Then he moved to the regional center - Ust-Labinsk, where he graduated from high school No. 2. At the age of 11, he began to earn money. The first place of work in the future of a successful businessman was the factory where his mother worked. There he helped a local locksmith.

Education and military service

In 1986, he went to military service in Transbaikalia - two years in the missile forces were not in vain: he returned home as a senior sergeant.

This was followed by a move to the capital. In 1988, he entered the Lomonosov Moscow State University at the Faculty of Physics, from which he graduated with honors in 1993. Then he began to study at the G. V. Plekhanov Academy of Economics.

He began to export metal abroad, while at home he bought it much cheaper. He spent almost all the proceeds on the shares of the Sayanogorsk aluminum plant.

Already in 1994, he took the post of general director of this enterprise, where he worked until 1997. It was he who initiated the creation of the first vertically integrated industrial organization in Russia - the Siberian Aluminum Group (now - Basic Element). In 2000, it was among the top ten global manufacturers in this area.

From 2000 to 2003, he was the general director of Russian Aluminum, which combined the aluminum and alumina assets of Sibalumin and Sibneft. In 2007, as a result of the merger of these enterprises with similar assets of the Swiss Glencore, the United Company RUSAL was created, which became the leader in its industry. At the same time, Basel Aero appeared, which managed the airports of Krasnodar, Sochi, Gelendzhik, Anapa and Yeysk.

In 2008, RUSAL acquired a blocking stake in MMC Norilsk Nickel and, after all the transactions, became the largest aluminum producer in the world until 2015.

In January 2009, he was again appointed General Director of Basic Element, was involved in the formation and implementation of the development strategy. In November 2014, he led the group as president.

Quotes

On the purpose of his contact with former US President Donald Trump campaign adviser Paul Manafort:

"I am ready to take part in any hearings in the US Congress on this issue in order to defend my reputation and name."

Born on January 2, 1968 in the city of Dzerzhinsk, Gorky Region. Nationality - Belarusian. He graduated from secondary school in Ust-Labinsk, Krasnodar Territory in 1985 with honors. He served in the Strategic Missile Forces in the Trans-Baikal Military District.

In 1993 he graduated from the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University with honors. According to the recollections of one of his fellow students, “he was a very active boy, one of those guys who, even at the university, sensed that they could not wait for a diploma, but start making money right now. First he worked in student construction teams, then he began to actively engage in it was customary to consider in those years speculation. He was very businesslike. He could get something terribly scarce, organize something "(" Profile ", N 43, 1999).

While still studying at Moscow State University from 1990 to 1992, he worked as the financial director of the Military Investment and Insurance Company LLP, where, according to some of his current competitors, he established contacts with the Russian special services, which were very useful to him in the future.

Then Oleg Deripaska continued his activities as a broker on the Russian Commodity Exchange. There he was mainly engaged in the sale of packages of aluminum plants. In parallel, since 1992, he has been the head of CJSC Krasnoyarsk-Alumin-Product, Samara-Alumin-Product. In 1992-1993 - General Director of the company "Rosaluminprodukt" (since 1993 - CJSC "Aluminprodukt").

In 1994, Deripaska, being a shareholder of the Sayan Aluminum Plant (SaAZ), joined the board of directors of this enterprise. In November, he was elected General Director of SaAZ. It was under him in 1994 that SaAZ became the first in the country to pay for electricity entirely and only in "live" money. Subsequently, the Sayan plant became the main enterprise in the transnational FIG Siberian Aluminum, organized and headed by Deripaska since 1997. Today, according to the Accounts Chamber, the position of SaAZ is defined as stable, and the level of solvency and liquidity of the enterprise exceeds the established standards.

In 1996, Oleg Deripaska received a second higher education - he graduated from the Academy of National Economy. G. V. Plekhanova
In 1998, for several tens of millions of dollars, Siberian Aluminum bought out a controlling stake in the Samara Metallurgical Company (SAMEKO) and became its general director.

In April 1999, Oleg Deripaska's group bought out a controlling stake in the Samara aircraft building enterprise Aviakor. Sibirskiy Aluminium has pledged to invest $40 million in the production of An-140 and An-70 aircraft within three years, and participates in the production of the Tu-334.

In addition, O. Deripaska is the founder or head of a number of different CJSCs and LLPs, including: AKTSIA (production and sale of consumer goods, Military Investment and Trade Company LLP, Samara-aluminoprodukt CJSC, Krasnoyarsk-aluminprodukt CJSC ", Ros-aluminprodukt LLP, Kyiv-aluminprodukt CJSC, Spetsmontazhstroy 13 Management CJSC. They registered several dozen offshore companies in Japan, Liechtenstein, Slovakia, Cyprus and the Virgin Islands. Moreover, according to some information, financial the activities of a significant part of offshore companies abroad (not always legal) are managed by Deripaska's mother, constantly being in Paris, where she has an apartment, or in Cyprus.

The main brainchild of Deripaska, the Siberian Aluminum group, according to its press service, is the first vertically integrated company in Russia, which unites a number of leading enterprises of the domestic aluminum complex. They form a complete production and technological cycle - from aluminum smelting to the production of products for its deep processing.

The group, in particular, includes the Sayan aluminum plant, one of the largest and most modern in Russia; Samara Metallurgical Plant, a leading manufacturer of rolled aluminum; the plant "Sayan foil", which produces household foil and flexible packaging based on it. The group also includes the Abakanvagonmash plant, which specializes in the manufacture of large-capacity railway containers and special-purpose cargo platforms, as well as enterprises for the production of aluminum containers, including cans for drinks and canning. The share of enterprises of the group, which is among the top ten world leaders in the production of aluminum and products from it, accounts for 11 percent. of the all-Russian production of primary aluminum, almost half of rolled aluminum and 60 percent. aluminum foil.

The core of the group is made up of enterprises that are part of one of its structural subdivisions - the united company "Siberian Aluminum" (OKSA). These are JSC Sayan Aluminum Plant (producer of primary aluminum), JSC Samara Metallurgical Plant (production of rolled aluminum), JSC Sayan Foil (production of aluminum foil and packaging materials based on it), JSC Rostar (production of aluminum cans for drinks), OAO "DOZAKL" (manufacturing of aluminum canning tape).

In addition, the group includes: plant "Abakanvagonmash"; company "Euromash"; open joint-stock companies "Moscow Non-Ferrous Metals Processing Plant", "Dmitrov Experimental Plant of Aluminum Canning Tape", "Ecoengineering", "Donnefteprodukt", "Molybdenum". The company's total annual revenue exceeds $1 billion.

The President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, Arkady Volsky, hastened to enlist the support of the growing oligarch. Since last year, Oleg Deripaska has become vice-president of this organization.

In management, Oleg Deripaska manifests himself as a tough, sometimes cruel organizer. Having become the general director of SaAZ, he reduced the number of personnel by 2 times, increasing aluminum smelting from 250 to 390 thousand tons per year. In 1999, it was decided to transfer SaAZ to a contract system for hiring workers, but many refused to sign contracts, which, according to the law, they had every right to. Soon, workers who did not sign contracts began to cut wages, which is essentially discrimination.

The Republican branch of the Rostrudinspektsiya in Abakan provided support to the workers and fined the SaAZ director. He did not pay the fine, and then the workers were supported by the republican prosecutor Krutikov. After that, the workers were fired under various pretexts, but the court decided to reinstate them. The case ended with the fact that the prosecutor for some reason abruptly retired, and the principal head of the labor inspectorate, Yakovlev, was demoted.

RTSB founder Konstantin Borovoy recalls: “Deripaska seemed to me a real yuppie. A young professional, an educated manager, owns modern management technologies - this type of people is the same everywhere, I met such people both in Russia and on Wall Street. I remember we discussed the problem of franchising and he spoke very modern thoughts of this American type."

"Gimlet Rule" by Oleg Deripaska

The billionaire, who found himself under sanctions, decided to improve his shaken fortune at the expense of ordinary Russians by increasing electricity tariffs. Whether this will help save the Rusal company or whether the money will go to the dubious entertainment of the oligarch is a big question.

The En+ group, owned by Oleg Deripaska, presented the Russian government with a list of benefits that it would like to receive in the energy market as part of the government's promised support for companies that fell under US sanctions.

Thus, En+ asks to release Rusal, the most affected by the sanctions, from payments under contracts for the supply of capacity, on the one hand, and to increase tariffs for the population not only for electricity, but also for heat and hot water, The Moscow Post correspondent reports.

If at least some of these proposals are supported by the government, Oleg Deripaska will receive tens of billions of rubles. At the same time, there could be a social explosion in Siberia, where the En+-owned electric power company Evrosibenergo operates. But the billionaire himself does not seem to be afraid of such a prospect, according to rumors, he continues to lead a riotous lifestyle, despite problems with his companies.

An offer you should refuse?

After the announcement of new US sanctions, everyone around was just talking about the fact that a billionaire could quickly turn into a millionaire, or even go around the world. Evil tongues even advised Muscovites to keep an eye on the passengers of the metropolitan metro - no matter the hour, the former oligarch, who had already begun to sell off his assets, would be among them. But we must pay tribute to Oleg Deripaska - he found a way to get out of the most difficult situation.

Of course, En+ asks the government for benefits under the plausible pretext of saving Rusal, one of the largest companies in Russia, employing almost a hundred thousand Russians.

"Rusala" consumes up to 30% of the electricity produced in Siberia and getting rid of the company from payments under contracts for the supply of capacity (CDA), according to experts, will save it 13-18 billion rubles. True, in Siberia, this "savings" will lead to an increase in electricity prices by 12%.

At the same time, Rusal itself is asked to be exempted from the price surcharge in order to reduce tariffs in the Far East. On this, Deripaska, who still owns the lion's share of the company's shares, will receive up to 3 billion rubles more. Prices will rise by another 1-2%.

Finally, En+ asks to raise network tariffs for the population. The logic of the representatives of the oligarch is simple - in the Irkutsk region, for example, the lowest energy tariffs - 1.01 rubles. per 1 kWh, while on average in Russia they are 4.3 rubles. for 1 kWh

This will give Rusal an additional 3 billion rubles. At the same time, it is proposed to transfer part of the load of Deripaska's company to all consumers of the Federal Grid Company (FGC) and increase transmission tariffs for other consumers.

Oleg Deripaska found a source of replenishment of his billionth fortune in the pockets of ordinary Russians?

Needless to say, the proposal is striking in its magnitude. So much so that in the government itself, it seems, they were speechless and cautiously declared: the proposals are being considered. But do Rusal really need all these benefits, or are the "dreamers" from Oleg Deripaska's En+ only hiding behind talk about saving the metallurgical holding?

All in debt, as in silks

Having studied the proposals of En +, market participants drew attention to the fact that all these benefits are not so necessary for Rusal, as they say in Oleg Deripaska's entourage. Yes, the company is the second largest supplier of aluminum to the US market after Canada. In 2017, Rusal earned 14.4% of its income ($1.4 billion) in the United States.

Now, against the background of sanctions, the production of aluminum can be reduced by 30%, even by 70%, representatives of Rusal are frightening. And these are not only people left without earnings, not only working at the company's factories, but also at related industries. Needless to say, the prospect may cause discontent in the society more than the increase in electricity tariffs.

But the fact is that when announcing sanctions, the Americans, as they say, did not think about the consequences of this step. And it led to the fact that world prices for aluminum rose sharply. The US Treasury had to soften its position and extend the permission for US residents to work under contracts with Rusal until October 23.

Sanctions against Rusal hit not only the company, but also the US aluminum market

During this time, the US Treasury will assess all the risks and consider the possibility of excluding the company from the sectional lists. Rumor has it that the US Treasury even set a condition - the Americans will continue to work with Rusal if Oleg Deripaska ceases to control the company. After that, Mr. Deripaska decided to reduce his stake to 50% or even lower. And at the same time he left the board of directors of Rusal.

So, according to market analysts, Rusal does not need subsidies through the energy market. On the other hand, En+ has it, which, even before the announcement of the latest sanctions, was mired in debt.

Oleg Deripaska. Biography

According to the company's financial statements, its net debt in 2016 was $5.5 billion. Although some market participants believe that En+ greatly understates its problems and this figure could exceed 13 billion, it is no coincidence that last year the company tried to raise 1.5 billion dollars by listing its shares on the London Stock Exchange. And she even tried to manipulate her potential investors, declaring that the Russian banking system was supposedly flawed. At the same time, market participants said that the "legs" of this statement grow from another place - Deripaska's holding is in debt and Sberbank, VTB, and Gazprombank began to refuse him new loans.

Apparently, Western investors did not believe in Deripaska's stories that the problems of his company are connected with the fact that he cannot find money, not because he is a bad manager, but because the banking system in Russia is flawed. So the billionaire decided to solve his problems at the expense of ordinary Russians.

"Goldfish" oligarch

It is clear that in a crisis the government is forced to choose the lesser of two evils. And belt-tightening Russians might well agree that the prospect of factory closures (which Deripaska's managers insist on) is much worse than tariff hikes. But in the story with the rescue of the oligarch's assets, this is exactly the case when there is no faith in Deripaska.

This is not the first time he demonstrates that the problems of an ordinary Russian are of little concern to him. Everyone remembers the scandal around the billionaire's enterprise in the city of Pikalevo, Leningrad Region, in 2009. There, workers who had not received wages for several months took to the streets and even blocked the federal highway.

Vladimir Putin had to intervene, with whom Oleg Deripaska even had a public quarrel. Then Putin literally forced Deripaska to part with the money by paying the workers wages. Moreover, he publicly humiliated the oligarch, demanded the return of the pen with which he signed the contract.

Apparently, that story did not teach the billionaire anything. Or, on the contrary, he believes that this time, in the name of saving Rusal's factories, the government will agree to unpopular measures. But here's how the authorities will explain these unpopular measures to people whose incomes are already falling against the backdrop of scandals in which Deripaska has recently been featured.

Of course, the billionaire is suing those who cover the details of his fun life. But his claims, most often, come down only to the illegal dissemination of information about his personal life. Recall that private photographs appeared on social networks, depicting Oleg Deripaska, as well as audio recordings of his conversations, from which it was possible to form an idea of the riotous life of the oligarch. It turns out that the billionaire does not deny that he leads just such a lifestyle, he simply does not want everyone to know about it?

The requirement is completely legal. But how does he then have the conscience to get into the pocket of ordinary Russians in order to replenish his already rather big fortune, since, according to rumors, there is enough for parties and escort services? Indeed, everything is as in the saying - who has small pearls, who has stale bread.

Only now the Russians will not understand the government if it supports Deripaska's proposals and raises tariffs. And they will do it right. In the end, Deripaska, in order to save his own business, may change his habits. Sell a yacht, for example. Will survive without sea trips. Much fairer than trying to rob, in fact, the Russians, and even put the region on the brink of a social explosion, adding the power of problems.

Oleg Deripaska - an extraordinary personality, an influential politician and one of the richest people in Russia, was born in the Gorky region, the provincial town of Dzerzhinsk, on 01/02/1968.

Childhood

Oleg's great-grandfathers are Kuban Cossacks, both went through the Second World War and lived on earth all their lives. Children and grandchildren were taught to work and respect for elders. Due to the constant employment of his mother, Oleg Deripaska spent his early childhood with his maternal grandparents in the warm Krasnodar Territory.

The fact is that just a year after the birth of Oleg, his father tragically passed away. Therefore, the mother had to work hard to provide the child with a normal childhood. But the money was still constantly not enough even for the most necessary. Fortunately, his grandparents, with whom he spent most of his time, helped.

In young age

There he not only got stronger physically, but also learned to work early. From a young age, he helped around the house and worked in the garden. And when he was 11, his mother offered him a job during the holidays at the factory. He got a job as a locksmith's assistant and thus received his first tiny salary.

When Oleg grew up, his mother decided to move from the village to the regional center - Ust-Labinsk. There he graduated from high school, without much distinction, but with quite decent grades. Almost immediately he was drafted into the army, for military service. Fate brought the future politician to Transbaikalia, from where he returned matured and matured two years later.

Conquest of the capital

It is difficult to say where the village boy had such ambitions from, but he always wanted to become famous and make good money. Realizing that in the Russian outback, where he comes from, the prospects are minimal, Deripaska decides to study in Moscow, where he goes immediately after the service, in 1988.

Realizing how difficult it will be for him to compete with applicants from the capital, Oleg has been diligently preparing for the entrance exams all year. Perseverance pays off, and he honorably withstands the competition for one of the best universities in the country - Moscow State University. And he chose for himself the most difficult physical faculty.

Already in his student years, which fell on a deep economic and political crisis associated with the collapse of the USSR, he became interested in economics. Realizing that one cannot do without basic knowledge, after receiving a diploma, he continued his education at the Plekhanov Academy in this specialty. And I wasn't wrong. It was business, not physics, that became his real vocation.

Business

He earned his first serious money at that time, while still a second-year student. Together with friends, he founded a small company that exported metal abroad. Everything went under the hammer then, and the price difference was simply huge.

Therefore, in a couple of years, he made the first capital, which he fully invested in the acquisition of shares in an aluminum plant in Slavyanogorsk.

In 1994, after graduating from the university, the young entrepreneur turns out to be one of the main shareholders of the plant. And at the general meeting, a decision is made to appoint him to the post of general director of this huge enterprise. At the same time, on his initiative, a group of enterprises "Siberian Aluminum" was created, uniting the largest plants in this industry.

Just a few years later, in 1999, Oleg was elected to the post of vice president of the recently formed Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. He becomes not only a successful businessman, but also a rather influential political figure. Moreover, a year later he becomes the head of the largest holding Rusal.

Having received another economic education in London, he decides to transform the holding in a European way and establishes the Basic Element company, which brings together successful enterprises in almost all major industries. "Basic element" belong to:

  • aluminum plants;
  • metallurgical plants;
  • airport holding (Sochi, Anapa, Yeysk, etc.);
  • automobile enterprise "GAZ";
  • construction group "Glavmosstroy";
  • insurance company - the leader of the Russian market "Ingosstrakh"
  • and many other smaller factories and plants. And in 2008, Norilsk Nickel also joined Basic Element, which brought the holding to one of the first places in the global industrial market.

Already in the early 2000s, the name of Oleg Deripaska regularly appeared in the Forbes ratings. Moreover, he quickly moved to a leading position. So in 2008 he became the richest Russian and took 6th place in the world ranking.

But due to the outbreak of the crisis, which according to rumors "ate" from 10 to 15 billion dollars, in 2009 Deripaska dropped to second place. As of today, his capital is 2.6 billion dollars. This is only 275th place on the world stage.

The billionaire is engaged in charity work a lot and with pleasure. Back in 1998, he became the founder of the Volnoe Delo private charitable foundation, which finances promising projects designed to improve the environment or the quality of life of Russians.

His areas of interest are science and culture, education, health care, animal protection and environmental protection. Deripaska actively participates in projects organized by the UN. He pays special attention to supporting young talented scientists and entrepreneurs, knowing from his own experience how difficult it is to make his way in today's world.

Under the leadership of Oleg Deripaska, modern shelters for homeless animals are being opened, robotics competitions and early career guidance projects for children are being organized. In Russia today he is one of the most influential, but infamous politicians.

Scandals

The name of Deripaska began to be intensively exaggerated in the press after a sex scandal broke out in early 2018 involving a "hunter for oligarchs", a certain one. The girl announced that she intended to attack another oligarch, Navalny, who, in response to an unauthorized intrusion of a group of half-naked beauties into his office, began to conduct his own investigation.

Navalny's detectives quickly figured out the identity of Nastya, but along the way they dug up a lot of interesting information. Including her connection with Oleg Deripaska and ex-Deputy Prime Minister Prikhodko. And at the same time, the facts of personal correspondence between Deripaska and the head of the elective headquarters of the current American President Donald Trump were revealed.

Nastya only added fuel to the fire, saying in a video message to Russian President Putin that she could tell a lot of interesting things about the participation of influential Russian politicians in the American elections. Because the appeal was made publicly on camera, the scandal gained international publicity. But the president himself has not reacted to it in any way.

Personal life

Before the high-profile sex scandal in which Deripaska was involved, he was considered an exemplary family man. For a long time he was one of the most enviable Russian suitors, whom no one managed to drag down the aisle. But in 2001, at a party at his close friend Roman Abramovich's in London, he met Polina Yumasheva, the daughter of Boris Yeltsin's adviser and personal favorite.

With Polina Yumasheva

By the way, Valentin Yumashev himself, a year and a half later, went down the aisle with Yeltsin's daughter Tatyana. Thus Deripaska became a member of the presidential family. The marriage was considered successful for a long time, two children were born in it.

But in recent years, Polina even wanted to leave her husband, because she was tired of his constant "adventure". However, Tatyana Yeltsina forbade her to divorce officially. Who knows if the current sex scandal will not be the last straw, after which the divorce proceedings will begin.

Oleg Deripaska is the founder and head of Basic Element, a leading Russian investment group with assets in the machine-building, mining and metallurgical, construction, financial, aviation, agro-industrial and other sectors of the economy. Today, over 250,000 people work for Basic Element companies on five continents.

He has a charismatic appearance, his age is a concentration of strength and aspirations, his deeds are similar to the deeds of the great people of the past. But if the ghosts of timelessness have long receded, then Oleg Deripaska amazes so many with his sharp zigzags of thoughts and the fact that he manages to grow grass where others have not plowed the field.

Success Story, Biography of Oleg Deripaska

Oleg Vladimirovich Deripaska was born on January 2, 1968 in the city of Dzerzhinsk, Gorky Region. Deripaska's parents were from the Kuban. From four to nine years old, Oleg lived with his mother's parents, then with his father's parents. At the age of 11, Deripaska moved to his mother in Ust-Labinsk.

Childhood, youth and student years of Oleg Deripaska

On a summer night, a luxury car stopped in front of the building of school No. 2 in Ust-Labinsk. A young man with a short haircut jumped out of it and quickly ran across the floors past stacks of boards and rolls of linoleum, assessing how the work was going. The principal of the school, Valentina Krasyukova, found out about the night watch only in the morning. It was too late to thank the visitor - namely, he paid for the repairs. But by the opening of the school, a sign with the name of the philanthropist appeared next to the honors board - “Oleg Deripaska”.

In Ust-Labinsk (Krasnodar Territory), the owner of "Basic Element" and "Rusal" spent his childhood and youth. Students of School No. 2 are now discussing the biography of Oleg Deripaska, a graduate of 1985, along with the biographies of Peter I, Adolf Hitler and Rupert Murdoch on the classroom clock. When asked what Deripaska's student was remembered for, the teachers answer: "an extraordinary personality", "a leader in the class", "very responsive." Former physics teacher Lyudmila Matrosova assures that on control tests Oleg first helped his comrades solve problems and only then took on his own.

Responsive and kind? There is another opinion. " He was always undiplomatic and made enemies. I often intervened at the last moment to save the situation.”, - says Mikhail Chernoy, a long-term partner of Deripaska. " I trusted Oleg. I had no reason to say: let's see what my condition is. Where, what and how is it registered... ”- says Sergey Popov, who is considered (according to him, completely unreasonably) to be one of the leaders of the Podolsk organized criminal group. Popov also says that he was one of Deripaska's partners, and is unhappy that he is disowning old friends.

It turns out that for some, Deripaska is an unscrupulous, ruthless businessman. For others, a far-sighted businessman with the manners of Harun al-Rashid.

« I suddenly had a terrible desire to read and found that I could swallow a thick book, 300 or 400 pages, in a day or two. … A math textbook I could solve in a week”, - says Deripaska in a presentation according to which the teachers of school No. 2 lead class hours. Oleg graduated from school with a single four in the certificate, for an essay. In physics and mathematics, he was out of competition. " Sometimes he won all regional Olympiads at once in physics, chemistry, mathematics”, - the same materials for class hours say.

In 1984, Deripaska, with two classmates and a teacher, Matrosova, went to Maikop for the regional Olympiad. They lived in the hostel of the pedagogical institute. They cooked semolina porridge, boiled potatoes and sausages in a ladle, which was left by the students who left for the holidays. Deripaska failed to win the regional Olympiad. But the stock of knowledge was enough to enter the physics department of Moscow State University the first time.

« We had several talented guys on the course. They stood out for their speed and structured thinking. Deripaska was one of them", - recalls Deripaska's classmate, businessman Igor Averyanov. A typical example. At one of the senior courses, Deripaska's group passed quantum electrodynamics, half of the group was "carried out" from the exams. Deripaska, who did not attend a single lecture, did not appear for the exam, but then spent several days in the library and, as Averyanov says, “ Went, passed and got my five points».

Deripaska graduated from the Faculty of Physics in 1993, but did not stop studying: he received a second, economic, education at the Academy. GV Plekhanov, attended several courses at the London School of Economics. In the reception room of the owner of "Basel" the visitor is met today by a whole library. Self-improvement and self-education- the skate of Oleg Deripaska.

Non-ferrous metals instead of physics

Perseverance Deripaska differed from childhood. He grew up without a father who died when the boy was only a year old. The ability to absorb huge amounts of information, honed at the physics department, came in handy in the future. In 1994, Deripaska, at the age of 26, became the general director of the Sayanogorsk aluminum smelter (a little further on the circumstances of his appointment). The first months he sat in his office day and night. I went with red eyes from lack of sleep, but unlike many other new owners, I learned the technology of aluminum production by heart. Even earlier, in the early nineties, Deripaska managed to impress Konstantin Borovoy, the founder of the Russian Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange (RTSB), with his business knowledge. " We discussed the problem of franchising, and heexpressedvery modern thoughts”, Borovoy recalls.

The main subject that Deripaska is focused on today is business development strategy. " Knows how to count, understands different schemes. Very receptive to new things”, - Yuri Shleifshtein speaks about him. In the late nineties, Shleifshtein owned about a quarter of the shares of the Bratsk Aluminum Plant (BrAZ). This businessman has no particular reason to love Deripaska: when the current aluminum tycoon created Rusal, shareholders who sat comfortably on BrAZ had to sell their shares. " Very analytical mind decision making process does not take much time”, Gennady Sirazutdinov, the former director of the Sayanogorsk plant (SaAZ), echoes Shleifstein, who does not need to praise Deripaska at all: Sirazutdinov was forced to give him his director's chair, after which he went abroad out of harm's way. Times were difficult then.

In the era of the primitive accumulation of capital, it was important to choose the right patrons. The first guide of Oleg Deripaska to big business was Mikhail Chernoy.

Capture of the first factory

« I met Oleg in London in 1993 at the annual conference on metals, - recalls Chernoy. - He tried to buy vouchers, play on the stock exchange within a million dollars, trade non-ferrous scrap". Today, Chernoy lives in a luxurious villa in the suburbs of Tel Aviv. His business is going smoothly - a couple of telecommunications companies, minority stakes in IT firms. Meanwhile, 15 years ago, this man was one of those who ran almost all of the ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy of the former USSR.

After the collapse of the centralized economy, the former giants of Soviet industry found themselves at the mercy of a structure called the Trans World Group (TWG). TWG supplied raw materials to factories and took away finished products, paying only for processing services. If not for tolling (that was the name of the scheme used by TWG), then in 1994 the export earnings of aluminum plants would have exceeded $3.3 billion. Russia was ruled by the brothers Lev and Mikhail Cherny, "guild members" from Tashkent, who moved to Moscow in the late 1980s. The overseas part of the business was overseen by London traders Simon and David Reuben. The organization was headed by Lev Chernoy, who was responsible for relations with officials and for working with factories, Mikhail, according to him, had a 25% share in all the income of the group.

Deripaska in 1993 owned several trading companies and a place on the Borovoye RTSB. " Alex Krasner, Vice President of AIOC(a structure similar to TWG, but much inferior to it in terms of business scope), somehow refused Deripaska a loan for a million dollars, because he did not know this guy and did not trust him", - recalls Chernoy. Chernoy was then looking for a dynamic manager for his aluminum business: the company wanted to control not only exports, but also metal production. And the young trader Deripaska was full of ambition - Chernoy saw himself in him in his youth. " I made friends with Oleg, - recalls Chernoy. - I invited him to my place in Paris, took him to restaurants. Showed a beautiful life". Together with Oleg Deripaska Chernoy, he flew to the USA (today both of them are banned from entering the States), introduced him into his circle. The young metal trader, already as a partner of Chernoy and TWG, began buying shares from workers and other shareholders of SaAZ.

According to another version, which is presented by two serious players in the aluminum market of the 1990s, Deripaska came to Cherny with a proposal for cooperation, having already bought about 10% of SaAZ shares.

Be that as it may, by November 1994, the structures of TWG and Deripaska's company had amassed a sufficient stake in SaAZ for decision-making at a shareholders' meeting. Deripaska was not the only candidate, but he proved to be the most persistent. " . TWG wanted to nominate their own candidate. But I arranged the appointment of Oleg", - says Chernoy. And he admits: the protege sensibly ordered a ticket to big business. " I left him connections, and he successfully developed them. And he was also introduced to the family he became a member of by people from our business group”, - Chernoy drops meaningfully.

Marriage to Yeltsin's "granddaughter"

In 2001, in the midst of setting up his giant aluminum holding, Deripaska married Polina Yumasheva, daughter of Valentin Yumashev. This former journalist was one of the most influential figures in Russian politics in the late 1990s. Having started his career take-off by writing Yeltsin's memoirs, he became friends with the youngest daughter of President Yeltsin, Tatyana Dyachenko (later became her husband), and after the 1996 elections, he headed the presidential administration of the Russian Federation for some time.

Detractors call the marriage of Deripaska and Yumasheva dynastic. Like, with his help, Yeltsin's entourage legalized their fortune. " This is some kind of nonsense, I remember the relationship between Oleg and Polina at the very beginning of our acquaintance. They were quite sincere. They got married when Oleg was an accomplished businessman. They have two children. And I know that Oleg pays gigantic attention to this."- one of Yumashev's close acquaintances comments on the first version.

By the time of his marriage, Deripaska had managed to build bridges with the new Kremlin administration. According to a former Rusal employee, in 2001 Vladimir Putin visited Deripaska's estate in a picturesque corner of Khakassia, on waterfalls, a few kilometers from Sayanogorsk (Dyachenko and Yumashev had been there many times before Putin). Since then, Deripaska has repeatedly visited Putin in the Kremlin. The content of their conversations can only be guessed at, but the fact remains that Deripaska quickly accepted the new rules of the game.

Deripaska has no conscience, his enemies say. " Doesn't keep his word”, - speaks about his former protégé Chernoy. The co-owners of the lumber company Ilim Pulp, which Deripaska fought for control of in the early 2000s, confirm that gentlemen's agreements are not the most reliable way to resolve relations with an aggressive billionaire.

But it can be said differently: Chernoy himself is to blame for letting the metallurgical empire slip out of his hands. Since 1994, this businessman has ceased to appear in Russia, where the aluminum wars flared up. His brother Leo visited Moscow on short trips, permanently residing in London. Deripaska, Iskander Makhmudov (now the owner of UMMC and Kuzbassrazrezugol), Vladimir Lisin (the owner of the Novolipetsk Iron and Steel Works) and Vladimir Rashnikov (the main owner of Magnitogorsk) ran the affairs of the TWG locally. In the metallurgical get-together they were called barons. All of them were ambitious people, and there was only one way to realize their ambitions - by gaining control over the enterprises that they patronized in the interests of the Blacks and Rubens.

Fermentation has begun in TWG. " Oleg Deripaska and Mikhail Chernoy began to actively develop the idea that there was no more positive from the Rubens”, recalls Dmitry Bosov, former manager of the Russian office of TWG. Leo did not refuse partnership with the Rubens. There was a split between the Blacks, TWG assets were divided.

War with partners

By 1999, a war broke out between the two parts of the once united empire. The share of Lev and the Ruben brothers in SaAZ was diluted in favor of Deripaska and Mikhail. The structures controlled by the latter "Siberian Aluminum" ("Sibal" in 1998 called the industrial holding formed around SaAZ) bought 6.15% of the plant's shares from the state and brought their stake to 75%.

Still “banned from entering”, Mikhail Chernoy did not interfere in management. " I did not keep routine information about the details of the business, transactions were based on a simple handshake. I transferred all the cases to Makhmudov and Deripaska”- this is how in December 2007 he described in his testimony to the London court his style of doing business in Russia.

It is not surprising that Mikhail Cherny in Russia gradually began to be forgotten. But Deripaska becomes a public figure. In the spring of 1999, Kommersant published his lengthy discourses on industrial policy. Around the same time, Oleg Deripaska first came to the head of the presidential administration, Alexander Voloshin, to criticize the tolling schemes in the aluminum industry, which were then strongly associated with Lev Cherny's company. Deripaska reported to Voloshin about the losses incurred by the country's budget. In the autumn of the same year, the streets of Moscow were full of posters - “Stop robbing Russia. Prohibit tolling."

The attack was successful. " The lion was very worried. He decided that it was necessary to sell, otherwise you would be left without everything.", - recalls Bosov. It wasn't just the billboards. Deripaska and Mikhail Chernoy established control over the Nikolaev Alumina Refinery (Ukraine). Sibal's ally, Alfa Group, was approaching the Achinsk alumina refinery. TWG plants lacked raw materials to operate at full capacity. If production starts to fall, Lev Chernoy reasoned, Deripaska, using his connections in the Kremlin, will be able to seize control of them. Negotiations began on the sale of 30% of the shares of the Bratsk Aluminum Plant and about 40% of Krasnoyarsk, which belonged to Lev and the Rubens. But, to the dismay of Deripaska and Mikhail Cherny, these stakes were sold not to them, but to Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich, businessmen who also enjoyed the patronage of Dyachenko and Yumashev. Deripaska's first reaction was to continue the war.

« Oleg concentrated great forces. Set up "traps". Launched a campaign against tolling. And the game, instead of falling into a trap, threw a stone into the trap and fled”, - describes the situation Shleifshtein, who at that time was the chairman of the board of directors of BrAZ, and later sold his stake to the shareholders of Sibneft.

However, there was no war between Oleg Deripaska and Abramovich. Former Rusal employees say that the two young businessmen met in the winter of 2000. Contacts were also established between their subordinates, and soon the creation of Rusal, a company that unites all aluminum plants, was announced. Four years later, Abramovich, who got rid of Berezovsky, who had fallen into disgrace, sold Deripaska a stake in Rusal for $1.6 billion. But Deripaska did not stop there: in 2007, his company absorbed the last competitor on the Russian aluminum market, SUAL Holding » Viktor Vekselberg, and the alumina refineries of the Swiss trader Glencore. As a result of the transaction, the world's largest aluminum producer UC Rusal was formed.

Like Abramovich, who instantly forgot about Berezovsky, Deripaska also needed to “clean up” the past. The "divorce" with Mikhail Cherny turned out to be dramatic. Here is what Black says. The key meeting between the former mentor and Deripaska took place in March 2001 at The Lanesborough Hotel in London. Deripaska spoke about the creation of Rusal. Chernoy asked a question about dividends, and, according to him, Deripaska answered this: before talking about dividends, it is necessary to agree that no one sells his stake "to the side." Like, according to Deripaska, Chernoy was negotiating with Viktor Vekselberg on the assignment of his stake in Sibal and Rusal. The partner hastened to assure him that this was not true, but immediately asked Deripaska if he himself was ready to buy out his share? Deripaska allegedly said that he was considering such a possibility and offered to draw up an appropriate agreement. Chernoy agreed, and they sketched out a draft agreement on a laptop. Its essence is that Chernoy receives a $250 million advance, and then, over a period of three to five years, the cost of the remaining 20% of Rusal (based on the price of recent transactions) minus the advance.

The advance was received, but when Rusal launched a merger with SUAL and Glencore, Chernoy demanded that the former partner pay off - according to his calculations, the compensation should have been $ 3 billion. However, Deripaska did not meet with the former patron and satisfy his demands. Black sued.

« Thousands of people knew about our partnership with him”, - the Israeli businessman is now indignant. However, in the materials that Chernoy submitted to the London court, Deripaska's signature is on only one document relating to the distribution of shares in Rusal - the very draft drawn up in the hotel, which contains numerous typos. Deripaska does not comment on Chernoy's statements.

The army helped to survive in the battles of aluminum

Nerves of steel and rigidity - without these qualities, it was impossible to survive in the Russian aluminum business. At least in the 1990s. " I was intimidated. I sold everything. Rather than lie in a coffin with money, I preferred to live with my wife and children", - Sam Kislin, the founder of Trans Commodities (later TWG grew out of it), recalls, lighting a cigar in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton hotel on Tverskaya. Kislin, who emigrated to the United States from Odessa, became for Cherny in the late 1980s a guide to the world - through him the first export deals of Soviet metallurgical plants were turned.

Emigrant Kislin, who left the case, can be understood - it is enough to list the names of those who died in the aluminum wars. In the fall of 1995, on the 107th km of the Volokolamsk highway, the body of Felix Lvov, the head and main owner of the AIOC company, which competed with TWG, was found in a pile of garbage. In the summer of the same year, in the village of Snegiri near Moscow, Oleg Kantor, president of Yugorsky Bank, a partner of Lvov, was stabbed to death. In Krasnoyarsk, dozens of gangsters and businessmen were killed in the struggle of groups for control over local enterprises of the aluminum industry. Anatoly Bykov won. The struggle for SaAZ was also accompanied by human casualties. The former participant of school physics competitions had to gain authority in a very aggressive environment.

For Deripaska, things could have turned out differently if not for military service. Already after the first semester at the university, it became clear that Deripaska's course was going to serve. In May 1986 he was called up. " Slender boys left, mature men returned, a little wild, really”, - testifies a graduate of the physics department Averyanov. Many MSU students were not sent to elite units. Deripaska, after the school of sergeants, ended up in the auxiliary unit of the strategic missile forces on the border with China. Under the command of 102 people, 95 of them from Central Asia. The future billionaire drilled them on the parade ground. According to eyewitnesses, there was progress. " Army is a test of survival”, Deripaska later summed up.

But even with such a school, he did not immediately learn to impress counterparties. The general director of SaAZ, Sirazutdinov, did not take Deripaska seriously at first. " The secretary said that some shareholder was waiting for me. A boy came in and started to offer something”, - says the former head of SaAZ. The director, whose head was spinning even without shareholders, sent Deripaska away. Less than six months later, the “boy” occupied his office, and Sirazutdinov left for Argentina for four years. Krasnoyarsk journalist Alexei Tarasov, who then worked as a special correspondent for Izvestia, says that after the meeting of SaAZ shareholders, which approved Deripaska in office, Sirazutdinov was frightened by something and even asked Tarasov to destroy the records of his previous interviews.

The situation in Sayanogorsk was indeed combative. Deripaska spent the night at the enterprise, not only because he studied the documents. It was dangerous to go out into the city - Vladimir Tatarenkov (better known under the nickname Tatarin) laid eyes on the plant, who saw a completely different person in the director's chair. In 1995 Tatarin almost killed Deripaska. The car, in which the director of SaAZ, together with Bosov and Lisin, was driving from Sayanogorsk to Achinsk for a meeting of shareholders of an alumina refinery, grenade launchers were waiting on the road. The future participants of the Golden Hundred were saved by a miracle: at the last moment, Bykov found out about the ambush (as Bosov says from his words) and allegedly ordered everything to be canceled. The Tatar was forced to submit.

Enemies Trampled

Luck alone was not enough. It was said that behind Cherny and Oleg Deripaska looms the shadow of people no less formidable than Tatarin. In 2000, Jalol Khaidarov, who worked for Chernykh and Iskander Makhmudov, wrote in a statement of claim to one of the district courts in New York that Anton Malevsky, the leader of the Izmailovo organized criminal group, was responsible for the safety of Cherny's business. Chernoy's testimony to British justice claims that in the late 1990s, Malevsky was the beneficiary of 10% of Sibal. In 2001, Malevsky crashed while skydiving in South Africa. Deripaska has always denied that he had anything in common with this man.

Sergey Popov calls himself another beneficiary of Sibal with a 10% share. He repeatedly showed reporters papers in which he appears as Deripaska's partner in the aluminum business. In 1990, Popov was sentenced to three years in prison on charges of extortion, which gave rise to classify him as an organized crime. In 1998, the racketeering case was sent for review, and Popov's court fully acquitted "for lack of a crime event." He insists that even today he has the rights to 10% in all Basic Element's businesses. Why, then, is Deripaska the only official owner of Bazel? " Oleg asked us: when I am alone, it is easier for me to negotiate with everyone. And behind you and Anton Malevsky, a trail of terrible rumors stretches Popov says. - It was logical. We said ok, we'll "hide" as you say».

The owner of "Rusal" stands on the fact that he put an end to the theft at SaAZ, supporting the local police, who zealously took up the fight against crime, and went on the offensive against Tatarenkov. During a search of the latter's apartment, a whole arsenal was discovered. The authority fled and was put on the wanted list. And in 1999, he was arrested in Greece and sentenced to 14 years in prison for possession of weapons.

In addition to Tatarin, Deripaska was annoyed by local authorities, but for the time being. His main opponent is the mayor of Sayanogorsk Sergey Bondarenko. Bondarenko's wife says that her husband does not want to stir up the past: “ We've suffered enough". Veniamin Striga, Bondarenko's closest associate, head of a local TV channel and at one time representative of the President of the Russian Federation in Khakassia, was forced to go abroad. " They tried to kidnap and kill my client", - said the lawyer Striga Yuri Orekhov, -" Deripaska's group will not give a chance to a civilized court". It was Striga who launched into wide circulation the story about how Deripaska, for the first time in his days as director, walked around the SaAZ shops in sweatpants with outstretched knees and identified points of sale of alcohol. Attacks from Striga greatly irritated Deripaska, one of the Rusal employees recalls.

In 2003, Striga, who moved to Moscow, published on his website another accusatory article about the aluminum magnate, after which the Khakass police opened a criminal case against the author. The Khakass OMON unit, which arrived in the capital to arrest Striga, left with nothing: Deripaska's personal enemy had left the country by that time. " Deripaska has the mentality of a fighter, it is pointless to fight with such people, you can only negotiate with them", - sums up Averyanov.

Ruthless to his enemies, Deripaska does not go easy on his subordinates either. Former employees of Basic Element say that until recently, top managers went to meetings with O. V. D. (the chief is usually called by initials) with a dictaphone. Slightly tilting his head and looking frowningly, Deripaska speaks quickly and quietly, it is not customary to interrupt and ask clarifying questions. He delves into all the details and at any time can check how his instructions are carried out. In Rusal, they talk about the shortest career in the company: one of the secretaries, having gone to work at nine o'clock on the first day, was unable to complete some assignment and was fired at eleven in the morning.

The owner of "Basel" does not spare himself. " In his office, next to the study, there is another one where, roughly speaking, he lives. There is a bed", - says Averyanov. Deripaska's lifestyle is a constant expansion. Of the Russian corporations in terms of business growth, only the state-owned Rosneft, patronized by Putin's friend Igor Sechin, can compete with Bazel in terms of business growth.

Sentimental Oleg Deripaska

« Few people know that Deripaska has a house in Japan. He spends a lot of time there, is fond of Eastern philosophy”, - says one of Deripaska's former partners in the aluminum business. In the Serafimo-Diveevsky Monastery in the Nizhny Novgorod region, you can be told how Oleg Deripaska, who often visits the monastery, restored one of the buildings at his own expense, organized a private hotel and restaurant there, and then donated everything to the monastery.

Deripaska also has a weakness - he is sentimental. " He invited his best friends to his company, - says Anna Zozulya, a chemistry teacher, looking at a group photo of 1985 graduates. - Yura Rogov works in his representative office in Germany. He also offered Lesha Savchenko, but he refused to move to Moscow for family reasons". Once every five years, Deripaska arranges a meeting of classmates. For those who live abroad, they pay for the flight to Moscow and back. The last time the 1993 Physics Department graduates gathered in January was at the Forum Hall, not far from the Paveletsky railway station. Deripaska was two hours late, but then spent several hours with his classmates, moving the banquet tables, in the room for smoking hookahs. The son of a professor who taught at the physics department, Deripaska paid for treatment and rehabilitation after a head injury from his own funds.

Oleg Deripaska is the founder of the Volnoe Delo charitable foundation - “ We follow the good traditions of Russian charity, supporting domestic science and education, contributing to the solution of significant social problems, the revival of spiritual values and the preservation of Russia's invaluable cultural and historical heritage. In today's world to achievesuccessthese areas require innovative and more efficient approaches. The development and implementation of such programs is a priority for the Fund. They allow to achieve a long-term and sustainable positive effect, bring real benefits to individuals and the whole society, create the basis for the prosperity of future generations.»

This year, in addition to the regular tranche, he transferred 400,000 rubles to the Ust-Labinsk school: there is bad water in the city, the money will be used to pay for the services of a dentist for teachers. But Deripaska does not like to listen to gratitude. The last time Lyudmila Matrosova, who taught physics to Deripaska, spoke heart to heart with her student in 1988, when he returned from the army. They sat for two hours. Deripaska talked about his plans. He was going to do science.

Assessment of the state of Oleg Deripaska
