Worker. “You are the God who works miracles” (Ps. 76:15) - this is what constitutes the subject of their constant praise and glorification. Forces delve into how "wherever God wills, the order of nature is overcome." Oh, how enthusiastic, how solemn, how wondrous must these songs be! If we, clothed in flesh and blood, when we are witnesses of some obvious miracle of God, for example, the sight of the blind, the restoration of the hopelessly ill, come into indescribable delight and trembling, we are amazed, moved, then what can we say about the Forces when they are given to see miracles that our minds cannot even imagine. Moreover, they can delve into the very depths of these miracles, their highest goal is revealed to them.

Authorities

The angels belonging to this rank contemplate and glorify God as the Almighty, "who has all power in heaven and on earth." A terrible God, “His vision dries up the abyss, and the prohibition melts the mountains, who walked, as if on dry land, on the splashing of the sea, and forbade the storms of the winds; who touches the mountains and smokes; calling on the water of the sea, and shedding it on the face of all the earth."
The angels of the sixth rank are the closest, constant witnesses of God's omnipotence, they are given the opportunity to feel it before others. From the constant contemplation of the Divine power, from the constant contact with it, these angels are imbued with this power in the same way that red-hot iron is imbued with fire, which is why they themselves become carriers of this power and are called: Powers. Beginnings

These angels are so called because God entrusted them with command over the elements of nature: over water, fire, wind, "over animals, plants and in general over all visible objects." “Creator and Builder of the world. Archangels

This rank, says St. Dionysius of learning". Archangels are heavenly teachers. What are they teaching? They teach people how to arrange their lives according to God, that is, according to the will of God.
Different paths of life are before man: there is the path of monasticism, the path of marriage, and there are various kinds of service. What to choose, what to decide, what to stop? This is where the Archangels come to the aid of man. To them the Lord reveals His will concerning man. The archangels know, therefore, what awaits a famous person on this or that path of life: what hardships, temptations, temptations; therefore, they deviate from one path, and direct a person to another, teach them to choose the right path, suitable for him.
Whoever has broken his life, hesitates, does not know which way to go, he must call on the help of the Archangels, so that they teach him how he should live: “Archangels of God, determined by God Himself to teach us, admonish, teach me which path to choose I’ll go and please my God!”

Angels

These are the closest to us. The angels continue what the archangels begin: the archangels teach a person to recognize the will of God, put him on the path of life indicated by God; Angels lead a person along this path, guide, protect the one who walks, so that he does not deviate to the side, they strengthen the exhausted, and lift the falling one.
Angels are so close to us that they surround us from everywhere, they look at us from everywhere, they watch our every step, and, according to St. John Chrysostom, "the whole air is filled with angels"; Angels, according to the same saint, "appear to the priest at the time of the terrible Sacrifice."

Guardian angel

From among the angels, the Lord, from the moment of our baptism, assigns to each of us another special angel, which is called the Guardian Angel. This Angel loves us so much as no one on earth can love. The Guardian Angel is our true friend, an invisible quiet interlocutor, a sweet comforter. He wishes only one thing for each of us - the salvation of the soul; to this he directs all his cares. And if he sees us also caring about salvation, he rejoices, but if he sees us being careless about his soul, he mourns.
Do you want to always be with an angel? Run away from sin, and the Angel will be with you. “Just as,” says Basil the Great, “smoke and stench drives away the bees, so the Guardian of our life, the Angel, is driven away by the mournful and stinking sin.” Therefore, be afraid to sin!
Is it possible to recognize the presence of the Guardian Angel when he is near us and when he moves away from us? You can, according to the inner mood of your soul. When your soul is light, your heart is light, quiet, peaceful, when your mind is occupied with contemplation of God, when you repent, you are touched, then, therefore, there is an Angel nearby. “When, according to the testimony of John of the Ladder, at some utterance of your prayer you feel inner delight or tenderness, then stop over it. For then the Guardian Angel prays with you.” When you have a storm in your soul, passions in your heart, your mind is haughty, then know that the Guardian Angel has departed from you, and instead of him the demon has approached you.
