1. History

1.1. Early history

The central building of the university - an architectural monument of the first half of the 19th century (classical style) - is an integral part of the empire ensemble of Poltava, built in 1828-1832 according to the project of the St. Petersburg architect Ludwig Charlemagne as a building for the Institute of Noble Maidens.

It was founded on December 12, 1818 by the wife of the Governor-General of Poltava and Chernigov provinces M.G. Repnina Varvara Alekseevna, the Institute for Noble Maidens in Poltava became the first among the provincial cities of the Russian autocratic empire a closed-type secondary educational institution for female noblewomen. During the centenary period of activity of the girl's institute, outstanding figures of Ukrainian, Russian and Czech cultures worked in it in different years. In particular, for more than 36 years, the well-known Ukrainian poet-fabulist, former rector of Kharkov University, Professor P. P. Gulak-Artemovsky has been constantly supervising the academic work. For many years, an outstanding Ukrainian and Russian poet and playwright V. Kapnist worked as a member of the noble Board of Trustees of the Institute.

The art of piano playing and Italian singing of schoolgirls was taught by well-known pianists and composers, collectors of Ukrainian folklore, the Czech brothers Edlichki - Alois and Wenceslav.

Artists Ivan Zaytsev, Ekaterina Roshchina, Vasily Volkov, engraver Splitstesser worked as teachers here, Levko Borovikovsky, the founder of Ukrainian romanticism, taught literature. The talented sisters Psel, Glafira and Alexandra, graduated from the Girls' Institute: one is an artist, the other is a poetess.

From these walls in 1861 came the famous Ukrainian writer-democrat Lyubov Yanovskaya. Over the years, the institute was visited by I.P. Kotlyarevsky, T. G. Shevchenko, N.V. Gogol, V. A. Zhukovsky, the Decembrists - brothers Sergey and Matvey Muravyov-Apostles.

1.2. 20th century

In January 1918, the Institute for Noble Maidens was evacuated to Vladikavkaz, where it initiated the foundation and development of the city's female gymnasium. From 1918 to 1930, the central building of the former institute housed a land management technical school, an orphanage, a gardening school and other institutions, organizations and institutions.

In the thirties, in the system of newly higher educational institutions, designed to meet the rapidly growing need for engineering and construction personnel for a huge construction site that became the entire USSR, Poltava became an allied center for the training of agricultural construction engineers. According to the decree of the government of the USSR dated July 23, 1930 under No. 237 on the formation of new higher educational institutions, the People's Commissariat for Agriculture of the Ukrainian government issued an order on August 19, 1930 on the creation of the Poltava Institute of Agricultural Construction. Rich in agricultural traditions and achievements, since 1920, the Poltava region has been preparing personnel for the village at the Agricultural Institute (with the Faculty of Agricultural Construction). It was this faculty, by the decision of the Poltava City Council, that was transferred to the premises of the former Institute of Noble Maidens - Pervomaisky Avenue, No. 24 (the central three-story building and two side one-story buildings not connected to the central building), which became the location of the new university.

Among the first teachers of the institute is a graduate of the Kyiv Polytechnic, a diploma student of an outstanding scientist-engineer E.A. Paton - M.S. Toryanik, who founded the scientific school of reinforced concrete at the institute, E.V. Platonov, a graduate of the Institute of Railway Engineers in Petrograd, founded the scientific school of foundations and foundations; former provincial architect of the city of Poltava T.Ya. Gardasevich - founder of the scientific school of architectural design; social disciplines at the institute were taught by O.K. Kasimenko , S.Yu. Danishev - later known domestic historians. In 1933-1934, the Faculty of Agricultural Construction of the Saratov Institute of Rural Construction, together with 200 students, was added to our educational institution. From 1934, the institute's library was headed by Yu. Zhilko, a teacher by education, a poet by vocation.

In 1938, he was arrested and shot by the decision of a special troika in the NKVD in the Poltava region with the accusation of "anti-Soviet propaganda" widespread at that time. Despite the losses experienced during the Holodomor and repressions, the Poltava Institute of Agricultural Construction Engineers confidently overcame its first decade. The number of departments at the institute increased, and in 1940 it was already 20 (mathematics, physics, chemistry, graphics, theoretical mechanics, structural mechanics, building materials, building production, etc.). More than 500 students studied at the institute. For the first ten pre-war years of teaching and educational activities, the staff of the Institute trained more than 800 graduates - civil engineers for the village.

Repnina Varvara Alekseevna, the Institute for Noble Maidens in Poltava became the first among the provincial cities of the Russian autocratic empire a closed-type secondary educational institution for female noblewomen. During the hundred-year period of activity of the girl's institute, outstanding figures of Ukrainian, Russian and Czech cultures worked in it in different years. In particular, for more than 36 years, the well-known Ukrainian poet-fabulist, former rector of Kharkov University, Professor P.P. Gulak-Artemovsky. For many years, an outstanding Ukrainian and Russian poet, playwright V.V. Kapnist. Artists Ivan Zaytsev, Ekaterina Roshchina, Vasily Volkov, engraver Splitstesser worked as teachers here, Levko Borovikovsky, the founder of Ukrainian romanticism, taught literature. The talented sisters Psel - Glafira and Alexandra graduated from the Girls' Institute: one is an artist, the other is a poetess. From these walls in 1861 came the famous Ukrainian writer - Democrat Lyubov Yanovskaya. In different years, the institute was visited by I.P. Kotlyarevsky, T.G. Shevchenko, M.V. Gogol, V.A. Zhukovsky, Decembrists - brothers Sergey and Matvey Muravyov-Apostles. In January 1918, the Institute of Noble Maidens was evacuated to Vladikavkaz, where it laid the foundation for the foundation and development of the city women's gymnasium. From 1918 to 1930, the central building of the former institute housed a land management technical school, an orphanage, a gardening school, and other institutions and organizations. In 30 years, in the system of recreated higher educational institutions, designed to meet the rapidly growing need for engineering and construction personnel for a huge construction site, which became the entire USSR, Poltava became an allied center for the training of agricultural construction engineers. According to the Decree of the USSR government No. 237 of July 23, 1930 on the establishment of new higher educational institutions, the People's Commissariat of Agriculture of the Ukrainian government issued an order on August 19, 1930 to establish the Poltava Institute of Agricultural Construction. Rich in agricultural traditions and achievements, since 1920, the Poltava region has been preparing personnel for work in the village at the Agricultural Institute (with the Faculty of Agricultural Construction). It was this faculty, by decision of the Poltava City Council, that was transferred to the premises of the former Institute of Noble Maidens - Pervomaisky Prospekt, No. 24 (the central three-story building and two side one-story buildings, not connected to the central building), which became the location of the new higher educational institution. Among the first teachers of the institute is a graduate of the Kyiv Polytechnic, a diploma student of an outstanding scientist-engineer E.A. Paton - M.S. Toryanik, who founded the scientific school of reinforced concrete at the institute, E.V. Platonov, a graduate of the Institute of Railway Engineers in Petrograd, founded a scientific school on basics and foundations; former provincial architect of the city of Poltava T.Ya. Gardasevich - founder of the scientific school of architectural design; social disciplines at the institute were taught by O.K. Kasimenko, S.Yu. Danishev - later known domestic historians. From 1934, the Institute's library was headed by Y. Zhilko, a teacher by education, a poet by vocation. In 1938, he was arrested and shot on the decision of a special troika in the NKVD in the Poltava region, accusation of "anti-Soviet propaganda" widespread at that time. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War on June 22, 1941, a heavy burden of responsibility for the evacuation of the staff to distant Uralsk fell on the shoulders of the teaching and student staff, the administration of the institute. Graduates-engineers, male teachers were mobilized to participate in the battles with the Nazis. Students, continuing to study, looked after the wounded, prepared fuel. On October 19, 1943, the staff of the Institute returned to Poltava, which they had to restore in the same way as the premises of the Institute were destroyed. The first post-war ten years of study, teachers and students worked in adapted rooms at st. Shevchenko, 8. Along with the restoration of the destroyed premises of the Institute of Agricultural Construction Engineers (since 1961 - Civil Engineering Institute), the staff of the educational institution grew and matured, its material base was strengthened and developed. During 1954-1971 new faculties are opened; industrial and civil construction, architectural, sanitary-technical, general technical, part-time with an evening department, advanced training, the efforts of the administration at this time organize the construction of a laboratory, right and left buildings, new dormitories for students.
