  • As soon as spring brings a new growth of bushes and berries, bears start feeding. They eat and eat. All through the spring and summer their feeding goes on. The bears build themselves up. They store food and fats that they will need in the fall when they start their long sleep.
  • As days grow shorter, and the temperature begins to fall, bears hunt for a sleeping place. It may be a shallow cave, or a deep crack between rocks. Some bears end up sleeping in hollow logs. Logs seem to be bears' favorite places. Bears seem to choose small spaces. They can keep warmer in a cave that's just large enough to hold them than in a larger cave. They often line their sleeping place with leaves and dried grass.
  • All through their winter naps, bears will not eat. Often they will sleep for 7 months, moving only now and then.

Task C6

4) monologue- comparison of two photos

(pictures).

7 points

Example task C6:

  • Study the two photographs. In a minute be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description (action, location)

  • say what the pictures have in common

  • say in what way the pictures are different

  • say which kind of music you'd prefer

  • explain why

  • Begin your statement with an introduction to the topic (introduction). I would like to describe & compare these 2 pictures. Well, our life has changed dramatically in the recent years.

  • Pay attention to comparing photos, and not describing each of them separately ( Both pictures show…/In both pictures…/In the first picture I can see…)

  • You should note the common and distinctive features of the proposed photographs - 2 similarities, 2 differences (In picture 1, I can see… whereas/while picture 2 shows… One/Another similarity is that… What both pictures have in common is that… The main similarity /difference of these pictures is… Another important difference is (that)… In contrast, the second picture…)
  • Use colloquial clichés and useful phrases (In my opinion, In my view, In my mind, To my way of thinking, Personally, I'm of the opinion that, If you ask me, I'm of the belief that , The way I see it, As far as I concerned, From my perspective, The way I look at it, As far as I can see ).
  • Express your opinion and justify it, supporting it with examples if possible.

  • Do not be silent, filling possible pauses with expressions Well…/Let me think…/You know…

  • At the end, repeat your opinion again, preferably using different vocabulary.

I would like to describe & compare these 2 pictures. Well, our life has changed dramatically in the recent years. Nowadays people interfere in the wonderful world of nature more & more often. They destroy the natural habitat of animals by cutting down forests, building & farming. That's why the problem of keeping animals in zoos instead of letting them live in the wild is very acute. well, both pictures show an animal, the bear. I would like to start with the first picture that shows a big polar bear in the zoo. The bear is sitting on a stone with its paws up. It is not looking at people it seems that it is tired of so much attention. A lot of people have gathered near the open-air cage, taking pictures. As the people are wearing warm coats and caps, it is probably late autumn. The colors in this picture are gray and dark.

As for the second picture, it also shows a bear, but it is the brown bear. It is completely different from the first one as it shows the bear in the wild. In contrast to the first picture, the second one is full of bright colors: yellow flowers, green grass. It shows a summer day. The bear is busy, it is carrying a log. I like this picture more and not only because I like summer but also because I believe that keeping wild animals in the zoo is inhuman. Some people say that it is necessary for some educational purposes, to say nothing of entertainment.

All in all, both these pictures make me think of the wildlife. And I am sure that wild animals should live free in their natural habitat because they are part of nature.

Task 3. Description of the photo

Task 3. These are photos from your photo album. Choose one photo to describe to your friend

You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

  • where and when the photo was taken
  • what/who is in the photo
  • what is happening
  • why do you keep the photo in your album
  • why did you decide to show the picture to your friend

You have to talk continuously, starting with: “I’ve chosen photo number …”

Work program for teaching materials Enjoy English (basic level) for grades 10-11. Available for viewing and free download.

Methodological hint

Read the assignment carefully and familiarize yourself with the presented plan. You have 1 minute 30 seconds to prepare for this task. On its implementation (that is, the description of the photo) - 2 minutes. Choose one of the photographs offered for description. When choosing, be guided not by which photo you like, but by how familiar you are with the topic and vocabulary on it, and how much you can describe in it. The choice should not take more than three seconds.

Important! The proposed plan does not include an introduction and conclusion, but they must be present, as you are offered to make a coherent complete description of the photograph, which in itself implies the presence of an introductory and final part.

For the introduction and conclusion, as well as for the answers to the first, fourth and fifth questions, several templates can be prepared in advance, which can be easily and quickly modified depending on the photo. Thus, the bulk of the time (about a minute out of one and a half) allotted for preparation, you can spend on describing the photo itself, that is, who and what are in the photo (the second point of the plan) and what is happening on it (the third point of the plan) . A few tips:
1. It's always easier to talk about people you know, so imagine that your friends or relatives are in the photo, determine what family ties are between you, and give people names.
2. When describing the photograph itself, it will be advisable to divide it into parts and describe first what is in the background (in the background), then on the sides (on the left / right side), gradually moving towards the center or foreground (in the center of/in the foreground). Do not forget that if the photo was taken on the street, then you can always say a few words about the weather.
3. When describing the people in the photograph, one can say about their age and appearance, what they are wearing, what emotions they experience.
4. Next, we describe what is happening in the photo. To do this, we use the Present Continuous time. Sometimes there is practically no action in the photo for some reason. It should be mentioned, explaining the reason. It suffices to name three actions.

The description of the photograph as such (that is, the answer to the second and third points of the plan) should take up approximately half of the total time, the second half should include the introduction and conclusion and the answer to points 1, 4, and 5 of the plan.

Important! Remember that this is not a story about what was happening in your life or in the lives of your relatives/friends at the time the photo was taken, but a description of what is happening in the photo.

Approximate completion of task 1

I "ve chosen photo number 1. (Introduction) You know, taking photos is my hobby, and I always take a lot of photos wherever I go. I keep the best photos in my family album. (Question 1 of the plan) I took this photo last summer in the forest near our country house when we had a family reunion (Question 2 of the plan). In the photo you can see a group of children playing football (general information on the picture). and not windy. In the background you can see a forest with tall trees and bushes and in the foreground there is green grass. There are some children in the center of the picture - they are all my relatives. They are all quite young. The girl is 6. She is my oldest sister Olga. She is at the front of the group. And the youngest one is my nephew Nikolay who is just behind Olga. They are all light clothes-T-shirts wearing and shorts as it is very warm. They all look very happy and excited as they are playing together. They are running after a ball trying to kick it. And y ou can see that Nikolay is very concentrated as he is moving very fast to be the first to catch the ball. (Please note that the entire description is in present tenses - Present Simple (to describe static) and Present Continuous (to describe movement)! (Answer to question 4 of the plan) I keep this photo in my family album as it is very dear to me. It was actually a very memorable day when our big family got together and I could meet all my cousins and nephews and nieces and enjoy time together. (Answer to plan question 5) I decided to show it to you as I "m proud of my family and happy that we get together from time to time and I wanted to share my emotions with you. about this photo.

Task 4. Comparison of two photographs, identification of common and differences.

Task 4. Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • say which of the professions presented in the pictures you'd prefer
  • explain why

You will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

As you complete this task, keep the following in mind:

You have 1 minute 30 seconds to prepare for this task and 2 minutes to complete it.

As well as in the third task (photo description), when completing task 4, you must make an introduction and conclusion before you proceed directly to the answer according to the plan. The introduction consists of one or two sentences on the general topic disclosed in the photographs (the fourth point of the plan can suggest the topic) and one sentence telling what you will do now. If the topic is not formulated in any way, one last sentence is enough. In conclusion, summing up what has been said, you need to return to the topic again (one or two sentences).

Answering the first point of the plan, a very brief description of each photo will suffice. It is necessary to say for each picture what is happening and where. And you can add one sentence of a general nature about what is in the first and second photographs.

When we disclose the second and third points of the plan, we must find two similarities and two differences. And the similarities and differences should be common. Point number 4 of the plan can help not only with the introduction, but also with significant similarities and differences, because. they are also related to the main theme of the photographs.

When answering the fourth paragraph of the plan, it is enough to rearrange the word order of the phrase indicated in the plan I "d prefer the ...... (Profession) presented in the picture number ....... You cannot say I" d prefer the picture number. ... as it doesn't fit the job. You can’t say I "d prefer to be in the picture number ...., since this is incorrect in meaning - we cannot be in the picture. In the fifth paragraph of the plan, you need to justify your choice made before with 2-3 extended sentences (paragraph four).

Do not forget that task 4 is structurally close to the essay format, so you need to use linkers (allied words) when listing similarities and differences. For example, Firstly, /Secondly,..... Or To begin with, -Furthermore, (Moreover,....What is more....). In conclusion / To conclude .....-in conclusion.

Before listing common features, it is necessary to say that you will now talk about common features. For example, Both pictures have some features in common. Before moving on to the differences, this also needs to be mentioned. For example, however, there are some differences.

When compared, phrases or verbs expressing assumptions will sound good. For example, they could be designers. They must be in the office. They seem to be teenagers. They look like young employees. ......

Differences should not repeat common features. With an approximate layout of the entry time, the answer to the first and second points of the plan should not take more than one minute.

Approximate completion of task 4

(In modern society there is a great variety of different professions. People try to choose one according to their taste and abilities. And these two pictures show this. - this part of the introduction can be omitted) Now I "d like to compare and contrast these in the first picture there is a young teacher explaining something to the pupils in front of her. Both pictures have some similarities. Firstly, the most striking common feature is that both pictures show people engaged in doing jobs. Secondly, people are interested in what they are doing. They look quite concentrated on their work. Nevertheless, both photos have some differences. To begin with, in the first picture we can see the profession which presupposes working with people - the teacher is teaching pupils on her own, other people are not included in the process. in the second picture there is a profession which involves doing the job with co-workers. in the first picture the classroom is practically empty except for a blackboard and some desks while the second picture depicts an office with a lot of furniture, models and whiteboards. I would prefer the profession presented in picture number one as I think it is a very challenging but rewarding job. Besides I love working with people, especially children and I have always been good at teaching my friends and my younger sister's friends some things. (In conclusion, choosing the right profession which will suit you in all aspects is a very hard task and we must think a lot and ask for advice before we make the correct choice. - in case of time constraints, this sentence can be omitted) That is all I wanted to tell you.

Introductory words are taken into account when scoring. In C5 they should be 4 and not necessarily intricate, while in C6 - 5-6

conclusion

English tutor m Otradnoye analyzes in detail task C5 of the oral part of the new demo version of the exam in English 2017. With us, you will pass the speaking of the exam well.

1 General remarks

If you ask yourself who, in the first place, the USE in English is designed for in its current form, the answer is obvious: a very average student. This follows from the rigidity of the framework, from the formality of the criteria for evaluating the answer, and from many other signs.

What should a weak student do in such a situation? Standardize as much as possible, that is, have most of the answer ready, and almost never change it.

The problem is that a strong student needs to do the same. To paraphrase a well-known saying about the Russian parliament, we can say that the classroom for passing the exam in English is not a place to demonstrate your knowledge of the English language. You must demonstrate understanding of the criteria and compliance with them.

2 Photo selection

The choice of photography, as we all understand, is a critical moment that determines the success rate of 60-70%. Not only do you have to quickly decide what is easier to describe, but the main points of your description must come together with the choice.

As an example, consider the latest demo version of the USE 2017.

My selection is usually based on the following criteria.

2.1 Be sure to take photos with people, but it is desirable that there be 1-2 of them, and not many.

By this criterion, I would immediately exclude photo 2, and would choose from 1 and 3.

2.2 A person or two or three people must do something simple, not allowing double and complex interpretation.

Photo 1 is suitable - running. In second place in this sense is photo 2 - they are watching a movie. But it’s hard to explain right away why there’s no one else in the hall. Photo 3 also satisfies this criterion - the guy works as a waiter. But it's hard to explain exactly where.

Photo 3 is very attractive, but I do not fully understand what is happening there. Whether it is volunteers - and not everyone knows this word, although it is simple. If this is a school practice, then it is not entirely clear what kind of place and what kind of event.

2.3 The photo should be easy to describe.

In this sense, as a rule, nature is lighter than the interior.

In both cases, colors can always be described. But in the case of nature, the set of words is much simpler - trees, mountain, sea, ocean, river, lake, road, house(s) ... Plus, you can always say something about the weather.

My choice would be photo 1 - the most banal of all and the easiest to describe. I definitely will not be at a loss in describing a forest or a park, a summer day, etc.

Our goal is to get 3 points, that is, the maximum, according to the criterion "Solution of a communicative problem." We read the description of what 3 points are given for:

The communicative task was completed in full: the content fully, accurately and extensively reflects all the aspects indicated in the task (12-15 phrases)

We translate from the linguo-clerk into Russian:

  1. Say one to three sentences for each item in the plan.
  2. Say exactly in the order in which these items follow in the plan.
  3. Say 12-15 sentences.

Here is our plan, it is always under the photo in the task:

You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12-15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

Where and when the photo was taken

What/who is in the photo

What is happening

Why do you keep the photo in your album

Why did you decide to show the picture to your friend

You have to talk continuously, starting with: "I"ve chosen photo number ..."

3 Case study

So, we took photo 1. (In brackets after each sentence - the counter of the number of proposals with comments)

Picture 1

I've chosen picture number 1(0 - this phrase is not taken into account by the expert when calculating the total number of phrases) [In square brackets - advanced option]

As you know, I "m a keen photographer, and I take my camera with me wherever I go.(1 - Opening phrase)

I took this photo last summer during my school holidays(2 - where and when the photo was taken)

This photo was taken in the park next to my cousin's house. (3- where and when the photo was taken)

That's all I wanted to tell you.(16 - obligatory final phrase)

Our task is completed - for such an answer we will get the maximum.

4 Criteria for evaluation by experts

Be sure to look at the end of the demo and read the evaluation criteria. We strive for the maximum, so I give only those for which the maximum number of points is put.

4.1 Solving the communicative problem

The text of the criterion is given above. The main thing is that we reflected all the points, and said the required 15 phrases. We get 3 points, that is, the maximum.

4.2 Organization of the utterance.

This is the second main criterion.

The statement is logical and has a complete character; there are introductory and concluding phrases corresponding to the theme. The means of logical connection are used correctly.

The first phrase actually repeats the next two. If the means of logical connection are used correctly, then in order for the statement to be logical, the arguments themselves must be taken from the work of Eugène Ionesco, one of the founders of absurdism.

Let us single out the main thing in this criterion, simultaneously translating from the linguo-clerical:

  1. There must be an explicit opening and closing phrase
  2. We must not break the order of the points: first where and when, and only then who. And then strictly according to plan. Since the plan says cast iron, it means that there will be cast iron.
  3. We certainly have means of logical connection. This is a double use of because. Even weak learners do not make mistakes in using because. In addition, we have a trump card in the form of as you know in the introduction phrase. Should I use something else? Definitely - no. Yes, and in terms of time, our performance is at 1’25 "", if not back to back.

With all their desire, they will not be able to find fault. But I assure you, the experts have little desire to quibble. The most reasonable thing is to consider them neutral. They will not drown, but they will not pull anyone either.

But there is no need to pull us, we pulled ourselves out - 2 points, that is, the maximum.

4.3 Language design of the statement

The used vocabulary, grammatical structures, phonetic formulation of the statement correspond to the task (no more than two non-rough lexico-grammatical errors AND / OR no more than two non-rough phonetic errors are allowed).

The only thing I did not understand from the already quite extensive communication with experts is how they use AND / OR. Unfortunately, they do it simply - they treat it at the maximum level of rigor, always choosing OR. Thus, we can only make a mistake twice.

We must try not to make mistakes, but in such a way that it does not put pressure psychologically, so that, God forbid, we do not get squeezed. And play it safe: if you're not 100% sure of a word or grammatical structure, don't use it.

There are no grammatical errors in our text, it remains to say it correctly. It is not too complicated, I would even say simple, and it is generally difficult to make a mistake in it. So - 2 points and 7 points in the end, that is, the maximum.

5 How to prepare

The principle is simple - as soon as you have difficulty saying it from a sheet, take paper and write.

The algorithm of actions does not change whether you say or write:

1 Quick selection of a photo according to the criteria of point 2

As a result of the choice, you should have a short chain of main points in your head, such as: cousin - good at sports - running / training in the park - next to her house

2 Maximum standard

- introductory and final phrase, in general, everything that is possible should be standard. At the same time, you should not chatter and give the expert the impression that you know your performance by heart. Even if suddenly you know everything by heart, give the impression that this is not so.

Let's see how much standard is in our answer:

I've chosen picture number…
As you know, I "m a keen photographer, and I take my camera with me wherever I go. I took this photo last summer during my school holidays
The day is beautiful, and the picture is full of sunlight.
I keep this photo in my album because it brings good memories. I like my (….) very much, and we are good friends. I miss her and when I look at this photo I remember our time together
I decided to show this picture to you because I've always wanted you to meet (…..) Next summer I'm going to (…..) again.
Why don't you join me?
That's all I wanted to tell you.

There are 112 words in this passage. Our full text has 177 words if we omit everything in square brackets, and 193 if we use everything in square brackets.

Thus, in our text 112/177 = 63% of the standard, that is, learned by heart in advance, in a simple version. In the advanced version, we have 112/193=58% of the standard.

The ratio 193/177=1.09 shows the degree of freedom of your creativity in this task. ten%.

6 Conclusion

I wanted to show two things - that task C3 leaves you with very little freedom, and that you should not be afraid of it.

Any average student can get the maximum, or near the maximum, if he strictly follows my recommendations.

Be creative - change my advice specifically for yourself.

While training, record yourself on your smartphone voice recorder and do not forget about the noise problem, which I wrote about in the article How to prepare for the oral part of the Unified State Examination in English 2017.

In the following articles of the cycle, I will consider photos that are inconvenient for describing:

Speaking Unified State Examination 2017 - (С5 -44) - uncomfortable photos II

Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos(action, location)
  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • say which kind of the activities presented in the pictures you"d prefer
  • explain why

You will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12-15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

1. I have two pictures and I want to describe and compare them.

2. In the first picture I can see a girl who is running in the forest. There are many green trees in the background and the weather is fine and sunny. The girl is wearing light clothes and she is alone. In the second picture I can see a gym with some treadmills and there are three girls who are running on the treadmills.

3. These two pictures have some common features. Firstly, in both pictures you can see girls. Secondly, they are wearing some sports clothes and they are running.

4. However, these two pictures have some differences. The most important difference is the location of the pictures: in the first picture the girl is running outside and she is alone, while in the second picture there are three girls and they are running in the gym. What's more, the girl from the second picture is running on the path, while the girls from the second picture are using some special running equipment.

5. I'd prefer to go running in the forest in the open air just like the girl from the first picture. And I have some reasons for my choice. Firstly, I think that it is more pleasant for me to go running in the open air. Secondly, I think the atmosphere is the first picture is more relaxing and I am fond of doing sports activities outside.

6. All in all, running is a very good way to keep fit and you can go running in many places. (All in all, tastes are different and people can choose whatever they want).
