Name statistics in Russia: fashion for names, popularity of names

Should I choose a unique name for my child? Or maybe you need to give your baby a widespread, massive name so that it does not stand out? - This issue should be decided by the parents themselves. But we considered it our task to provide parents with information about the frequency of modern male and female names.

The popularity rating of newborn names (according to statistics from 2010-2017) can be found here:girls names, boys names.

And this page provides data on Russian names that are most common among young people aged 17 to 20 years. Interesting? Then read on.

A good idea of what names modern young people have can be obtained, for example, from an analysis of data on applicants in 2015 - candidates for admission to the country's two main universities - Moscow (MSU) and St. Petersburg (SPbGU).

The lists of applicants for bachelor's and master's programs were analyzed and processed, that is, the names of boys and girls born in 1995 - - 1998 were considered; these lists were posted on the official websitestach the admissions offices of both universities in the summer of 2015. Why was this particular age range chosen for analysis (17–20 years)? - Well, in particular, for such a simple reason that it is these young people who will become parents themselves in the coming years.

An analysis of the totality of three elements: personal name, patronymic and surname made it possible to identify with a high probability those applicants who which are named according to the Russian tradition(these include not only Russian applicants, but also Belarusians, Ukrainians, Jews, in some cases Yakuts, Ossetians, Tatars), in contrast to persons with names that are not found in Russian families ( Armenian, Georgian, Kalmyk, Tuvan, Buryat names, names of Muslims of the Volga region, the North Caucasus and Central Asia, etc.).

As a result, about 21,000 female and 25,000 male "Russian" names remained in the total sample (in the full list of applicants). This amount of data is quite sufficient to draw certain statistical conclusions. The results are given in tabular form:

100 most common female names

One newborn was named Orpheus, after the famous musician from ancient Greek mythology. Also on the list of rare names were Franklin, Forward and Nord.

When choosing an unusual name for a child, parents are most often guided not by fashion trends, but by the desire to give their son or daughter a beautiful, yet uncommon name, ”explained Irina Muravyova, head of the Moscow registry office.

HAVE AN OPINION

Forward, son of Velesvet. What do I need in your name

Column by "VM" columnist Mikhail Vinogradov

Evangeline! - shouted, turning her head, a tall stooped woman, apparently a grandmother. - Come, sit down here!

I shuddered and looked at the subway car in a haunted manner. I wanted to shake my head to let the water flow out of my ears, but it wasn't there. “Maybe Eva Angelina?” I reassured myself. When I myself was the age of this "Evangeline" in a purple ski suit, the girls around me responded to Lena, Masha, or - in the most extreme case - Nonna ().

Give me a human name, mom

Column by "VM" columnist Anna Povago

There will be no more Dolphins Ivanovich and Sofiy-Solnyshek Nikolaevna in the capital: the State Duma nevertheless approved a bill banning naming children with non-standard and ridiculous names. That's not all: the document will be finalized by the second reading, and the list of incorrect names will be expanded ().

All names are divided into five conditional groups: the most popular (1-30th place), popular (31-60th place), less popular (61-85th place), rare and very rare names. Such a classification is practically convenient and visual. Quantitative data are given to a common denominator - per 10,000 newborns. In order to better “feel” the figures, we point out that approximately 70,000 boys , and in the entire Voronezh region, almost 1 of them is born per year 3 000.
