Specialization: Capital construction works (laying the foundation, erecting walls, constructing the roof, etc.). Internal construction works (laying of internal communications, rough and fine finishing). Hobbies: mobile communication, high technologies, computer equipment, programming.

Starting repairs in a plumbing room, many pay attention only to utilities and wall decoration, missing such an important element as the ceiling in the bathroom.

So, for example, it happened with one of my acquaintances, a police colonel from the local district department. We discussed with him all possible options for arranging plumbing engineering systems, and the question of how to finish the ceiling in the bathroom arose after I finished the wall cladding.

It is also good that the installation of the ceiling can be done after finishing the walls (although it all depends on the type of material used and this statement is not always true). Therefore, we urgently sat down with him to discuss possible options. I suggested one or another design, indicating the strengths and weaknesses of each solution, and he decided whether this option is suitable for him personally.

If you are just going to or are already doing repairs with your own hands, then sooner or later you will also encounter a similar problem. So that you know in advance how to make a bathroom ceiling, I will describe the most popular designs that I have ever installed.

Basic requirements for ceilings in the bathroom

I want to note right away that the bathroom is a room with a special microclimate, the hallmarks of which are high humidity and significant temperature fluctuations. Therefore, the ceiling finish you choose in the bathroom must meet certain requirements.

I will list those that I personally (and, by the way, my interlocutor - the colonel) consider the most important:

  1. High hydrophobic properties. The selected material must be waterproof, not destroyed and not change its appearance during operation in humid air.

In addition, there is always the danger of direct contact with water, when the jet of liquid from the shower will be accidentally (or on purpose, because everyone will once have children) directed upwards. Therefore, the material must withstand this.

And it is also desirable, at least, I highly recommend, to provide for the possibility of water from the lower floor. Neighbors are different and nice people live not from above (you can check this with the neighbors below).

  1. Ease of care. This is especially true if the height of the ceiling above floor level requires the use of a ladder to clean it. I have three-meter ceilings in my apartment, and so, at first I didn’t even know how to change the light bulb in a spotlight, since no improvised means allowed me to get upstairs.

So, your wife will not thank you if she has to pretend to be an aerial gymnast several times a month, wiping dust or traces of water from the surface of a decorative material that you have thoughtlessly chosen.

For the same reason, I do not recommend using chandeliers in the bathroom. Firstly, they are very poorly used in a humid environment (not designed for this), and secondly, they have so many small parts that you will grow old before putting it in order after a month of use. I know, tested it on my own experience in my youth.

  1. High aesthetic qualities. Naturally, no matter how high the technical characteristics and performance properties are, you need to pay attention to the appearance of the material. Especially if your other half loves to take a bath (after all, in this case, the ceiling just falls into view).

Ways to decorate the ceiling in the bathroom

Now I will tell you how to finish the ceiling in the bathroom. As I already said, the list may not be exhaustive, since I only mention those options that I happened to have a hand in arranging.

All of them are on the diagram, which I bring to your attention.

Method 1 - Puttying and painting

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about how to make a ceiling in a plumbing room is a simple surface putty and subsequent painting. These operations are easy to do with your own hands, and the cost of materials will be small.

However, before you decide on this option, I want to mention a few important points:

  1. This method of finishing will be profitable and not very laborious only if the interfloor overlap is even, that is, you do not have to level large height differences and surface curvature. Otherwise, in order to keep a thick layer of putty or plaster on a horizontal surface, you will have to resort to additional tricks, which I would not recommend.
  2. Use paints and do not listen to the advice of grandmothers who recommend covering the surface with chalk. After all, you don’t want to think every year (or even more often) how to whitewash the ceiling, located 3 meters above the floor level (well, this is in my case).

I will not highlight separately the advantages and disadvantages of such a solution. The fact is that in the course of a conversation with the colonel, it turned out that some characteristics that I consider minuses, he perceives as pluses, and vice versa.

Therefore, I will only list the technical characteristics and performance properties, and you yourself decide whether they are good or not:

  1. Such a ceiling cannot be called an exquisite design solution, but you can make it unique by using several different colors for painting. If a higher power has endowed you with talent, you can generally turn this surface into a work of art with the help of paint, worthy of recognition by the great Michelangelo. Indeed, in fact, the majestic temples in the Vatican are simply painted.

  1. The service life of plastered and painted is about 10 years. Naturally, if another higher power does not intervene, the representatives of which are the neighbors from above.

I mean, if water leaks from the top floor, the decorative painting can deteriorate. Although it is easy to correct the defect. You just need to have paint, a brush and a stepladder, without which it will be difficult to reach the surface.

  1. The ceiling is easy to care for, although the surface will still darken over time. The fact is that the paint absorbs dirt particles that cannot be washed with household detergents.

But many readers have already guessed that this question is also easy to read. For those who have not yet understood, I advise you to re-read the previous paragraph.

  1. It is impossible to build engineering communications into such a ceiling. In particular, we are talking about the ventilation system and electric lighting. Therefore, you will have to be content with a pendant or wall lamp and a fan built into a niche (without air channels).

Just because of the last point, I don’t like the method described in this section. Therefore, without delay, I will move on to a presentation of other finishes.

Method 2 - Plastic panels

This finishing material is made from polyvinyl chloride - a special plastic, the technical characteristics of which make it the best fit for use in the bathroom.

To make it easier for you to decide on the choice of this method, I will point out the main advantages and disadvantages of the material. They are collected in a table for ease of perception.

pros Minuses
Plastic panels are strong enough and well tolerate external mechanical stress. Even if you accidentally touch the surface with some object, this will not damage the polymer in any way. Although, I once opened champagne in the bathroom (don't ask for details), so the cork left a dent in the ceiling. This method of finishing requires the use of a metal or wooden frame. Whatever the processing of parts, over time they become unusable, which leads to the need to dismantle and replace the entire structure. To increase the life of the ceiling, I advise you to take care of effective ventilation of the bathroom.
Plastic perfectly tolerates not only moist air, but also direct contact with liquid. At the same time, neither its appearance nor operational properties suffer in any way. The panels, no matter how tightly they are installed, have seams under which dirt clogs over time. It is easy to clean with a cloth. But sometimes, especially because of the high humidity, mold appears inside, which can only be removed with antiseptics.
Products are easy and simple to install with your own hands. You just need to decide how to install a metal profile, and every man can sheathe it with plastic. It is said that the polymer has a bad effect on human health, releasing harmful chemical compounds into the air. It may have been so before, but modern building materials are safe, as evidenced by quality certificates and other similar documents.
The surface is very easy to care for. The polymer is easily cleaned with common household detergents. I have used a special long-handled window mop several times. And I didn't have to climb to the top.
The ceiling of plastic panels allows you to hide any number of utilities. I had not only electrical wires and lamps laid under it, but also air ducts with fans.

Personally, I prefer to use plastic ceilings paired with a similar one. In this case, the finishing work is carried out more efficiently, and the design of the room looks more organic.

But if you are an esthete and a refined nature, I will tell you about a more aesthetic design option for a false ceiling - slats.

Method 3 - Aluminum rails

This type of ceiling is called rack. As you already understood, it got its name from narrow long parts that are mounted on the crate. I have only worked with aluminum slats, although other types of metal and plastic are commercially available.

I have always chosen aluminum due to its exceptional performance properties. This metal is not subject to corrosion, it is not adversely affected by water. And the details themselves have a very attractive appearance without any additional decorative trim.

Although if you want variety, modern manufacturers can give you it. In stores you can find the following options:

  • chrome parts;
  • gilded panels;
  • one-color products;
  • slatted ceilings with a pattern.

The details have a certain flexibility, so you can make curved designs that diversify the design of the bathroom.

As for the installation, then there is nothing to say. Everything you need is included in the kit, so if you have ever assembled a children's designer, there will be no particular problems here. You just need to read the instructions and get to work.

I will also mention the disadvantages. Personally, I made two points:

  1. If you buy slats that need to be installed tightly together, dirt can clog between them in the seams. Naturally, it can be removed by simple cleaning.
  2. The use of a slatted ceiling requires a special interior style. And not all bathroom shelves are suitable for this solution. We need to plan ahead, which was not done in my case with the colonel.

One more moment. The suspended rack structure takes some of the height of the walls. On the one hand, this is good, so you can hide engineering communications. But on the other hand, if your walls are not three meters high, you will have to put up with a ceiling hanging over your head, which not everyone likes.

To get rid of this drawback, I recommend installing glossy slats with a reflective surface that visually enlarges the space.

Since we are talking about suspended structures, I’ll talk about drywall next. The uniqueness of this option is that it can be decorated with different decorative materials.

Method 4 - Drywall

As in the case of plastic panels, drywall sheets are attached to a pre-designed crate. It can be made of galvanized profile or wood. I do not recommend using the last option, since the wood will quickly become unusable due to high humidity (or you will have to think about how to protect it with special impregnations).

The frame is sheathed with plasterboard sheets. I will immediately mention that you need to choose a moisture-resistant material that does not collapse under the influence of water vapor and is additionally treated with antiseptics. The latter prevent the development of mold, fungi and other harmful microorganisms.

Visually moisture resistant drywall differs in color. The cardboard in this material is painted green and the GKLV marking is applied to its surface.

I'll tell you more about the pros and cons of the material.

Advantages Flaws
With the help of GKL it is easy to make a unique and inimitable ceiling in the bathroom. I often designed multi-level structures with any curvature. The cost of implementing such a solution is quite high. Moreover, you will have to buy materials and pay an experienced master who is able to create the masterpiece you have drawn.
Any reasonable amount of utilities can be hidden under the crate. The lamps themselves and the suction ventilation holes look organically on the ceiling surface without spoiling the design of the bathroom. Drywall requires additional decorative finishing. To do this, you will need putty, and a primer, and paint. Not to mention the time you spend doing the work.
This design is able to correct any curvature and defects in the interfloor overlap. The paintwork of the ceiling will have to be updated from time to time, as it quickly fades from operation in a room with high humidity.
The plasterboard ceiling has a long service life.

If the slats are expensive for you, but you don’t want to mess around with drywall, I suggest another suspended structure. This time, decorative ceiling tiles will be hung. It is about her that will be discussed further.

Method 5 - Hanging Tiles

Here, which, I think, is no longer surprising for you, a special suspended structure is also used, similar to the one that has to be designed for a plasterboard ceiling. However, finished cells or cassettes are hung on it.

When compared with GCR, this material does not require decorative finishing, and, therefore, priming, painting, and so on. For me personally, this is just a huge plus.

By the way, tiles can be made of different materials:

  • organic glass;
  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • mineral plates.

I mounted plates with built-in lighting once. It turned out to be just a breathtaking bathroom that looked like a fairy-tale cave or a compartment of a spaceship (whoever works like a fantasy).

The disadvantages of the described solution include the fact that cassettes or cells do not always fit into the design of the bathroom or your home as a whole. Often such a ceiling is placed in office or commercial buildings, so you may have a similar association at home, which is not good for me personally.

On the other hand, if you decorate a house in a high-tech style, then the metal tiles on the ceiling will fit in perfectly.

Method 6 - Mirrors

I have already talked a lot about reflective materials on the ceiling. And now I'll tell you about the best of these solutions - mirrors. If you decide to use them in a plumbing room, it will turn out just gorgeous. Although a lot of money will have to be spent.

So, mirrors weigh a lot, therefore they can be installed on a reinforced frame made of a metal profile. Mirror plates are attached to the crate with screws, under which you need to drill holes (and, believe me, this is far from being as simple as it seems).

You can, of course, cheat and put a "mirror-type" ceiling. These are special panels that have a surface that reflects light well. They are mounted on their own suspension system, and this can be done quickly and easily.

An example of such a solution is the products of the Armstrong company, located in St. Petersburg. But I think that in any city there are proposals for such systems. I will immediately warn you that the frame of inexpensive systems can be subject to corrosion, so you need to organize effective ventilation.

The use of mirrored ceilings also has several disadvantages, which I did not fail to mention in a conversation with the colonel:

  1. Such a ceiling is a source of too intense shine, which you may not like. Especially if it is located too low or you have to stay in the bathroom for a long time.
  2. The mirror surface, so that it looks spectacular, will have to be washed frequently. And if with a vertical ordinary mirror this process is quite simple, then very great difficulties can arise with the ceiling. Therefore, you need to coordinate such a project with your other half in advance.

Method 7 - Tension

I left this option for last, since my friend, a police officer, chose it. And I completely agree with him, because such a design has many advantages:

  • perfectly tolerates exposure to humid air, without changing its appearance and technical characteristics;
  • does not require additional decorative finishing after installation;
  • the stretch fabric is able to hide any number of utilities laid under the ceiling;
  • it is well cleaned and washed using ordinary household detergents;
  • has many design options (it can be plain, with a pattern, with three-dimensional photo printing, matte, glossy, textured, and so on).

Another important plus is the ability to withstand a large amount of water leaked from the top floor. If such a nuisance happened to you, all the liquid will linger on the ceiling. After the experts will merge it, and the decorative material will restore its size.

I personally can name only two disadvantages that prevent the choice of this option:

  1. You are unlikely to be able to install the ceiling yourself. If only because it requires special equipment and materials.
  2. The canvas can be easily perforated by any object. This will not only worsen its appearance, but also make it impossible to contain spilled water.

I will point out one more feature. If you buy a white ceiling and put spotlights in it, be prepared for the fact that the polymer sheet may turn yellow in this area due to the high temperature. To avoid this, install LED lamps.

As I mentioned, my client and interlocutor made his choice. For you, I have prepared some tips that may help you in the difficult process of deciding which ceiling to use in the bathroom:

  1. You need to choose an option that would be combined with the design of the bathroom and the home as a whole. The best option is white. You can make such a ceiling stretch, plasterboard or tiles. In this case, the problem of lighting is easily solved (you need to put spotlights).

  1. Textured ceilings help to visually increase or decrease the dimensions of the plumbing room. In this case, I advise modular or slatted ceilings. The texture of individual elements is clearly visible on them.

  1. If you are lucky enough to be the owner of a spacious bathroom, you can aim at a multi-level ceiling. It is made, as you already know, from drywall. Particularly impressive are solutions where geometric shapes on the ceiling are combined with the appearance of plumbing fixtures.

  1. In the case when the aesthetic component is not a priority for you, but practicality comes to the fore, install a ceiling made of plastic panels. For this purpose it is ideal.

Of course, tension is even better, but you will have to pay extra for the installers to work. So decide for yourself.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are a huge number of ways to decorate. Using one or another option, you can easily decorate the ceiling in the bathroom so that it matches your taste 100%.

If you don't mind, tell us about your results in the comments. And for those who want to study the options I have proposed in more detail, I can suggest that you familiarize yourself with the video in this article.

Repair has always been and remains a real test, first of all, patience, imagination, ingenuity and a thoughtful attitude to problems. Take, for example, the bathroom. This is not only a place for taking water procedures, decorating a bathroom in the first place is a way to amaze friends and guests with fiction and creativity. The task is not easy, especially since in life you need to be able to combine beauty, practicality and your own preferences. Therefore, to the question of which ceiling is better to make in the bathroom, each owner has his own answer.

Bathroom ceiling options

The optimal solution, as you know, is at the junction of different options, you have to sacrifice something in order to get the main result for which the whole bathroom renovation was started. All options can be conditionally divided into two groups - beauty and practicality, there is no third. Therefore, before you make the ceiling in the bathroom, you will need to determine what should be more in the decoration of the bathroom ceiling - showiness or efficiency:

  • Beauty is a mirror or stretch ceiling in the bathroom, as in the photo, finishing with expensive types of wood or decorative panels with mosaics or graphics. When choosing this kind of ceiling finish in the bathroom, the main goal is the effect produced and positive emotions, and then moisture resistance and durability;
  • Practicality - plastic panels, slatted set or plasterboard ceiling in the bathroom. All materials are chosen to provide a neat and pleasing appearance while avoiding the negative effects that inevitably appear in a humid and hot bathroom environment.

The only thing that adherents of a beautiful style are unanimous with fans of a practical approach is that you need to make a false ceiling in the bathroom. Just whitewashing or painting the ceiling in the bathroom will be impractical and ugly, especially if the floor slabs have made the surface not very smooth and even for ten years after the end of the shrinkage processes.

It is worth remembering that any stretch or suspended ceilings "steal" an extra 10-20 cm of height and useful space of the room, so the choice of finishing method largely depends on the size of the bathroom.

Everything has already been tried before you. Of the more than three dozen different decorative materials, only a few are used in practice. The reason is simple - the bathroom is considered the most difficult object for repair and decoration, moisture and high temperature, condensate and detergents can quickly destroy unstable materials.

Therefore, the list of options for finishing the ceiling in the bathroom is limited to the following items:

  • Finishing with plastic panels or clapboard;
  • Arrangement of a false ceiling in the bathroom from plasterboard sheets;
  • Use of ceiling panels in the bathroom;
  • Prefabricated construction of wooden slats or slabs;
  • Stretch ceiling in the bathroom.

The main problem when finishing is to ensure reliable waterproofing of the ceiling in the bathroom. Otherwise, water condensate and water vapor will cause the fungus to spread quickly and imperceptibly to the human eye behind the suspended ceiling in the bathroom, after which it will be impossible to do anything, the entire structure will have to be dismantled, and the walls treated with disinfectants.

In addition, moisture can affect the elements of the cladding. For example, if you plan to make a wooden ceiling in the bathroom, then before installing it, you will need to properly plan and calculate ventilation, since wood does not like either excess moisture or regular waterlogging-drying cycles. In this mode, the material will quickly warp, the fibers will swell, and it will be impossible to restore the cladding in any other way than dismantling the slatted ceiling in the bathroom.

What decor options are not suitable for finishing the bathroom ceiling

There is a certain temptation to simplify the cladding problem and make repairs using simpler materials. For example, plaster the ceiling in the bathroom, make a perfectly flat surface and paint it with ordinary water-based paint.

The method is simple, but rather laborious, since in this case you will need to do the following:

  • Fix the supporting frame or welded steel mesh, ordinary plaster will not work, as they sag a lot. To hold the reinforcement on the bathroom ceiling, you will need to make a field of dowels, to which the mesh fabric is tied;
  • Clean the ceiling concrete slab as much as possible from whitewash, paint, dust, everything that builders are trying to make the bathroom ceiling more attractive with;
  • Plaster the surface with at least three layers of plaster mass. It is best to make a leveling layer of polymer-lime plaster, such material is well leveled and quickly sets.

After sanding the ceiling in the bathroom, it is necessary to impregnate with antifungal compounds if disinfectant chemicals are not part of the plaster mass. Only after that you can paint or apply a decorative mass.

The main problem is that a similar finish in the bathroom will stand until the first flow of water from the top floor. To make, as in the case of suspended ceilings, cosmetic restoration will not succeed, you will have to remove everything, remove it and do it in a new way.

The second method, even more popular due to its availability and simplicity, is to use fabric materials. At first glance, nothing prevents you from making a ceiling finish from fabric, non-woven or cork wallpaper. But in this case, the risk of fungus formation is tripled, since the ceiling is one of the wettest places in the bathroom.

The third method involves pasting the ceiling with polystyrene foam or polyurethane tiles. In theory, finishing can be done in one working day, but only if you have a perfectly flat ceiling in your bathroom. Otherwise, you will need to make a leveling base of drywall, and only after that stick the tiles. At the same time, leave a spare bucket of glue in stock, since it is very difficult to make a reliable fastening using conventional adhesive materials in a humid bathroom atmosphere.

Plasterboard suspended ceiling options

It turns out that it is not so easy to make a clean and absolutely even plastered ceiling in the bathroom without any decor. Therefore, the above scheme is resorted to only in one case, if for some reason the ceiling height in the bathroom is below the standard 250 cm. Therefore, if the size of the room allows, then a suspended version can be made.

Plasterboard ceiling

This is the most budget option for cladding the ceiling in the bathroom, which is quite simple to make with your own hands. The principle of arranging the ceiling surface practically does not differ from the technology of laying the cladding in the kitchen, balcony, and living quarters of the apartment.

In addition to the simplicity and low price of the material, the plasterboard ceiling in the bathroom allows you to solve several rather complex problems:

  • Installation of ceiling lights;
  • Broach and laying in the lintel most of the communications and pipes;
  • Masking channels of the ventilation system;
  • Installation of a ventilation system.

Note! For arranging the ceiling, only moisture-resistant sheets of industrial production can be used; any home-made options for pasting with a film or processing with glue of ordinary drywall are not suitable.

The first step is to mount the frame from a galvanized sheet profile. To do this, it will be necessary to line the line of the future frame on the wall, fix the profile with the help of plugs and self-tapping screws. The easiest way to beat off the horizon line is not with the help of a bubble level, but to use the version of the laser pointer or use a hydraulic device.

The next step inside the contour is to assemble a frame from a wide omega profile. In this case, it will be necessary to measure the dimensions of the purchased drywall sheets and position the internal profile so that the edges of the drywall always rest on the metal profile.

If it is planned to install lamps in the bathroom, then we carry out the wiring and wiring of the wires at the points of attachment of the spotlights. Each sheet of drywall will have to be tried on and sanded several times to reduce the size of the gaps to a minimum.

After the completion of the fixing operations, the joints are sealed with mounting tape and rubbed with putty, sanded and prepared for decorative finishing. Before performing finishing operations, you will need to choose the option of edging, strips or skirting boards that close the gap between the vertical wall of the bathroom and the edge of the drywall sheet.

Decorative ceiling finish

In the presence of a plasterboard base, any decorative material can be laid on the ceiling, you just need to take care of sufficiently powerful fasteners so that the entire ceiling structure does not collapse. The drywall surface can be simply painted, sealed with polystyrene tiles, or something special can be done, such as a mirrored ceiling in the bathroom.

In fact, this is the only reliable option for laying glass or mirror panels on the ceiling space. Meanwhile, the task of assembling a mirrored ceiling is considered one of the most difficult of all existing bathroom decor options. Glass and mirror well show all defects in the installation of a galvanized profile.

If a mirror ceiling is planned in the bathroom, then at the stage of assembling the plasterboard base, you will need to try to level the plane as accurately as possible, otherwise you will get an analogue of an attraction with crooked mirrors.

After the sheets are fixed, you can start sticking mirrors, usually a massive polycarbonate glass plate is used for alignment. Laid on polyurethane or epoxy glue, a row of individual sections of the mirror ceiling is attached to the plasterboard base with a polycarbonate plate and fixed with transverse struts. The next row of mirrors will be laid on the bathroom ceiling with an overlap, that is, the glass will simultaneously rest on the old and new row.

The joints between the mirrors are rubbed with transparent silicone, and the perimeter is closed with PVC edging. The mirror ceiling in the bathroom looks very nice, especially if you use not a blank mirror, but a translucent material with LED backlight. The only negative is that the glass perfectly collects all the splashes and dust, so the ceiling in the bathroom will have to be cleaned at least as often as the floor in order to somehow reduce labor, mirror and glass ceilings are treated with a car windshield protector.

From drywall, you can assemble absolutely any spatial structure, for example, a two-level ceiling in the bathroom.

In addition to mirrors, in a similar way, you can apply decorative plaster, make graphics or assemble a ceiling from carved polystyrene plates in the style of stucco or classic ceiling decor.

Finishing ceilings with wood and plastic

It is not necessary to turn the bathroom space into a model of decorative finishes and design, there are many more practical ways to make the ceiling attractive and as resistant as possible to the difficult conditions of the bathroom, for example, using aluminum and plastic.

Paneled ceilings

Plastic panels are, in fact, the only material that fully meets the requirements for cladding. Ceiling panels for the bathroom are not afraid of moisture and warm air, do not deform and do not swell when blown by air flows sucked in by ventilation. They are not afraid of fungus, they do not fade and do not become covered with cracks when the walls shrink. Ideal material for the ceiling in the bathroom.

Plastic for lining the ceiling in the bathroom is used in two forms:

  • In the form of cassette panels or plates 60x60 cm in size and 8-12 mm thick. The slabs are laid on a mounted frame made of wooden slats or a steel profile and fixed with silicone;
  • Strips 25 cm wide, with profiled ends for a tongue and groove. This allows you to join the plastic sheet in the bathroom without the use of mechanical fastening.

Note! The refusal to use mechanical fasteners is deliberate. With rare exceptions, plastic panels are made of polyvinyl chloride, a very practical material and ideal for cladding the bathroom ceiling, but at the same time quite fragile.

Any attempt to wrap a self-tapping screw ends in a long and ugly crack, so plastic ceilings in the bathroom are laid in the usual set and docking. To clad the ceiling, you will need to fix two load-bearing U-shaped gutters on opposite walls of the bathroom, this is best done with the help of "bugs". A starting profile is mounted along the leading edge of the gutters; it can be hung from the ceiling and thereby made invisible. It is clear that before you fix the entire U-shaped structure on the walls of the bathroom, you need to check the horizon using a water level.

The gutters play the role of guides into which PVC panels are successively inserted. To make the structure more rigid, the end joint is glued with "Titan" or "Dragon". You can make a joint on silicone sealant, but the silicone is too easily soiled, and after a couple of weeks, subtle dust marks will appear at the joints.

Slatted aluminum ceilings in the bathroom

Similarly, rack aluminum ceilings for the bathroom are made. The main difference is in the design of the front surface. Aluminum can have a mirror polished surface or an anodized matte finish. Such a lining costs at least three times more than PVC, but is much more durable and stronger than plastic panels. Both materials can be safely ranked among the most practical and convenient, which ceiling is better in the bathroom is a matter of taste, but metal will “live” 2-3 times longer than plastic, however, the process of washing aluminum, especially anodized, is quite laborious.

Aluminum has several significant disadvantages:

  • High chemical activity. Warm water vapor and evaporation of detergents, soaps, shampoos, which can collect a sufficient amount under the ceiling of the bathroom, very quickly lead to the formation of a thin white patina on the polished surface. Even more corrosive dots leave splash marks;
  • Aluminum panels, as well as polycarbonate plates, are able to expand even with high heat, so any mechanical fastenings must be made with a loose fit.

The metal has a high thermal conductivity, which means that condensation will always fall on aluminum. To avoid this, an additional fan or ventilation duct is installed in the lintel of the bathroom. Part of the air is sucked in through the slots, and most of the moisture and water vapor is removed without condensation.

Even with these shortcomings, aluminum panels can be considered one of the most successful options for finishing the bathroom ceiling. If the metal is coated with a protective silicone varnish, then the service life of such decor will be at least 30 years without loss of quality.

Ceiling trim with wooden slats

There are many opinions from professionals and amateur builders about how successfully wood can be used to decorate a bathroom. Wood, especially tinted, of expensive varieties looks great both on the walls and on the ceiling of any room.

But the tree has three serious drawbacks:

  • The dimensions of a wooden plank or lath depend on the moisture level of the wood;
  • It is quite difficult to make the surface of a tree neutral to the effects of water and condensate;
  • Not all wood can be used for bathroom ceiling cladding.

The excellent texture and pattern of the fibers look good on the ceiling only in relatively large rooms. Any attempt to cover the ceiling in a 3x2 m bathroom with a beautiful walnut or chestnut plank automatically leads to a visual reduction in the size of the room. Therefore, a wooden plank, rail or even a panel must first be bleached to make it light, almost white, and then tinted to match the decorative finish of the bathroom walls.

Light, almost colorless wood does not look very attractive, even after varnishing or toning, so wood finishing requires a very thoughtful and professional selection of the shape and method of stuffing the lath. If the work is done by a professional designer, then a beech or alder slatted ceiling can look no less impressive than glass or metal. It is clear that the planks or rails have to be stuffed onto the frame of the crate with hidden fasteners - nails without hats. Any self-tapping screws or carpenter's nails on the surface of the bathroom ceiling look out of place, and even worse if they rust after a month in the humid atmosphere of the bathroom.

To make wood resistant to condensation, experts recommend using varnishes based on epoxy resins. They practically do not affect the tone and color of the wood, but perfectly protect against condensation. It is not recommended to use impregnating oils, drying oils or varnishes. Such coatings can provide satisfactory protection against liquid water, but are practically useless under water vapor conditions.

The battens supporting the joists are best made from water-resistant species of spruce or larch impregnated with an antiseptic.

The slatted ceiling in the bathroom photo, even from the simplest types of wood, always has a special charm and warmth, but the use of wood texture will require the use of wood for interior decoration of walls and, possibly, furniture.

New bathroom ceiling solutions

A relatively new type of ceiling design based on a cassette or, more simply, a square or rectangular ceiling slab. The bathroom ceiling canvas is assembled like a chessboard from single cassettes laid on a pre-mounted supporting frame.

For the arrangement of cassette ceilings, slabs of 60x60 cm in size are used, other size groups for a bathroom apartment or house simply will not work.

Cassettes from:

  • polished aluminium;
  • Galvanized and enameled steel;
  • Glass and polycarbonate panels;
  • plastic sections.

Of all the above, only glass and plastic materials are suitable for arranging the ceiling in the bathroom. Polished aluminum cassettes oxidize very quickly in the humid environment of the bathroom, even after opening with protective varnishes.

Glass and plastic cassettes can be very beautiful, especially with the right arrangement of lighting and mosaics or drawings.

The assembly technology of the cassette ceiling is quite simple. Initially, a supporting frame is assembled from a galvanized or plastic profile in the form of square sections with horizontal support shelves located along the perimeter of each cell.

Wiring, lamps, ventilation elements and control valves are installed inside the frame. Next, a small amount of glue is applied to the ends of the cassettes, after which the plates are placed in the cells. In this case, the glue is used only for light plastic and aluminum.

For a large bathroom, experts recommend using a Cesal or Geipel cassette ceiling. In both cases, the cassettes are made of anodized aluminium, powder coated. The advantage of these models is good resistance to a humid environment and excellent decorative qualities. You can choose a specific background or pattern for the location of decorative panels.

The only major downside to cassette ceilings is simply the sheer amount of wasted space. On average, in order to make a ceiling, the air gap between the cassette and the floor slab should be 16-23 cm.

If you choose which ceiling is best done in the bathroom, you need to focus on the area of \u200b\u200bthe room. Otherwise, based on the above parameters, for a bathroom with a ceiling height of 250-270 cm, the loss of almost 10% of usable space will be very noticeable.

Stretch ceiling

Most apartment owners associate the system of French membrane ceilings with the design of the living room, but not with the bathroom. The tension system and the canvas itself are quite complicated, so the answer to the question of whether it is possible to make a stretch ceiling in the bathroom does not look so unambiguous. First of all, you should find out the pros and cons of a stretch ceiling in the bathroom.

How suitable is the design of the stretch fabric for the bathroom

The device of stretch ceilings involves the installation of a special system that holds a flexible and elastic membrane in a stretched state. The strength of a relatively thin canvas is enough to hold a weight of under one hundred kilograms per square meter. On the one hand, this is great:

  • Properly assembled stretch ceilings give exceptionally flat surfaces, which are enough to periodically wipe off dust and splash marks;
  • The ceiling membrane muffles noises and sounds, which will be useful in the bathroom;
  • PVC, on the basis of which the stretch ceiling material is made, does not oxidize, is not afraid of high temperatures, water vapor and hot air.

The relatively high price of arranging a stretch ceiling is more than offset by a long service life and excellent appearance. If the neighbors have problems with rusty communications and periodically heat up, the ceiling in the bathroom will not be covered with rusty spots that have to be eliminated regularly. Moreover, not a single drop will penetrate beyond the stretch fabric, and what is collected can be carefully drained.

However, with all these advantages, stretch ceilings have not become the most popular type of bathroom ceiling decor. In addition to the positive aspects, the stretch ceiling has several negative ones:

  • Like any elastic material, the stretch ceiling membrane is extremely sensitive to sharp objects, so care must be taken when cleaning and cleaning the ceiling surface in the bathroom;
  • If carob lamps are installed in the bathroom, which are too close to the surface of the stretch ceiling, then in a couple of years burnt spots will appear on the canvas due to heating from the lamps, which are almost impossible to remove;
  • The canvas is stretched over a system of horizontal bars made of metal or wood. Galvanized metal is durable, but it is well known that even galvanized steel will rust in a humid and hot atmosphere. If the supporting frame is made of wood, then the planks, under conditions of tensile load and contact with water, will quickly be bent by an arc.

If we add to this the water flowing from the top floor, it becomes clear that the usual scheme for fixing a stretch ceiling for a bathroom will not work. You will need at least a reinforced version of the profile with good anti-corrosion protection.

The last negative factor is the high tightness of the PVC membrane. After installing the canvas, the space between the floor slab and the membrane turns into a tightly sealed plastic bag. For ventilation in the stretch ceiling in the bathroom, a perforated bar is installed along the side edge of the canvas, through which excess moisture is removed by air flow.

Conclusion

Making a decorative ceiling in the bathroom will require good preparation and knowledge of the characteristics of the materials used. Comparing the options for manufacturing a ceiling from various materials, we can make the following recommendation. The cheapest and most practical option for finishing the ceiling is obtained from plastic panels, the most beautiful - from glass cassettes or anodized aluminum, the stretch ceiling claims to be the most unusual and spectacular.

It should also be noted some disadvantages:

  • need create a frame for attaching drywall sheets, and this additional time and costs. By the way, it is better to equip the bathroom with a metal frame rather than a wooden frame;
  • drywall slab top need to be primed and painted to get a pleasant-looking coating;
  • periodically need to repaint as dirt may accumulate in some places. To do this, however, even on your own, is not so difficult.

Number 3. Plastic panels

This finish can be called the golden mean in terms of price-to-appearance ratio. PVC panels have a lot of pluses, the most important of which are:

  • absolute moisture resistance and strength;
  • you can even install it yourself;
  • outwardly, this is a beautiful stylish finish that does not need additional processing, for example. With proper installation, the ceiling will look monolithic, and the panel joints will be impossible to recognize with the naked eye;
  • spotlights can be mounted in such a ceiling if such lighting matches your design idea;
  • the finish is very easy to maintain;
  • , which allows us to attribute this option to budget solutions. If the installation is carried out independently, then the cost of such a finish is generally minimal.

It didn't go without disadvantages:

  • if the ceiling is not assembled very skillfully, then the joints of the panels will be visible. But it's still half the trouble. Dirt and moisture will gradually begin to get into such joints, provoking, in the absence of proper mold development;
  • the metal frame to which the plastic plates are attached can rust over time, even if there is a galvanized coating. But if everything is in order with ventilation in the bathroom, then this should not happen;
  • quickly updating the coating, as, for example, in the case of painting, will not work - you will have to dismantle the old panels, and only then organize a new finish.

No. 4. Dropped ceilings

Today, suspended ceilings often mean plates, rails, modules made of plastic, plexiglass, metal, etc. attached to the frame. There are a lot of possible options, but it is important that the material is moisture resistant and matches the interior.

A definite plus such ceilings - that no additional priming or painting is required, as is the case with drywall. Finishing material already has an attractive appearance, with which you can create a unique interior in the bathroom. In addition, any false ceiling can be equipped with built-in lighting, all communications can be hidden under the structure, providing the most attractive view of the entire structure.

Among the minuses, one can note the fact that the room will become 10-15 cm lower. Moreover, often the cost and installation of a suspended ceiling is a rather expensive pleasure, and the simplest cellular or cassette ceilings will not give the bathroom proper home comfort, resembling an office or a public toilet.

No. 5. rack ceiling

No. 6. Styrofoam boards

This is one of the most inexpensive and simple options for finishing the ceiling in the bathroom, which at the same time has controversial decorative qualities. Often they are even glued to the ceiling, thus simplifying and reducing the cost of installation. With foam tiles, you can hide significant irregularities and flaws in the ceiling. All work can be done independently, and this is a significant savings, and in the end, such a finish will be very cheap.

But, unfortunately, foam boards do not have proper decoration, although they often have interesting relief. You can transform them a little with the help of coloring, and if you do it in an original way, using several colors, you can create a very good interior. These slabs are moisture resistant and perform well in operation, but due to their cheap appearance, they will not fit well into every bathroom. However, such a budget option for finishing is perfect for those who do not have huge funds for repairs or want to make temporary repair during the shrinkage of the new building, for example.

No. 7. Mirror ceiling

No. 8. Stretch PVC ceiling

Nevertheless, stretch ceilings have some disadvantages:

  • relative high cost, in addition, it is also necessary to pay for the services of professionals - you cannot master the installation of such a structure yourself;
  • the material is delicate, so it is easy to make a hole during cleaning, and then many useful performance characteristics will be lost;
  • You need to be extremely careful with lighting fixtures. If they are too powerful, then the ceiling material may begin to melt.

No. 9. wooden ceiling

The wooden ceiling in the bathroom is beautiful, unusual and stylish. Most often used for finishing ceilings wooden lining, which preserves the noble appearance of wood, its smell and warmth. materials impregnated with protective properties, or apply a protective layer yourself. The type of wood also plays an important role: it is better to choose those varieties that are naturally most resistant to moisture, and this is teak wood.

The wooden ceiling makes the bathroom stylish, and at the same time its installation will not be very difficult, since the lining is attached to the frame with nails. The only thing is that it is necessary to carefully care for the wood and cover it with protective agents in time so that it does not deform and become moldy.

- another good option for finishing the ceiling in the bathroom, since there are special formulations on sale that are not afraid of water and that can be easily applied even on your own. The result is a strong, durable and environmentally friendly coating.

With the help of decorative plaster, you can create a huge range of different textures and effects on the ceiling, and in each case the surface will turn out to be unique, because it will be impossible to repeat the pattern in another room in the same way. You can also choose any color.

Plasters are ideal for bathrooms acrylic-based, which have excellent water-repellent properties. You can also use Venetian plaster. With its help, you can imitate almost any surface, give it a glossy effect, create stains and other effects.

Absolutely anyone can handle the application of most types of decorative plaster, because preliminary leveling of the surface is not required. Another advantage is that plaster practically does not take away the height of the room.

What ceiling to make in the bathroom? Of course, practical, beautiful and desirable, not very expensive. In order to get just such, in addition to the aesthetic qualities and preferences in the material, you need to take into account all aspects and nuances of the state of a particular room, and also know what general technical requirements the ceilings in the bathrooms must meet.

Aluminum panel ceiling

Features and requirements for ceilings in the bathroom

In order for the ceiling in the bathroom not only to look beautiful, but also to serve for a long time, without causing any trouble during its operation, you need to know what qualities it must have and what technical requirements it must meet.

Mirrored ceiling in the bathroom, base wooden lath

Of course, considering what ceiling to make in the bath, first of all, you need to consider that the main difference between this room and all the others is that it is always warm and damp in it, which is the perfect combination for the appearance and growth of mold.

In addition, this combination leads to the formation of corrosion and rust on metal and rotting in wood that has not been treated with special building and moisture-protecting solutions.

Plexiglas glass ceiling

Therefore, the use of metal and wooden elements in the structure is undesirable, unless, of course, they are covered with protective layers, for example,. In general, the design of the ceiling in the bathroom should:

  • be protected from moisture or have complete immunity to it;
  • do not require careful maintenance, and if necessary, easy to clean;
  • do not interact with the environment, that is, do not emit any fumes;
  • must be made with the possibility of access to all elements and fasteners, for their easy replacement or cleaning if necessary.

Plastic ceiling, base frame made of wooden beams

The design of the ceiling is not limited by anything other than imagination and the budget allotted for it, that is, which ceiling is better to do in the bathroom, depends only on how a particular person imagines it.

Types of bathroom ceilings (features, pros, cons)

Design methods, that is, options for what ceiling can be done in the bathroom, enough. The most simple, familiar and budgetary include the following - whitewashing, plastering and painting. Among the most expensive and complex, it is worth highlighting such ceilings as glass structures, mirror ceilings, ceilings with photo printing.

Cassette ceiling

Among those in the middle price category, the most popular are such design options as plastic sheathing, the use of foam tiles and vinyl wallpaper, hinged structures made of inexpensive and moisture-resistant materials, for example, from processed chipboard or.

Colored stretch ceiling

For each method, what ceiling to make in the bathroom, there is reviews highlighting the main advantages and disadvantages. It is easy to find discussions of the pros and cons of various options for how exactly you can repair the ceiling and read reviews about various materials on specialized forums, in online stores and in social network groups.

Whitewashing, painting and plastering

The advantages of these, without exaggeration, already classic repair methods include:

  • all materials that are required are always on sale;
  • all work can be done by hand and quickly;
  • the paint is not susceptible to moisture, and the lime that is part of the solutions for whitewashing and plastering is a powerful antiseptic, that is, it prevents the likelihood of mold.

The disadvantages include such nuances as:

  • very simple, unpresentable in appearance, appearance;
  • significant preliminary surface preparation - leveling, "scraping" from the existing coating or washing off the old whitewash, or some other work;
  • the need to refresh the design at least once every couple of years;
  • when spray hits a whitewashed ceiling, stains and smudges remain on it.

Bathroom under the stairs, matte stretch ceiling

Painting has other advantages - the ability to show imagination, up to painting the ceilings, and when using modern bulk mixtures for plastering, you can create any texture and give absolutely any shade to the surface.

Vinyl wallpaper, PVC tiles, plastic, chipboard and drywall

Materials that are in the middle price segment also have their pluses and minuses.

The undoubted advantages include such nuances:

  • low cost of finishing;
  • relatively low complexity of the work, everything can be done independently, with the exception of hinged structures, but they can also be done by hand with the appropriate tool;
  • cozy and neat appearance of the finished ceiling.

The disadvantages include features such as:

  • surface preparation is no less troublesome than for painting;
  • under hinged canvases, both from moisture-resistant drywall and from treated chipboard, a layer of mold can form, the same is true for vinyl wallpapers designed specifically for bathrooms;
  • it is extremely difficult for one person to cope with the installation of a false ceiling and sticking wallpaper on the ceiling;
  • some types of design will require a special tool, knowledge and experience.

Ceiling made of pvc plastic panels

Plastic ceilings made of panels seem ideal - no thorough preparation is required, the material itself is absolutely not susceptible to moisture and is easy to clean, and it looks quite aesthetically pleasing and, which is not unimportant, will not require replacement or adjustment for many years.

But plastic panels also have their drawbacks. Of course, first of all, this is what will require some skill tools and a careful selection of hardware and profiles for the supporting structure, because, unlike the plastic itself, they are very susceptible to moisture.

Tiled ceiling

The second drawback is the likelihood of mold formation on the inside of the coating, in the gap between the ceiling and the panels, in the event that there is a slight flood from above or under some other circumstances favorable for the fungus.

Other design options

Prioritizing the question what ceiling to make in the bathroom, expensive and exclusive types of design made of glass, mirror blocks or any other types of materials, you need to understand that they will also have certain disadvantages, but which ones depends on the material itself and the means that will be used during installation works.

Two-level stretch ceiling

In general, going make a ceiling in the bathroom and toilet, it should, in addition to all of the above, take into account the footage of the room, because when decorating small areas, very expensive materials can be allowed, since very few of them are required, which means that the cost will be quite acceptable at any level of income.

Carrying out repairs in the bathroom, many pay all their attention to engineering communications and the method of finishing the walls, ignoring such an equally important element of the room as the ceiling. Although in fact the ceiling also requires special attention. Depending on the wall finishing material, ceiling installation can be carried out both before and after wall finishing. In this article, we will talk about what are the options for the ceiling in the bathroom, and consider each of them in as much detail as possible.

What are the requirements for ceilings in the bathroom

It is worth noting that the bathroom is a room with constant high humidity and frequent temperature changes. Therefore, any version of the ceiling device in the bathroom must meet special requirements.

Before deciding what material to make the ceiling in the bathroom, you need to take into account the following requirements for finishing materials:

  1. Enhanced hydrophobic qualities. The material must have high water resistance - not deteriorate during operation in conditions of high humidity. You should always be prepared for the fact that the ceiling covering will be splashed with water (for example, children can accidentally direct a stream of rain directly onto the ceiling). The material should easily cope with such an impact.
  2. Ease of maintenance. This is very important for those who have high ceilings in the bathroom, and a stepladder is indispensable for cleaning them. Many owners with 3 meter ceilings in the bathroom may face a banal problem - replacing a light bulb in a lamp. In this case, even improvised means will not help to solve the problem. As a result, due to your thoughtlessness, you will again and again have to sweep dust from the ceiling, which, for example, was covered with some kind of decorative material. It should be noted that due to the above reason, it is not recommended to hang chandeliers in the bathroom. Such lighting devices are rather poorly operated in an environment with high humidity. At the same time, they are equipped with so many small parts that you simply get tired of servicing them after a few months. Don't even try to test it out for yourself.
  3. High aesthetic properties. In addition to the operational and technical characteristics of the finishing material for the ceiling, it is also worth paying attention to how it looks externally. It's no secret that in the process of taking a bath, the gaze is directed precisely at the ceiling.

Ways to decorate the ceiling in the bathroom

Now it’s worth considering in more detail how to sew up the ceiling in the bathroom. Naturally, the list will not be complete, but these will be the most common options, from which everyone can choose the best suitable solution for themselves.

Puttying and painting

Perhaps everyone knows that the easiest way to finish the ceiling in the bathroom is to simply putty it and paint it. Almost everyone can do this type of work with their own hands, while the materials themselves will need to spend a minimum of money.

However, before you make the ceiling in the bathroom with this method, it is worth considering a number of important nuances:

  1. Puttying followed by painting is cost effective only if the ceiling has a flat base and you do not have to eliminate significant height differences by spending a lot of putty. In addition, in order for a thick layer of putty to be able to stay on the ceiling, additional skills and costs will be needed.
  2. As a topcoat, use paint, not chalk-based compounds, as some craftsmen may advise. Otherwise, you will have to re-whitewash the three-meter ceiling more than once a year.

Due to the fact that the pros and cons of such a ceiling covering for a bathroom will differ for many people, it is worth listing exactly its technical characteristics and performance properties, and everyone will decide for himself which of them are best suited for solving a particular task.

It is worth highlighting the following performance qualities and technical characteristics of the putty ceiling:

  1. The finished ceiling will not look perfect from a design point of view, but if it is painted in different colors, it will acquire some uniqueness. If you have a design talent, then with the use of paint you can create a truly work of art.
  2. A puttied and painted ceiling can serve for quite a long time - up to 10 years. But this is taking into account that during this time the neighbors from above will not spoil everything. Therefore, if incidents of this kind often occur in your apartment, once again think about how best to finish the ceiling in the bathroom in this case. It is understood that such a finishing material, under the direct influence of moisture, quickly deteriorates. And although such flaws are relatively easy to eliminate, you should always have a brush, paint and a stepladder on hand, without which it will be quite problematic to get to the ceiling.
  3. The ceiling does not require much effort in its maintenance, but over time it will darken anyway. This happens because particles of dirt eat into the paint, which are washed off with detergents worse and worse over time.
  4. Such a ceiling cannot be equipped with engineering communications, especially for the ventilation system and electric lighting. In this case, it remains to be content with a pendant or wall-mounted lamp and a fan mounted in a niche (without air outlets).

For many, it is the last point that will become the decisive factor in deciding which ceilings are best for the bathroom, namely, not to use this finishing method.

Plastic panels

Such panels are made of PVC - a special plastic with technical characteristics that are best suited for use in rooms with high humidity.

To make it easier to decide which ceiling to make in the bathroom, it is worth listing all the advantages and disadvantages of this material.

Advantages:

  1. Plastic panels are very durable and perfectly cope with mechanical stress. This means that if you accidentally touch the panel with an object, the polymer will remain intact. Naturally, due to strong impact, dents and scratches may remain.
  2. Plastic is not afraid of high humidity and even direct contact with water - neither its appearance nor its performance will deteriorate in any way.
  3. When deciding which bathroom ceiling is best for you, keep in mind that material such as plastic is easy to install on your own. The main thing at the same time is to properly mount the metal profile, and everyone can handle the plastic sheathing.
  4. The plastic surface is quite easy to care for. For cleaning, it is enough to use simple detergents and a rag.
  5. Between the ceiling and the panels, you can hide any number of communications, such as electrical wiring, lighting, as well as a ventilation system.

The disadvantages include:

  1. For plastic panels, you will need to install a frame made of metal or wood. A structure made of wood, even of high quality, will deteriorate after a while, which will require the manufacture of a new one. To extend the life of such a ceiling, it is recommended to equip the bathroom with high-quality ventilation.
  2. Any panels after installation form cracks into which dust accumulates over time. The accumulated dirt can be easily removed with a rag, however, if the room has high humidity, mold begins to form in the seams, which cannot be eliminated without an antiseptic.
  3. As you know, plastics have a negative impact on human health, as they release harmful chemicals. In fact, modern materials are absolutely safe for humans - this is confirmed by the relevant quality certificates.

When choosing which ceilings are best done in the bathroom, you should pay attention to the fact that the plastic ceiling looks good in combination with the use of this material on the walls.

However, if you are a person with a sophisticated taste that requires something special, you may be interested in the next type of ceiling, namely, on slats.

Ceiling made of aluminum rails

This kind of ceiling is called rack. The name, as many could already understand, was formed from the use of long parts installed on the crate. On sale you can find rails made of aluminum and other metals, as well as plastic.

Many people choose aluminum rails because of their special performance characteristics. This metal is not afraid of oxidation, it is not even afraid of water. In addition, the appearance of aluminum panels will not leave anyone indifferent even without the use of any decorative finish.

To better understand which ceiling to install in the bathroom, take into account that the rack ceiling is presented by manufacturers in the following versions:

  • chromium-plated;
  • under gilding;
  • monotonous products;
  • patterned panels.

These panels are somewhat bendable, allowing for curved designs to meet specific design requirements.

Installation of panels does not raise any questions at all. They are equipped with everything you need, so even a beginner who has assembled a children's designer at least once in his life will cope with the installation process. The main thing before such work is to thoroughly study the installation instructions.

Keep in mind that when choosing which ceiling to make in the bathroom, slatted ceilings have three disadvantages:

  1. If your choice fell on slats that fit tightly together, dirt will still accumulate in the seams. Of course, you can get rid of it by simply wiping it with a damp cloth.
  2. The slatted ceiling should be part of the interior style. Remember that not every bathroom will have such a ceiling solution. In any case, the overall interior should be worked out in advance.
  3. The finished design will make the room a little lower. Some people may like it, because as a result it is possible to disguise engineering communications, while for others such a ceiling will, as it were, “press” on the head, unless of course you have three-meter ceilings. In order to get rid of this effect, it is best to install ceilings with a glossy surface - this will visually increase the space a little.

Plasterboard false ceiling

Drywall sheets, as well as plastic lining, are installed on a pre-mounted crate, which in turn can be made of galvanized or wooden profiles. It is still better not to use wooden slats, especially in rooms with high humidity, as this will quickly make them unusable.

For the bathroom, of course, moisture-resistant drywall should be purchased, which is treated with an antiseptic composition and is designed for use in aggressive environments. Thus, it will be possible not to be afraid about the possible appearance of mold and other dangerous microorganisms.

Moisture-resistant drywall is distinguished by its coloring - it is green with an additional GKLV marking.

The advantages of a plasterboard ceiling include:

  1. The possibility of organizing a special, unique ceiling in the bathroom. Many prefer the installation of multi-level structures of any curvature.
  2. A certain amount of engineering communications can fit behind the crate. The lamps installed in such a ceiling fit perfectly into the overall design of the bathroom.
  3. Installation of such a design will easily mask any curvature and other shortcomings of interfloor slabs.
  4. The plasterboard suspended ceiling is also characterized by a long service life.

However, there are also disadvantages:

  1. Such a ceiling costs a lot. In this case, you will have to spend money not only on materials, but also on the services of experienced craftsmen who can translate your wishes into reality.
  2. For the ceiling, you will need to organize a decorative finish. In any case, you will need to buy putty, primer and paint. And this is without taking into account the time spent on such a process.
  3. The ceiling covering will need to be updated occasionally, because over time it loses its former brightness due to the presence of constant excessive humidity in the room.

If, when deciding which ceilings are best done in the bathroom, you don’t want to spend extra money on slats, and you simply don’t have so much time to install drywall, you can pay attention to another type of suspended ceilings, which we’ll talk about later.

Hanging tiles

For installation on the ceiling of suspended tiles, it is also necessary to build a special frame from a metal profile, in the cells of which ready-made tiles or cassettes will be placed.

Unlike suspended ceilings sheathed with plasterboard, in this case the tiles have a finished appearance, that is, they do not require further finishing, such as painting or puttying. This is their great advantage.

In the cells of the frame ceiling, you can place tiles made of the following materials:

  • plexiglass;
  • plastic;
  • mineral plates;
  • metal.

If the ceiling tiles in the bathroom are supplemented with built-in LED lighting, then a rather original design is obtained. Thanks to a variety of color solutions for lighting, you can highlight individual objects in the room, or make it look like a spaceship.

It is worth noting that when deciding which ceiling to make in the bathroom, the choice does not always fall on hanging tiles, since in some cases they can look somewhat bureaucratic, like in an office, and you can’t pick them up for any interior. Not everyone will want to look at a boring and uninteresting ceiling, devoid of grace.

However, for lovers of minimalism or high-tech style, a metal tile ceiling will perfectly reflect their preferences.

Mirror ceilings

Among the options for which ceilings are best done in the bathroom, it is worthwhile to dwell on mirrors separately. Although such a ceiling will cost significantly more than traditional materials, the end result will be worth the effort and money spent. Mirrors on the ceiling in the bathroom will expand the space visually and effectively emphasize the interior of the room.

Since the mass of the mirror sheet is large enough, it requires the installation of a reinforced frame to mount it. In the mirrors themselves, to fix them on the metal profiles with the help of screws, you will need to drill holes. This task is far from easy.

Alternatively, you can use not real mirrors, but mirror panels that have good reflectivity. They are installed on a special, quickly mounted suspension system. This work does not take much time and effort.

Please note that prefabricated frames for inexpensive mirror panels are often prone to corrosion, so they must be mounted in such a way as to ensure air flow.

It is worth noting that the mirrors on the ceiling in the bathroom still have certain disadvantages, including:

  1. Sometimes the mirrored ceiling glares too much, so that it interferes and irritates the eyesight. If the ceilings are very low or a person spends a lot of time in the bathroom, he may not like this option.
  2. Dust is quickly collected on the mirrors, which is quite clearly visible. Therefore, in order for the appearance of the ceiling to please the eye, it will often have to be looked after, which can be very difficult. In this regard, when deciding to arrange a mirrored ceiling in the bathroom, think about how and who will wash it.

Stretch ceiling

Finally, another example of what kind of ceilings are made in the bathroom is a stretch fabric. This version of the ceiling has recently become increasingly popular among consumers. And there is a reason.

The advantages of a stretch ceiling are obvious:

  • not afraid of moisture, retains its original appearance and properties in a humid environment;
  • no additional finishing measures are required;
  • great for masking wires or communication boxes running under the ceiling;
  • easy to clean - you can use ordinary household chemicals for cleaning;
  • a variety of colors and textures - glossy, matte, with a two- or three-dimensional image.

In addition, if you are flooded by neighbors from above or the roof leaks, the stretch fabric is able to hold a fairly large amount of water. After the masters arrive and drain the water, the ceiling will return to its original state.

Disadvantages, in our opinion, the stretch ceilings are few enough.

The most significant of them are:

  1. The special technology of installation of stretch ceilings and the need for special equipment make this type of repair impossible for one's own execution.
  2. PVC fabric, despite its strength characteristics, is afraid of sharp objects. That is, it can be easily damaged. In this case, the appearance of the ceiling will be spoiled, and it will not be able to hold water from above.

Please note that in combination with stretch ceilings, it is desirable to install low-power LED lighting devices. They do not create high temperatures during operation, unlike halogen lamps, for example. Therefore, the PVC fabric at the point of contact with the spotlight will not turn yellow and will not deform.

For all those who have yet to make a difficult choice in favor of one or another type of ceiling covering for the bathroom, here are a few recommendations:

  1. The first thing to remember is that the ceiling should organically fit into the interior of the bathroom itself. It is also desirable that at the same time it does not contrast too much with the rest of the rooms in the apartment, that is, it does not stand out from the general color scheme. Therefore, it is best, of course, to stay on a white coating. It can be stretch, plasterboard or cellular. If desired, spotlights can be installed.
  2. If the space for one reason or another does not quite suit you in size, you can visually expand or narrow it with the help of textured surfaces. The texture will be clearly visible on modular and slatted ceiling materials.
  3. Owners of spacious bathrooms can afford to equip multi-level ceilings. They are constructed from drywall and frame structures. The geometry of the levels can be very different - combined in shape and size with functional areas, highlight individual objects. There may be many options.
  4. If the goal is an inexpensive, practical ceiling without any frills, plastic panels will be the best option.

The stretch ceiling is also practical, but its installation will require additional payment for the construction team.

Results

Thus, there are a lot of options for arranging the ceiling in the bathroom. All of them differ in cost, appearance, complexity of execution and features of care. Therefore, everyone chooses the material that meets his requirements the most.
