Bulgaria cannot boast of a long tourist season. The first tourists arrive in May, but the swimming season opens closer to mid-June, when the sea warms up to an acceptable temperature. In the presence of stable sunny weather, the beach season is sometimes extended until the end of September, but there are many cases when the season is completely “turned off” by the middle of the first autumn month.
As you can see from the graph below, the Black Sea off the coast of Bulgaria is not suitable for swimming for most of the calendar year. At the same time, it heats up very quickly, but also cools down rapidly in the fall.
Features of the warming of the Black Sea
Unfortunately, the Bulgarian coast is not suitable for those who want to swim during the May holidays. The water in the Black Sea by this time does not have time to warm up. At the beginning of the month, its temperature will not exceed +15⁰. In the southern resorts closer to the beginning of June, it can warm up to +20.
With the advent of summer, a full-fledged bathing season. In June, the temperature of sea water is steadily above +20⁰, and by its end it reaches +23⁰. True, on the northern coast at the beginning of the month, due to cold currents, unpleasant surprises are still possible. For example, after a storm, the sea can cool from 22 degrees to 16 degrees overnight, and there can be no talk of any swimming.
By the first numbers July the sea is already warm enough along the entire coast. Warm nights do not allow it to cool down, and even early in the morning it is quite comfortable to swim. During this period, there are no big differences between the water temperature in the resorts of the northern and southern coasts. By mid-July, it warms up to +25 degrees, and maybe even higher - in the south, values of +27⁰ are not uncommon.
To the middle august the water does not cool down, keeping at a high level - about + 25⁰. At the end of summer, the heat begins to subside, daylight hours are shortened, thunderstorms and precipitation are possible, so the sea begins to cool. By the end of August, on the entire Bulgarian Black Sea coast, the temperature is approximately the same - about +23⁰, the average monthly value is also +23⁰.
In early September, autumn only timidly reminds of itself with cold snaps at night. The sea is still warm, and the water temperature (~23⁰) is maintained until the middle of the month. It should be borne in mind that in the southern resorts (Burgas, Sozopol) the water is a couple of degrees warmer. But by the third decade of September, the weather usually deteriorates.. At the end of September, there are usually several beautiful sunny days, which serve as a gift for the closing of the swimming season. You can still swim for most of the month, but a lot depends on the weather conditions, which in the second half of the month is almost impossible to predict in advance.
First week October gives the last chance to swim in the warm waves. The sea, which has absorbed a huge amount of solar energy, cools down reluctantly, and at the beginning of the month on the southern coast it is quite comfortable for swimming, as the figure reaches +22⁰. Most likely, at the same time, the water will be colder off the coast of Varna, perhaps even around +18⁰. From mid-October, the nights become very cold and the temperature in the sea drops rapidly to +15⁰. Its average monthly value in October is only +15⁰. The beaches are completely empty and the season is considered completely closed.
November to April The Black Sea coast of Bulgaria is resting, so tourists prefer to relax in the ski resorts in Bansko. The exception is tourists who come to the coast for the sake of visiting treatment centers.
Calendar winter coming in December, brings a full-fledged winter to Bulgaria. It often rains and foggy days, and in the mountains a large layer of snow falls, ski slopes open. In the central part of the country, and even more so in the mountainous regions, the temperature is already dropping below zero. However, on the coast, for example, in Burgas and Varna, the air in December is warmed up to +8 degrees.
Swimming is no longer possible, but while away the evening on the coast with a glass of mulled wine made from excellent local wine - why not? Seaside resorts are empty in December and accommodation prices are more than cheap, but there are also those who like to relax at an average daily temperature of +12 degrees. Actually, coastal resorts have been empty since mid-October, when entire “cities” are closed, such as, say, Sunny Beach. Only a small part of the hotel base is alive for those who accidentally drop in and, of course, ski resorts and hotels.
Both in December and in January in Bulgaria it is best to master the ski slopes or enjoy excursions to local attractions. It must be remembered that the weather can bring an unpleasant surprise and the snowfall can be replaced by a cold wind with rain. In the capital Sofia, the temperature in January drops to -15 degrees, and on the coast it stays around 0 degrees.
In February snowfalls are not uncommon in the central and mountainous parts of Bulgaria, the water in the Black Sea is cold and in no way suitable for swimming and does not warm up above +6 degrees. The daily temperature in Sofia and Burgas also rises to +6 degrees.
