Was a member of the swim team. He began studying karate and aikido from a young age, and also participated in wrestling tournaments in his teenage years. He became interested in sambo at the age of 16 under the guidance of the Bulgarian sambo champion Valeri Ignatov. Received a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2007. Teaches brother Nate this martial art in Lodi, California. Supports the legalization of marijuana.

He began to compete in professional MMA fights in 2001 after his eighteenth birthday. He won his debut fight at the IFC Warriors Challenge 15 by submission against Mike Vick using a triangle choke. He became the welterweight champion in his second professional fight, defeating Chris Little in 2002.

Diaz was invited to the Ultimate Athlete's King of the Mountain tournament, which lasted only a night, where he won the first two bouts, but lost the third against Jeremy Jackson by knockout.

He made his first title defense against Joe Hurley and defeated Kimura by submission.

Defended his IFC Welterweight Championship in a rematch with Jeremy Jackson at IFC Warriors Challenge 18. Diaz won by TKO in the first round, becoming the IFC Americas Champion and also the ISKA-MMA Americas Champion. At this point, the UFC decided to sign Diaz to a contract, the athlete made his debut at UFC 44, speaking out against Jackson for the third time and securing his victory with an armbar in the last round.

He returned to the octagon at UFC 47 against EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler. Lawler was the favorite of the fight, despite this, Diaz dominated the fight, not allowing the fighter to move away from the cage. In the second round, Diaz teased Lawler, who staggered and missed, allowing Diaz to knock out his opponent with a right hook.

Diaz next fought judoka Karo Parisian but lost by split decision in a tough fight.

He returned to the ring to fight grappler Diego Sanchez in the reality show The Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale. Before the fight, Diaz was confident, but was unable to control the fight, losing to Sanchez via unanimous decision.

Diaz's next fight was against Joe Riggs. Diaz taunted his adversary in press conferences, and as with Sanchez, Riggs didn't get left behind. The fighters were separated by UFC President Dana White and others.

In the head-to-head fight, Riggs confidently dominated and won by decision.

Diaz returned to his hometown of Stockton and competed in ICF tournaments. The first opponent was Ray Steinbeiss, Diaz defeated him by decision. The second time, Diaz was supposed to go against Canadian John Alessio, but he received an offer from the UFC to replace the ailing Thiago Alves right before the fight.

After Alessi was eliminated from the card, Diaz used the opportunity to enter the ring against veteran Josh Neer and defeated him via submission in the third round. He later defeated Brazilian rookie Gleison Tibau with punches. However, after this win, and confident that the UFC would give him another fight, Diaz signed with Gracie Fighting Championships and retired from the UFC. Diaz was scheduled to face Thomas Denny in January 2007, but poor ticket sales caused the tournament to be cancelled.

This time around, Diaz signed a two-fight contract with PRIDE FC and took on lightweight champion Takanori Gomi in a non-title fight. Gomi got off to a solid start, putting Diaz on the floor with a punch and breaking through the defense twice, but Diaz dominated the stance, landing fast and accurate jabs and other punches. At the end of the first round, the Japanese was stunned, trying to land wild punches, and barely kept his defense. He was deducted a point for illegal strikes, Diaz received a cut under the eye. The second round did not bring anything new, the Japanese gave out wild blows, then the fight was transferred to the ground, Diaz held a chokehold “gogoplata”. This was the second successful event in PRIDE history.

In 2007, it was announced that Diaz had failed a drug test shortly after defeating Gomi, specifically for marijuana. The fight was left without a decision, Diaz was suspended from fighting for six months and took 20% of his fee for the fight with Gomi. Diaz was suspected of using marijuana as a performance-enhancing drug, but the fighter denied using it.

In 2007, Diaz moved to EliteXC. He won in a tough fight by split decision against Mike Ain. Diaz signed a two-year deal with the organization and next fought drummer Carl James Noons for the vacant 72.5 kg title. At first, the fighters were equal in the standing position, but Noons laid down Diaz with a well-timed right counter. Diaz tried several takedowns, all of which were blocked by Noons. Diaz suffered a significant eye injury from a right knee, the doctor stopped the fight after several blows to Diaz's forehead. Frustrated, Diaz immediately left the arena, pushing the doctor out of the arena and pushing the camera away from his face.

Diaz had to undergo surgery, his bone was moved down to prevent serious injuries during the next fights.

The next time Diaz went up against Mahsin Corbray in Honolulu (Hawaii) and won. After this event, Nick and his brother found themselves in a skirmish with Carl James Noons, a Hawaiian native, and his cornerman. Diaz was asked by EliteXC to comment on a possible rematch with Noons. After Nick's words "Don't be afraid, bro," Noons' father tried to attack Diaz, to which Nick's brother Nate threw a bottle of water at him.

Nick met veteran Thomas Denny in Stockton, California. After a sluggish start to the fight, Diaz continued with more confidence, found his range and dominated the second half of the first round. The whole fight was kept at a high pace and a good stance, ending the fight with a spectacular knockout at the very beginning of the second round. There were rumors of a rematch with Noons in a title fight, but Noons pulled out of the fight. Instead, Diaz met with Eddie Alvarez under the auspices of EliteXC, the organization later ceased operations.

In the next fight, Diaz faced Katsuya Inoue at DREAM 3 and inflicted a powerful technical knockout on the opponent in the first round. Inoue's corner stopped the fight. It wasn't long before a Strikeforce spokesperson announced that Diaz would fight MMA legend Frank Shamrock at a catchweight of 81.1kg. In the main battle of the Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz Nick defeated Shamrock via TKO with punches in the first round. The whole fight was controlled by Diaz, showing himself well on the ground, by the end of the first round being in the mount. He finished the fight with a blow to the body, then finished off the enemy with a series of blows. The referee stopped the fight.

Diaz next faced former UFC veteran Scott Smith, a heavy handed athlete. The fight took place in the intermediate weight of 81.6 kg. Smith landed a takedown in the first round, Diaz controlled most of the fight, using superior stance and reach, chasing the opponent with jabs, hooks to the body, knocking him down twice in the second and third rounds. In the third round, Smith took the turtle position and Diaz finished the fight with a rear naked choke at 1:41 of the last round.

It was planned that Joe Riggs would become the next opponent of Nick Diaz in the August rematch. The last time the fighters fought in a cage, and then ended up in the hospital. The bout was scheduled to take place at the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship, but Riggs pulled out of the competition due to a positive drug test. Instead, Diaz was scheduled to face former IFL welterweight champion Jay Heron for the title. But Diaz refused to take a drug test, and instead Jay Heron fought Jesse Taylor and won by unanimous decision.

Rookie and future DREAM welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis fell victim to Diaz in January 2010. Zaromskis started aggressively on the stand, Diaz pinned the opponent down and landed countless knees to Zaromskis' right leg. Diaz then landed a takedown and was about to land a guillotine choke, but was quickly dropped by his opponent. Opponents then boxed in the stance, Zaromskis sent Diaz to the floor with a left hook and landed several effective punches as Diaz took the turtle position, which allowed him to recover and get back on his feet. In the few minutes remaining, Diaz put on some superb boxing, using combinations of jabs, hooks, and body punches, forcing the opponent into the cage, where he landed a powerful uppercut that took Zaromskis to the ground. The referee stopped the fight at 4:38 of the first round. Diaz became the Strikeforce Welterweight Champion.

In a non-title fight, he defeated former PRIDE veteran Hayato Sakurai by armbar submission. Defended his title from Carl James Noons in a rematch of their 2007 fight. The judges gave the victory to Diaz by unanimous decision. Defeated Evangelista Santos by armbar submission in the second round. Then he defeated Paul Daly by technical knockout at the end of the first round. After these bouts, he became the first Strikeforce welterweight champion to defend his belt three times.

Dana White says there is a possibility of a match between Diaz and UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. The bout was initially rumored to take place as part of The Ultimate Fighter 14, but the show aired with different trainers. White later tweeted that Diaz would face St-Pierre at UFC 137 in October 2011. Nick Diaz vacated his title before the fight with Saint-Pierre. White chose not to take Diaz to fight St-Pierre, replacing him with former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion and future Interim UFC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit, as Diaz missed several press conferences to promote the fight. Instead, it was decided that Diaz would face BJ Penn in the main event of UFC 137, whom Nick defeated by unanimous decision. After the fight, he challenged St-Pierre, who was supposed to fight Penn, but couldn't due to a knee injury.

With St. Pierre still recovering from his injury, Diaz defeated Carlos Condit for the interim UFC welterweight title, but Diaz soon tested positive for marijuana. The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended the athlete from the competition and ordered a disciplinary hearing. The commission decided that Diaz was punished with a year of suspension and forfeited 30% of the fee for the fight against Condit. In February 2013, Diaz returned to the ring.

Diaz nevertheless met St. Pierre in March 2013 in a title fight for the UFC welterweight belt, but lost by unanimous decision.

In July 2013, Diaz retired from MMA competition, but White stated that he left while he had money to rest, but he should be expected in the future.

White offered Diaz a fight with Michael Bisping, a rematch with Carlos Condit, but Diaz rejected these offers, saying that he would return only for the title fight.

In July 2014, Diaz signed a three-fight contract with the UFC. He fought Anderson Silva in early 2015 but lost by decision. It soon became known that Diaz failed texts on drugs after the fight, and Silva's results showed anabolics before the fight. Silva was punished with a year of suspension, although he rejected the use of anabolic steroids, indicating that he took a pill to sleep. The athlete was deprived of the bonus for the fight and 30% of the fee for the performance. The result of the fight was changed to "no decision".

In September 2015, Diaz was given a five-year suspension and a $165,000 fine. Subsequently, the sentence was reduced to 18 months and $100,000. The suspension expired in August 2016. However, as of November 2016, he is technically on suspension due to outstanding fines. For this reason, he could not be his brother Nate Diaz's cornerman at UFC 196 and 202.

"I'm the only one who has invested everything in a fighting life," Diaz was quoted as saying by MMAFighting.com. “That's why other guys prefer to keep quiet - they are too worried about what their families, wives and others will think. They prefer to keep quiet. But I gave everything to the fighting life and therefore I speak openly about what I think. ” Nick Diaz, UFC fighter
“Other fighters have a life on the side, and I have never had another job. I didn't even finish eighth grade. I could do it, but I fought too much in high school."
“My mom and dad taught me the alphabet and that was the end of my education. I moved from school to school, used drugs. My classmates laughed at me - when I lost my temper in class, the teachers told them that I was on medication, and sometimes I forgot to take them.
“This is complete pi..c. You have no idea what it's like. I wanted to beat everyone in the class, even the girls, when they said, “What happened? Did you forget to take your medicine again?"
“When my mom lost her house, I had to move in with my grandparents in Lodi. Can you imagine what it's like to go to a decent Lodi school after school in Stockton with blacks and Asians? They tried to kick me out of school and get me hooked on drugs. When I moved to this school, there was no one like me and everyone wore the same school uniform. I started fighting a lot and I was just kicked out of school.”
“I had a hot girlfriend, but I was always shy about how I dressed and besides, I had to often fight, because her ex-boyfriend was the captain of the football team, sitting on steroids”
“One day, my friend Bart and I had a huge massacre, after which we were both expelled from school. I tried to continue homeschooling, but nothing came of it. That's when I started training to become a professional fighter. By then, my friend had started dating Bart to annoy me and make me jealous. Bart went everywhere with a gun, so few dared to anger him.
“Shortly before my first professional fight in 2000, Bart threw a house party. Stephanie had told me the day before that she only loved me. After the party, we were going to go to her house together, but some of my friends were sick, and I need to help them get home.
“An hour later her mother called me and asked, “Is Stephanie with you?” It turns out that she threw herself under a car, committing suicide. When I got to the place, I saw only an ambulance. The girl I loved most in my life tried to commit suicide for the third time, and finally she succeeded.
“She should have gone to college. She was a successful student, and did everything I couldn't do, living in a trailer park where everyone was on drugs. All my high school years, I wondered what she or her friends would think if I lost in a fight to her ex-boyfriend and friends from his football team. I spent little time with her, communicating with bad people, and could not keep her close and protect her. I had no money, no car - I can't go after her and stop her. After that, I kind of grew up. I was no longer a child. I won my first fight by choke in the first round, but at that moment I only thought about Stephanie. I couldn't think of anything else"
“After the fight, I ran seven miles to her grave and promised her that I would become a fighter and that she would be proud of me.”
“The Commission did everything to put me in the position I am in now. They disqualified me for the third time. Five damn years for making the world a little better. It was like that from the very beginning, and I was not going to become a different person. When the Commission announced its decision, I wanted to stand up and tell them to their faces what I think of them, but I didn't. I just have to live with it"
“You know, actually, I'm the real Conor McGregor. I am his original model. I have nothing against Conor, but I, unlike him, am real. I never took steroids, I learned to fight and did it honestly. That's why I became the best fighter in the world."
“Guys like Conor use a whole team of agents and lawyers to get a good contract, and I myself found the right agent and made good money by signing a deal for the last fight, because I didn’t even finish the fucking eighth grade”
“Now I am very upset that I cannot be near my brother, who will soon have to fight. I brought him into this sport, and he doesn't even get decent money for being punched in the face. We live it, and if I can't make money with fights, we simply won't have any other options.

Have you ever had the feeling that you are standing on a mine? At such moments, thoughts of hopelessness come. But in this case, there are always two options. You can jump away and fall flat on the ground, but what is it like to live later without legs? What is it like to live as if something has been torn from you and the only thing you can do is return your thoughts to that damn mine. To think that you could have taken a different path, taken a step back, or just stopped for a moment. In 2000 Nick Diaz stepped on such a mine. It is not clear whether this case made Nick even more aggressive and apathetic, or vice versa - if not for that tragedy, we might not have known that somewhere in Stockton a little boy raves about a professional fighter career, not paying attention to the fact that going on around him.

“I am the only one who has devoted all his life to fighting. That's why none of these guys can ever speak their mind. They are too worried about what their families, wives and people around them will think, so they are too scared to speak. That's why I dedicated myself to fighting. That's why I'm leaving the way I usually do.
Every fighter has a life on the side. I never had another job. I didn't even finish eighth grade. I could, but I fought too much in high school.
My mom and dad taught me nothing but the ABC. I was transferred from school to school, put on drugs and ridiculed in front of my classmates, because after the violent behavior in the classroom, the teachers always told other children that I behave this way because I forgot to take a sedative.
It's a f**k. You have no idea what it was like. I wanted to kill all my classmates, even the girls who asked, “What is wrong with you? Are you taking medication?"
I had to get permission to stay at the same school, otherwise my mom would lose her house and I would have to move in with my grandparents in Lodi.
Do you know what it's like to move to a nice school in Lodi after being in the Stockton ghetto where only black and Asian kids are in your school? They will try to kick me out of there and put me on drugs. My sixth grade came just in the first year when students were forced to wear uniforms. When I got to high school, there wasn't a single student who was even a bit like me. I got into fights with children from the same school and then I was expelled.
I had a very beautiful girlfriend, her name was Stephanie, and I was very embarrassed that I was poorly dressed and could not afford to buy nice things. Because of this, I often fought, because her ex-boyfriend was a year older and he was the mascot of the football team, and the coaches told all the players that I was troubled and I needed to have a dark one. A lot of them were on steroids, a lot of them were Mexican bandits who were heavily on the meth.
I had only one friend, his name was Bart, he was in my class, but he was also expelled because he got into fights. I tried to study at home, but it didn't interest me much, because by that time I was training to become a professional fighter, and it took up all my time. My friend knew this and started dating Bart to make me jealous. He had a gun and neither of us wanted to piss him off just because he would be walking with her.
On July 5, 2000, Bart threw a party at his house. The night before, Stephanie told me that she loved me. After the party, I was going to go to her house with her brother... He was my best friend... But some of my friends felt bad and went to my house. So I had to go with them.
An hour later I got a call from her mom, she asked: "Are you with Stephanie?". Then she came to my house and picked me up, we drove to Route 99, there was my grandmother's house in the trailer park nearby.
There was an accident on the freeway. I jumped over the fence and saw only one car and ambulances. Stephanie killed herself on the highway. The girl I loved more than anything in the world tried to kill herself for the third time and succeeded.
She was going to go to college. She was a diligent student and did everything I could not do, living in a trailer park and getting high almost every day. Meanwhile, all my high school years, I worried about what she and her friends would think if I lost in a fight with her ex-boyfriend or his boyfriends. I never tried to improve attendance, hanging out with the wrong people, the only thing that mattered to me was becoming a fighter.
I had no money, no car. I would come to her by car and stop her. After that I became an adult. Everything was over. I'm not a child. I won my first fight by choke in the first round, and at that moment I could only think about her, everything was the same as when I was in school.
I would run these seven miles to bring her back from the other world and just promise her that I will become a real fighter, and Stephanie would answer that she knows it and is proud of me.

Life threw Nick Diaz another mine. And most importantly, that he should stand on it for now and not change his leg, deciding that he was fed up with this war and because he had goosebumps in his leg.
