Proximity sensor a5. How to disable the proximity sensor on Android? Using default settings

Every year, smartphones become more complex and constantly updated with new features. In particular, MIUI 8 gadgets are equipped with various sensors to help you work. For example, the light sensor (proximity) is responsible for the correct adjustment of the automatic brightness of the display and for turning it off during a telephone conversation. Sometimes in his work there are problems associated with incorrect calibration: for example, if the sensor did not turn off the display during calls, the user may accidentally press something wrong with his ear. There can be many reasons for incorrect calibration. If a simple reboot of the smartphone did not fix the problem, let's explore the reasons for this.

  1. Xiaomi Redmi 3 proximity sensor is disabled. It is quite simple to enable it (let's take the Xiaomi Redmi3s smartphone as an example): open the dialer, then hold down the menu and select the item in the list "Incoming calls". There you will see "Proximity sensor". It needs to be turned on. Due to the fact that Xiaomi has a huge variety of phone models and their firmware, it is impossible to indicate the exact location of this item. If this setting is missing, it might be worth looking elsewhere.
  2. Also, a very common cause of errors in the operation of the touch sensor on Mi Max or Redmi Note may be a running gadget lock function that does not allow it to turn on when the phone is in your pocket. Because of this, very often the Xiaomi 3S proximity sensor lags and is buggy. To disable it, you need to go to "Settings - Calls - Incoming calls", where you will see a slider that must be moved to turn off the feature.
  3. In addition, physical obstacles, such as protective glass or film, can be the cause of a poorly functioning sensor on Redmi Note. Check if there are special holes on the film for this sensor, and if not, change the protection or make these holes yourself. Most often, the sensor is located near the earpiece and the front camera. A similar problem is most often created by universal or simply low-quality glasses and films, and therefore we recommend that you carefully check before buying whether all the holes are available.

Xiaomi Redmi Proximity Sensor Calibration

What to do if the proximity sensor does not work on your Redmi Note 3 anyway? It is necessary to calibrate the sensor - this method is one of the most common. To do this, first check if the sensor works at all: in the call menu, enter the code *#*#6484#*#* (without pressing the call button). You will see the engineering menu (we tested this method on Xiaomi Redmi 4 Pro and Xiaomi Redmi 3 Pro, if it didn’t work out, read the article on how to get into the engineering menu) with five buttons. You need to click on the top right with the inscription Single Item Test. Next, find the inscription below Proximity Sensor and click on it, you will be taken to the testing menu. This should show "Near" or "Far" when you close the sensor with your finger. If the sensor does not respond, then it is broken, and if the test is successful, you can calibrate the Xiaomi Redmi 3s proximity sensor:

  • Turn off the device;
  • Press the Volume + button and then the Power button. After vibration, release the buttons;
  • You will see the Chinese menu. Click on the 中文 button at the bottom right of the Download 模式 button. The language will become English;
  • Press PCBA Test at the top and see the engineering menu. We go to Proximity sensor;
  • Lay the phone on a smooth horizontal surface after wiping the light sensor with a soft cloth;
  • Avoid bright light on the smartphone;
  • Press Calibration and wait while the sensor is being calibrated;
  • When finished, you will see the inscription Successfully- the sensor has been successfully calibrated.

To check the correct operation, cover the sensor with something opaque (for example, with a finger) - the one on the screen should change to zero. After completing the test, press the button Pass, after which we get into the engineering menu and press Finish-Power OFF. Then you need to turn on the smartphone again as usual and check the correct operation of the sensor: when making a call, when you bring the phone to your ear, you need the sensor to turn off the display.

If you want to enable the proximity sensor on android 6.0 (6.0.1), android 7.0, android 5.1, android 8 or android 5, then from the first lines, I can disappoint you a little.

Why? Because in smartphones such as for example samsung a5, xiaomi mi a1, zte, lenovo, nokia 3, sony z1, huawei, honor 4c and all the others with these versions, there is simply no such possibility.

It is included in them initially - by default, and there is not even a parameter to disable it, but you can do such a trick.

As far as I remember, you can turn it on and off on android 4.4.2 and below, although a lot depends on the smartphone manufacturer - they themselves decide which functions to enable and which to remove.

To check for this, you need to open the phone settings menu (phone icon) and go to the "Calls" tab

In some settings, the parameter is slightly different.

If you do not have such a parameter, then the only thing I can recommend to you is this application, which you can download right here - at the end of this post.

Program enable proximity sensor on android

If there was no option to enable the proximity sensor on your phone, then most likely it simply does not work for you.

The application I want to share with you is called Smart Screen On/Off Auto. How to use it. Download link at the end of this page, before the comments).

After installation, look at the position of the slider. If as below in the figure, then you need to move the slider to the right, making it inactive.

It should be like the picture below.

How else can you turn on the proximity sensor on android

As I wrote above, most likely your proximity sensor does not work - unfortunately, this happens.

For such cases, I already have a written guide on what to do if the proximity sensor in the smartphone does not work.

Of course, if the damage is mechanical, which also occurs, then there is nothing else left for you to replace.

Note! You can replace it yourself if you buy it with a cable. On YouTube, there are instructions on how to change, but if you have not encountered jewelry work in electronics, then it is better to entrust this matter to specialists. Good luck.

The Android operating system contains many useful features, but some of them may not be needed, in particular the proximity sensor. This is a special sensor that is installed on the front side of the device, and when an approaching object is detected, it performs some action, in particular:

  1. Turn off the backlight of the phone when bringing the smartphone to your ear;
  2. Automatic call reception when the motion sensor is triggered;
  3. Automatic increase in volume when the phone is directly in your pocket.

In some cases, it does not work correctly, so users prefer to turn it off for the convenience of using a mobile phone. There are several ways to disable the sensor: using default settings, third-party software, and using

Using default settings

A simple and extremely affordable way to disable the proximity sensor on Android is to use the standard settings. In each model, this function can be located in different places. However, the general "formula" for turning off the sensor consists of the following steps:

  1. Go to the "Settings" section of your android smartphone.
  2. Select the sub-item "Calls";
  3. Find the item "Proximity sensor", and then uncheck it.

In some devices, this item is called differently, in particular, "turn off the screen during a call." After that, you can make a call and check that everything is disabled.

Using third party software

There are times when such manipulations do not give any effect and the proximity sensor still works as before. No need to be upset, because on the Internet you will find several applications that allow you to disable this sensor bypassing the standard android settings.

One such application is Smart Screen Off. It provides ample opportunities for configuring various sensors and phone buttons. The functionality of this program also includes disabling the proximity sensor. In the program interface, you need to find the corresponding item, respectively, disable the proximity sensor.

After that, when you call and bring the device to the auricle, the sensor will not work, i.e., it will not perform any actions. You can download the application on Google Play, and then:

  1. Enter the name in the search bar;
  2. Go to the program page;
  3. Click install.

Engineering menu and service codes - the solution to any problems

Most modern mobile operating systems, including Android, have a so-called engineering menu. It is an advanced smartphone settings with which you can adjust almost any component of the phone, including the proximity sensor if it does not work properly. Before using this menu, be sure to read all the information you can find on your model. The engineering menu is used only by developers or advanced users. Setting the wrong settings can lead to extremely unfavorable consequences. To enter the engineering menu, you must:

  1. Turn on dialing on your phone.
  2. On the keyboard, type the following combination of characters - * # * # 3646633 # * # * (depending on the manufacturer, there may be other combinations).
  3. If after that the engineering menu does not appear, press the call button.

There is an easier way - enter the service code. This is a special combination of symbols and numbers, thanks to which you can perform a certain action. If the sensor does not work correctly, you should find the code for your particular phone model by which the shutdown will be performed. Be sure to check out several online sources of information as there are engineering codes that produce .

Other solutions to the problem

Incorrect operation of the sensor can be associated with errors in the Android OS. Try updating and then upgrade to the new version. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Go to phone settings.
  2. Select "About phone".
  3. Click on System Update.

Sensors that detect the approach of an object without material contact are integrated into many gadgets of today's electronics. The most primitive example is a faucet of public places - in a toilet or dining room, triggered by the approach of an object. Next - a dryer, etc.

Proximity controller - why is it needed and what role does it play?

Everything is clear with everyday life, but what function does such a controller have in gadgets - phones and tablets? Almost the same function as in electric dryers and water taps. This technology is used on the touch panels of ATMs and other mass service products. Thanks to this, electricity is saved, there is no need for physical activation of some device functions, thereby increasing the service life of the product.

In smartphones, such a sensor turns off or blocks the screen from approaching the head. This feature prevents unnecessary taps on the touch screen, such as touching a person's head. And, of course, saves battery life. Of course, it cannot distinguish objects from one another, it simply activates when an object approaches the display. This can be controlled by bringing any object to the place where the controller is embedded.

Problems arising when operating with proximity controllers in smartphones and other devices
For most users, it happens that their controller installed in the device does not function correctly. The screen does not turn off, does not automatically lock when close to the cheek, or vice versa, the display does not wake up from sleep mode, and your phone cannot be automatically unlocked after you end a phone call. To eliminate this flaw, you need to calibrate the sensor.

Calibration

To fix this problem, you need to download a specialized utility for working with the proximity sensor from the official resource on the Internet. In the latest versions of the Android system, the ability to configure the proximity sensor is provided by the manufacturer and is built into the standard settings as a separate menu. In Android version 4, you need to open the settings menu, find the "Screen" item and then go to the "ALS PS calibration" section (it may differ in different devices) located on the bottom line.
Then you need to put the device on a smooth and straight surface, present a piece of paper or an object of other origin to the sensor at a distance of 1-5 cm, hold it motionless in this position, and press the "Calibrate" key. If you close the surface of the sensor - and calibrate, then it will be turned off. But only until the first reboot.

To turn it off completely, you need to disassemble the device, which is not recommended without the appropriate skills and knowledge. It is better to contact a repair center or service, especially if your device is still under warranty or has a considerable cost.

How to disable completely

The fact is that a bunch of all sorts of phone models have been made and each with its own characteristics. There is no single answer. But, look at some options (enable and disable):

Another option:

Complete shutdown of the sensor is possible using service codes that are entered through a special combination on the device's keyboard. Phones of different models and manufacturers differ in combinations, so you need to find a combination that suits your phone.

The sensor is turned on in the same way, by introducing a combination to turn on. If the sensor cannot be calibrated, or even performed with its settings, then there is a possibility of its malfunction, which can only be eliminated by replacing this element.

Smartphones on the Android operating system equipped with proximity sensor, turn off the screen when you hold the smartphone to your ear during a call. In principle, this is a very useful feature that allows you not only to save battery power, but to prevent accidental clicks. But you won’t be able to answer the call and at the same time continue to correspond in the messenger or edit the text - the hand will approach the touch screen, the sensor will work and ... the display will simply turn off. In the event that the screen of your smartphone does not turn off during a conversation or, on the contrary, constantly strives to turn off, you can most likely assume that the same proximity sensor is to blame for these problems.

It has been observed that dust and debris in the speaker area of a smartphone are common culprits for a malfunctioning proximity sensor. The proximity sensor is located at the top of the phone, and if you hold the screen at a slight angle, you can see it and other sensors as well. They are located close to the speaker and look like small holes covered with screen glass. If foreign objects get there - motes, dust, the operation of the sensor is disrupted. Therefore, before turning off the proximity sensor, we advise you to clean your smartphone.

How to clean the smartphone speaker to restore the functionality of the proximity sensor:

  1. Turn off your phone and blow out the speaker with compressed air.
  2. Make sure your phone's speaker is free of debris or dust (if necessary, be very careful using a toothpick or other tool suitable for carefully removing small debris).
  3. Reboot your phone and check the functionality of the sensor.

How to disable the proximity sensor on Android?
