Dream interpretation of dreams according to Freud online. Freud: interpretation of dreams. "The Interpretation of Dreams" - a dream is not nonsense at all, but a distortion

"Suppressing your own desires,
we experience them in a dream"
“The interpretation of dreams is the royal road
to the knowledge of the unconscious in mental life"
Z. Freud

If an apple fell on Newton's head when discovering the law of attraction, then the famous Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud received the essence of the theory of dream interpretation on a warm summer evening in 1895 on the terrace of a Viennese restaurant. The scientist considered a significant discovery the idea that sleep is a cipher to understand the hidden desires of a person. Dr. Freud was actively interested in the cause and meaning of dreams, discussed their dreams with patients and tried to interpret them with the help of psychoanalysis. His research was collected in the extensive work The Interpretation of Dreams. The book was published in 1900 and was edited and supplemented several times.

To the question what lies behind dreams, the scientist answered very clearly: our desires. Yes, yes, precisely desires, starting from the moment of birth. People are subject aggressive and sexual instincts and desire to have fun. Society forces from childhood to suppress aggression and sexual impulses in oneself, to control one's desires. But during sleep, these feelings are no longer controlled, and all our subconscious desires emerge from the depths into a dream.

Dream- the result of the struggle of two opposites: consciousness and the unconscious. In our dreams, events can flow smoothly from an impression from what we saw during the day to a hidden mental complex from childhood.

There are a large number of dreams that are similar in sensations and actions in many people. Prior to Freud's research, it was believed that such dreams were the result of physical stimuli. For example, a dream where the sleeper sees himself naked is the result of a thrown blanket, a dream about flying is the result of irritation from the movement of the lungs. Studying and analyzing the dreams of his patients, Sigmund came up with a different explanation for the same dreams. He found that the primary source of the formation of similar dreams is the same for everyone. What will typical dreams according to Freud tell about?

Samples of typical dreams

Sample 1. you find yourself naked in front of the people around. You are ashamed and embarrassed, although people do not pay attention to this and do not point fingers at you. However, you tend to hide in a secluded place or cover your nakedness. At the heart of such dreams are memories from early childhood (up to 4 years of age), when you were not ashamed to walk around the house naked. Such a childhood is a kind of paradise (the first people also did not know shame and freely walked naked) and the dream takes the sleeping person into it. However, a person ceases to belong to himself and becomes an object for observation - after all, there are many people around.

Sample #2. you see in a dream death of loved ones: parents, children, brothers or sister, loved ones. The attitude to what they see is divided into two types: some dreamers indifferently observe this fact, the rest are very worried and can wake up in tears.

The first type is not considered by Freud as a typical dream, since it may be based on various disguised desires. About the second type, the psychoanalyst says with confidence that this is a consequence of a secret desire for death to a loved one.

Anticipating cries of indignation, Freud explains that this desire can be long forgotten and ousted from our memory. As an example, he cites the childhood jealousy of the firstborn in relation to newborn brothers or sisters. The child may show aggression towards a new family member and sincerely wish that he left their home. And in early childhood, the concepts of "death" and "care" are replaced by each other. To die for a child means to leave and not interfere with the rest. Therefore, such dreams do not mean that you wish your loved ones to die at the moment. The fact that once, even for a split second, a similar thought flashed through your head pops up in them.

The question immediately arises: If the wish for death on siblings is related to the rivalry for attention in childhood, then how can one explain the death of parents in a dream? Did we ever wish death to people so sincerely loving us? As an answer, the Austrian psychologist cites the assertion that girls see in their mothers, and boys in their fathers, rivals of their love for a parent of the opposite sex. This desire is also associated with the earliest childhood. Consider one of the examples that Freud gave in The Interpretation of Dreams.

Every time the father goes on a business trip, the little boy sleeps with his mother. But when dad returns, he has to go to his bed. Naturally, the child will have a desire for his father to leave (remember the connection between children's concepts of “departure-death”) and not prevent him from being in bed with his beloved mother.

Summing up, the psychiatrist emphasizes that these dreams are a repressed desire without censorship, which can be superimposed by daytime worries and thoughts about loved ones.

It is noteworthy that all Freud's patients at least once saw stories about death.

Sample number 3. Everyone has dreamed at least once exams. Experiences, failure, an unlearned ticket, leaving for the second year - all these elements of a dream are nothing more than childhood fears and memories of punishments for misconduct.

Parents, educators and teachers formed in us a sense of responsibility for our actions, the connection between misconduct and punishment. We know that now we will not be punished, as in childhood, but every time we face a responsible task, we feel the same uncertainty and fear. The meaning of dreams about exams is a kind of encouragement, consolation and reassurance of ourselves before a responsible act. The subconscious, as it were, says to the dreamer: “Remember how you were afraid of the exam and still passed it! So tomorrow everything will work out!

To the same group of typical dreams, Freud includes night visions of late for the train. He considers departure a symbol of death, and the dream itself is a consolation - "do not be afraid, you will not leave (you will not die)".

Sample No. 4. Flights and falls in a dream. According to the research of a psychoanalyst, the sensations of floating in the air appear in our dreams thanks to children's games with adults. Remember how often parents throw a laughing child up, circle him by the arms around the room, pretend to fall, swing him on a swing. Dizziness and slight fear that children experience is replaced by a feeling of joy and pleasure.

It happens that during such games the child may experience sexual sensations. One of Freud's patients spoke of a voluptuous feeling experienced when swinging on a swing. Our subconscious mind reproduces these sensations and childhood impressions in dreams about flights and falls.

Sample number 5. Dreams with feeling fear when swimming in water or walking (crawling) along a narrow street or passage. They are based on memories of being in the womb and childbirth. These memories carry an unconscious belief in life after death (similar to the unknown life after birth from the womb).

Symbols in dreams

Working with one of his early followers, Wilhelm Stekel, and studying typical dreams, Freud came to the conclusion that great attention should be paid to symbols when interpreting dreams. Symbols- these are the hidden elements of a dream, they carry the same meaning for all people. They can be found not only in dreams, but also in literary works, legends and myths, and ordinary speech.

In his work "The Interpretation of Dreams", the scientist explains the meaning of some symbols:
King and queen- the father and mother of the sleeping
prince or princess- sleeping himself
house- the human body
oblong objects (sticks, canes, umbrellas, trees) and sharp objects (knives, pikes, daggers)- male genitalia
boxes, cabinets, crates, caves- female genitalia
climbing and descending stairs- sexual intercourse
complex mechanisms and devices, as well as natural landscapes- sexual organs
water and everything related to it- birth

Based on the interpretation of dream symbols, a common on the Internet was compiled dream book according to Freud. It is not by chance that it is called erotic, because the Austrian psychiatrist considered most of the symbols of dreams as a manifestation of the sexual instinct. Using Freud's dream book, one should not forget that in addition to symbols, the emotions that you experienced in dreams play an important role in interpreting sleep.

Sigmund Freud (full name Sigismund Shlomo Freud) was born on May 6, 1856. A well-known psychologist, psychiatrist and neurologist, his contribution to the development of psychological science is difficult to overestimate. Freud is the founder, a kind of progenitor, of the psychoanalytic school of therapeutic direction.

Sigmund was born into a Jewish family in the south of Moravia (Czech Republic), and when he was not even four years old, the family moved to Vienna. He was the third child of his father, who married for the third time, already having two children from a previous marriage. At the age of 17, Freud graduated with honors from the gymnasium. His ambitions were full of hopes to achieve a high position in the military or political structure, however, the anti-Semitic attitude and the weak material base of his family did not allow him to realize himself in the public sector. So Freud became a medical student at the University of Vienna, which he successfully graduated in 1881, and, having received a doctorate in medicine, began to practice at the Institute of Anatomy.

At the age of 30, Freud married Martha Bernays, the granddaughter of the Chief Rabbi of Hamburg, who later bore him 6 children.

At an advanced age, at 82, after the Anschluss of Austria and Germany, due to Nazi persecution of Jews, Freud was forced to leave the country. The authorities did not want to let him go, and only because a very large ransom was paid to the government, and also thanks to the help of Freud's patient, Princess Marie Bonaparte of Denmark, who helped Freud's family to leave the Third Reich without hindrance, he survived.

But already in 1939, suffering from unbearable pain due to oral cancer caused by smoking, Freud asked his friend, doctor Max Schur, to perform euthanasia, which, interestingly, at that time was not considered such a humane-negative act, and even had some popularity. Freud died on September 23 from a triple dose of morphine at the age of 83.

Life work

Freud first looked at dreams as a logically built series of encrypted messages from the subconscious. He publicly stated that the understanding of dreams not as unconscious meaningless flashes of images in a tired brain, but as an unconscious, but highly analyzable work of the brain, will bear fruit when a person begins to know himself through the analysis of his dreams. This was an unheard of statement, because in the entire history of mankind only priests, magicians and soothsayers tried to interpret dreams.

Freud was engaged in the analysis of dreams all his life, he conducted many years of research containing the deepest analyzes of the dreams of thousands of people. These were not only the dreams of sick people, Sigmund's patients, he also paid special attention to the analysis of dreams in the circle of family, friends, acquaintances, with whom he carried out a detailed analysis together.

Biography of Freud's dream book

Freud's book "The Interpretation of Dreams" is a world treasure, not being a scientific manual, but not a work of art, however, it brought a lot to science, and no less "lovers" to delve into themselves. It was finalized and published 6 times throughout the life of the great Freud, each time endowed with more in-depth knowledge in the then unexplored field of dreams.

Freud's dream book itself is, in a way, a modern simplified edition of his book. The book contains not only a description of people's dreams and a psychological analysis of Freud, in it he describes his entire theory, how and what led him to such a conclusion, while the dream book only interprets individual symbols from the described dreams. This is very convenient, because now, in order to look inside yourself and find out your secret desires, you just need to look into Freud's dream book and find out the interpretation of sleep.

misunderstood genius

Many believe, and often positioned, that Freud's dream book is intimate or love, and such a dream book is based on the belief that Freud interpreted dreams only from the position of sex. If in Freud's psychoanalysis the theme of hidden desires is present in a large segment, then, not only did he also mean physiological desires, he reveals the theme of unfulfilled desires in its entirety, without referring everything “below the belt”. The cliché of “a sexually anxious genius who sees everything only from the position of animal instincts”, set more than a century ago, does not justify itself in the modern world, which has seen both the sexual revolution and the struggle for the equality of sexual minorities.

Freud was simply, like many great men, ahead of his time. He wrote openly about sex, directly raised “indecent” topics in conversations with patients, but he talked about a part of everyday life, that this is an equally important area in life. But he was misunderstood by many contemporaries, scolded by critics, but no one did more than he did for psychological science and for psychoanalysis as a whole. He gave food for further work, and, perhaps, he was mistaken in something, in view of the fact that he was a pioneer - he studied the human essence thoroughly, helping others to find their lost self.

SIGMUND FREUD (1856-1939), Austrian neuropathologist, psychiatrist and psychologist, great innovator, founder of psychoanalysis.

His early works are devoted to the localization of brain functions, problems of physiology and anatomy of the brain. He dealt with the problem of infantile paralysis, in 1884 he was the first to discover the analgesic effect of cocaine. Since 1895, he developed methods for the treatment of neuroses, in particular hysteria. He was one of the first to study the psychological aspects of the development of sexuality. In 1900, he put forward a hypothesis about the structure of the mental apparatus as an energy system, the dynamics of which is based on the conflict between different levels of the psyche, primarily between consciousness and unconscious attraction.

Interpretation of dreams according to Freud's dream book

In our interpreter you will find Freud's dream book for interpreting dreams and interpreting dreams from a great psychotherapist.

Freud's principles of dream interpretation

Freud said of himself that he belongs to the sort of people who, in Hebbel's words, disturbed the peace of the world. His work radically changed the face of the psychology of the 20th century, highlighting the fundamental issues of the structure of personality. They revealed the nature of conflicts between passions and a sense of duty, revealed the causes of spiritual discomfort and the illusory nature of a person's ideas about himself.

Freud thought about dreams a lot and in depth. In the book The Interpretation of Dreams, published in 1900, he carefully analyzes the mechanisms that give rise to them and the role they play in human life.

The main thesis of the scientist is clear: a dream is a product of our mental activity, an expression of unfulfilled and sometimes unconscious needs that we can satisfy in a dream thanks to the efforts of our own imagination and thus gain peace of mind.

However, according to Freud, the true emotional experiences of the sleeper, or the content of sleep, are expressed only in symbolic and at first glance absurd images - the so-called production of sleep, which is nothing more than a trick of the subconscious, seeking to deceive the internal censor - the mind and give vent to passions. which are prohibited. Thus, the symbols of dreams are a code of a person's hidden desires. The more significant this or that experience is for a person, the more fantastic it acquires in a dream. To reveal the secret meaning of sleep, Freud believed, is possible only with the help of psychoanalysis.

The main types of dreams according to Freud

Freud identifies three types of dreams.

Firstly, dreams are quite meaningful, understandable, that is, they do not cause any difficulties in interpreting them.

Secondly, dreams are logical to a certain extent, but strange: it is difficult to connect their meaning with what is happening in reality.

And finally, dreams are incoherent and confused, which are generally impossible to understand. The latter require special attention, since, if properly interpreted, they can become a source of very important information for the dreamer about his life and about himself.

Freud's dream books published to date are a list of recurring symbols from the world of dreams that Freud himself describes and interprets in his works. The task of such dream books is to acquaint the reader with the practical side of the teachings of the Austrian psychiatrist. Examples of the interpretation of dreams according to Freud are presented in our collection of 55 dream books, although, of course, not in full.

Stages of interpreting dreams in Freud's dream book

Freud breaks down the censorship process we call "dream work" into several stages:

secondary process,

condensation,

moving

and projection.

By observing how and what you control during your dreams, you can learn a lot about your true desires and urges (if his theory is to be believed). Let's see what each stage of dream work is like.

Secondary process in the interpretation of sleep according to Freud

This is the way in which we manage to create a coherent story from our dream, even if it is strange and incoherent.

Think of it this way: suppose you were assigned an episode of Seinfeld and told that there should be characters such as Elaine on a unicycle with a kitten in her hair and a pagoda under her arm, your university liberal arts professor in the form of Kramer, Jerry establishing Library of Congress, and George with a pie that has a picture of Janet Renault on it.

Your attempts to make sense of it all are like a secondary process with a story that includes all of these elements. But in doing its job, it masks the primary content of your dream.

The meaning that he extracts from all these disparate parts - the dream we had - is called "manifest content." Freud was convinced that you must unravel the explicit content of your dream and find the hidden meaning or "hidden content" of the dream in it.

The stage of condensation in the interpretation of sleep according to Freud

Condensation is the ability to create one brief thought from a series of thoughts hidden in dreams. The eminent psychoanalyst and writer Charles Rycroft argues that when condensed, the individual details of our dreams symbolize several themes. Two or more images may represent a mixed image, the meaning of which is related to each of the individual images.

For example, if you dream of food ready to burn in the oven of a stove that you remember from childhood, the condensed image of the stove can mean both that you yearn for the past and that the present state of your affairs is “hot”.

The stage of substitution in the interpretation of sleep according to Freud

It is a way in which we can alleviate our worries and anxieties by imagining them in a dream in a safe way. You express your urgent need, but you direct it to another person or to another object. For example, imagine that you have no idea how angry you are with your teenage son. In the world of the id instincts, you would feel that your anger is deadly. But instead of a dream in which you kill your child (which will make you anxious and wake up), you have a dream that Bevis and Boothead (his favorite TV characters) are killed in a skiing accident.

In short, when we make a substitution, we use the symbol as a substitute for the meaning of the dream. This is where the well-known Freudian symbolism comes from: any object that even remotely resembles a phallus is a symbol of the penis (guns, canes, the Eiffel Tower ..), and everything that even remotely looks like a receptacle symbolizes the vagina (cup, cave, box ..)..

Projection as a way of interpreting sleep according to Freud

It is similar to substitution, but it shortens the process by one step. In your dreams, when you project your oppressed fantasies onto someone or something else, you still dream about it, but you do not take responsibility for such shameful desires. Using the previous example of the murderous parent in the projection area, we can say that your son would have been beheaded, but not by you, but by someone else. A bit of a cruel example, isn't it? Just remember: these are just feelings that everyone is capable of experiencing from time to time. Naturally, you will never put them into action.

Freud's dream interpretation technique

In order to help his patients understand what their dreams mean, Freud suggested that they use the method of free association, that is, simply say the first thing that comes to mind about each image or action in a dream. When the clear content of dreams was analyzed by free association, the dream could be understood as an attempt to fulfill one's wish.

It is clear that the interpretation of dreams according to Freud's method is not an easy task. Freudian analysts go through a lot of training before they do it. But even a simple acquaintance with the methods of interpreting dreams can help you understand the meaning of your dreams.

The role of the subconscious in the interpretation of dreams according to Freud's dream book

What do an iceberg and a human soul have in common?

Give up? Okay, we'll tell you. They say that their invisible part is much larger than the visible one. In humans, that part of the iceberg (their soul) that remains invisible is called the "subconscious." And the visible part is the one that we know, our conscious thoughts. Although philosophers, writers and thinkers throughout history have alluded to the existence of the subconscious, it was Sigmund Freud who first developed the concept of the schema of the human soul and coined the term "subconscious".

Freud believed that nothing in our life happens by chance. All actions and thoughts are motivated by subconscious conflicts caused by aggression, sexual impulses and an unrelenting desire to have fun. He believed that in order for us to enter a civilized society, it is necessary to moderate our primitive appetites. But since people are unable to uproot them, they are forced to drive them into the depths of the soul.

He said that the difficulty of suppressing such a power structure as "id"

  • aggressive
  • sexual,
  • the pleasure-seeking core of our self)

is the reason that it appears here and there in disguise. This cannot be denied. She will find a way to express herself one way or another. Sometimes this slips into "Freudian slips". These reservations can arise both in reality and in our dreams.

But how can you know what is in your subconscious (and therefore what you really feel and want) if it by its nature should be hidden? A good place to start is to explore your dreams, according to Freud. He called sleep the "royal road to the subconscious" and believed that in your dreams you fulfill id wishes that you cannot recognize or fulfill in reality. Other parts of your soul, called "ego" and "superego" by Freud, lose their vigilance when you sleep. In other words, during sleep, your self-control weakens, and subconscious desires have the opportunity to break free and appear in your dreams.

But wait. If this is true, and you actually have a chance to fulfill your hidden desires in your dreams, then why do you sometimes dream

  • stupid,
  • inconsistent,
  • terrible 66 or tragic dreams?

Well, now things are getting really interesting.

Although, according to Freud, our inner watchman loses his vigilance during sleep, he still does not leave his post. Even in your dreams, you may feel regret and anxiety about the powerful desires or emotions that appear in your dreams. To protect sleep (remember, Freud once said that the purpose of dreams is to protect sleep), your soul makes your censor work overtime. In this way, you get the best of both worlds: dreams can be considered a compromise, because they express desires in a veiled form, they do not threaten you, and at the same time you sleep sweetly.

Why do you have disturbing dreams according to Freud?

And what about disturbing dreams - are they the fulfillment of desires? Freud could argue that they are disguised expressions of desire, but he also argued that disturbing dreams are the result of not good enough disguise, when repressed desires almost come to the surface, and here you go: you suddenly see yourself in which you are taking an exam, and you are completely unprepared for it, and besides, completely naked.

Freud also argued that disturbing dreams are the product of our repressed sexual impulses. This brings us to another source of criticism of Freud's theory that everything from a cigar to a toothpick symbolizes the phallus, and caves, jugs, pits and other containers symbolize the female genital organs.

Freud himself was a product of his gender, race, class and generation. His sexual preoccupation stemmed from the prudishness towards sex during the Victorian era and from his own attitude towards sex.

It is clear that the meaning he ascribed to these symbols can tell us more about him and his time than anything else. His assertion that women are a corrupted version of man, and his ignorance of the dynamics that exist between mother and daughter, certainly cast doubt on many of his conclusions.

Again, many of Freud's theories, including the theory of dreams, later aroused even stronger dislike - because he insistently tried to explain literally everything by our repressed sexuality and hidden desires. When it came to interpreting dreams, many turned to one of his followers, Carl Jung, for inspiration from his writings.

Freud's attitude to dreams and his assertion that they are of great importance in a person's life was amazing. But that doesn't mean he was 100% right. The idea that dreams are a "safe" form of wish fulfillment has been repeatedly criticized. You will be surprised to know that among these critics was Freud himself. Over the years, he ceased to be an ardent supporter of this idea.

I pay close attention >>>> in a dream, the Ceiling collapses on the Dreamer, but She immediately catches it and does it right, because the Ceiling is a "roof" (it's good that she didn't move out), and the Brother and his wife moved to another spacious Apartment - this is tough...

Freud's dream book was compiled by an Austrian psychiatrist and specialist in nervous disorders, who proposed a new, more scientific approach to the study of the human inner world. The first works of the Austrian physician concerned the localization of nerve functions in the human brain, the physiology and anatomy of the human CNS. This man first began to consider sexuality as an important part of the development of the human personality.

Part of the work of a psychologist is devoted to the study of the dreams of his patients. In this dream book, Freud presented a detailed analysis of the algorithms by which the human psyche is formed, and what causes them.

The main conclusion of the works of the Austrian neurologist is that a person sees in a dream what he cannot do, but what he really needs. Moreover, the dreamer himself may not even be aware of these unfulfilled desires, but they still live in him at an unconscious level. And in the world of dreams, a person can realize any of his fantasies, so the brain uses this mechanism to maintain a healthy state of mind.

However, Freud's dream book says that in night visions all human emotions take on the image of those events and things that we are not used to seeing in our everyday life. This can be called some kind of game of our unconscious and occurs because it is necessary to confuse the mind of the sleeping person, which acts as a kind of "controller" and does not allow the person to do what he wants.

In his book The History of an Illusion, Sigmund Freud explained that in a person's life there are many different prohibitions that are imposed on him by upbringing or a society that condemns certain things. And the more a topic is tabooed (for example, incest or murder), the more fantastic and unusual will be the plot of the dream and the images that appear in it. The psychiatrist believed that it was necessary to interpret the symbols he saw in the course of a complete psychoanalysis and without separation from the patient's personality, his character, habits and life path.

Freud's dream book and interpretation of dreams

The author argued that it is necessary to interpret the dream images based on erotic overtones. In his opinion, in the depths of the human subconscious there are a large number of sexual fantasies that he would like to realize, but for some reason cannot. All these aspirations, needs and desires are realized when a person is sleeping - that's where this approach comes from. Comparing symbols using an associative series, a psychologist is able to understand what a person is really striving for, what his actions are aimed at. In addition, a person will understand why he cannot achieve what he wants, and in the future he will be able to take this information into account in order to achieve success.

Types of dreams that are included in Freud's dream book

The compiler differentiated dreams into three main categories:

  • meaningful dreams that are easy enough to interpret;
  • visions that are difficult to connect with what happens to a person in reality, but at the same time have a coherent plot;
  • dreams that are difficult to decipher, as they represent a kaleidoscope of incoherent images and events.

The psychologist considered the latter group very important, since it often contains data on the patient's deepest experiences.

In the latest edition, Freud's interpreter consists of a list of dreamed images. All these symbols are interpreted in the works of the psychiatrist himself. The modern dream book exists so that the average person can get acquainted with the basics of psychoanalysis.

Sigmund Freud, like Loff's dream book, denied mysticism and did not like religion. He used his observations and the experience of fellow psychologists. That is why his interpreter is so popular.

To use it more efficiently, use the alphabetical index.
