As for the interior space, Renault is ahead of Aveo here. There is more free space here, and fewer protruding corners. But the shape of the Chevrolet seats is more comfortable, during a long trip it is felt by the spine.

Due to inexpensive plastics and faded dark colors, both cars barely live up to "satisfactory". But Chevrolet still has a so-called design, which is completely absent in the Logan that we collect. And Renault can be noted for the size of the rear sofa, even three do not feel cramped there.

Feelings while driving

Noise isolation of both machines, whether Aveo or Logan, leaves much to be desired. When driving, passengers in the back must raise their voice if they want to be heard by those who “enjoy” the engine noise in front. Chevrolet still hears. But he is far from perfection.

The maximum 180 km / h is drawn on the speedometer of the subjects rather for the sake of appearance. It is not recommended to develop so much on them due to instability on the track at high speeds. But one way or another, Aveo during high-speed driving will be more stable and reliable than an opponent. At speeds up to 150 km / h, you can feel relatively safe, the car does not “float” when cornering.

Logan has an early clutch setting. This is very inconvenient when driving through a traffic jam. The foot on the pedal is in constant tension. Otherwise, the frequently changing one cannot be controlled. Aveo does not have this and everything is much more convenient.

Road flaws in the form of bumps and pits are well smoothed out by pendants for both. Both cars here are worthy of a score slightly above average. But the Korean suspension is still softer.

What's under the hood, bottom and more

Both models have 1400cc engines. And 1.6 liters of their versions. But Chevrolet, due to its higher torque compared to Renault, will be more powerful. And acceleration to a hundred in 13 seconds is not so bad for this class.

When I first saw the updated "Aveo" at one of the European car dealerships, I was pleasantly surprised by the bold design of the baby: it looks like it will bite its neighbor on the stand. It must be admitted that the designers have groped for an artistic line by which the new models of the company are unmistakably recognized. In addition, many owners should be impressed by the similarity of the Aveo with the spectacular older brother of the Chevrolet Cruze.

Behind the half-open door, a mature interior awaits: a solid front panel, interesting embossed plastic, and strict instruments. In the driver's seat you feel like in a more adult car. But already on the first kilometers along the streets of the metropolis, the obvious disadvantages of Aveo appeared. Firstly, visibility: looking into the modest exterior mirrors, it is not easy to assess the situation one hundred percent, and massive front pillars annoy at unregulated intersections. Secondly, a tall driver rests his right knee on the console. Thirdly, air conditioning: it would seem that a primitive system with a couple of buttons cannot be spoiled by anything, but here, when the glass blower is turned on, the air conditioner is forcibly activated. Everything would be fine, but the loss of engine thrust is painfully noticeable.

As for the 1.4-liter engine, it has an even character, preferring medium speeds. The gear ratios of the box were chosen so that you often have to wield the lever. Not to say that it causes a lot of pleasure: you make sweeping movements, you often find passes on the second attempt, especially when you are not used to it. Steering, as trite as it sounds, begins with the visual impression of the steering wheel. Huge, thin in cross section, it speaks eloquently about the character of Aveo. Let's check?

Until it comes to really active driving, Chevy inspires confidence. There are no serious rolls, the reactive force is quite sufficient.

But it’s worth a little stronger and sharper to reject the steering wheel from “zero”, you will get an unpleasant surprise in the form of a sharp skid. On slippery spring asphalt, you can park the car sideways at a speed of less than 50 km / h. The situation could be saved by a stabilization system, but all the tested models, including Aveo, are deprived of it.

Alas, not all exhibition hits are ready to prove their capabilities on the road. It turns out that in pursuit of external data, an engineering-perfect filling remained behind the Chevrolet.

SPORTS

I had a chance to ride a KIA-Rio a few years ago, when the sedan was put on the IzhAvto conveyor. Since then, a lot of gasoline has leaked - the model was no longer assembled in Russia, then imported from Korea: there was no demand. And now - the second coming of "Rio", this time with a hatchback body. A couple of cosmetic surgeries on the bumper and headlights, and a trick appeared in the "face" of the car. But the salon is still sad, like the attendant on the escalator in the subway. This is especially felt against the background of the stylish Aveo. The kingdom of hard plastic was only slightly cheered up by beautiful bright instruments and a tenacious three-spoke steering wheel. However, you forgive the insipidity of the Rio interior for a comfortable driver's seat against the background of the Aveo with a hint of lateral support, a much better view and, most importantly, ease of movement.

First of all, I note the motor: it is with a twinkle. At low revs, the engine is half asleep, but as soon as the tachometer needle crosses the 3000 mark, it wakes up and urges you to turn the crankshaft to the limiter. The gearbox drive, of course, is far from the standard German one, but the progress compared to the pre-styling car is obvious: the shifts have become more accurate, the quick change of gears does not cause synchronizers to protest. "Rio" willingly responds to provocative actions by the wheel, does not frighten, unlike "Aveo", with a sharp skid and allows you to accurately choose the trajectory when avoiding obstacles. If you enter the turn at the limit, the car will float out smoothly, but allow you to correct the situation. There is no ABS in the test copy (oops!), However, subjectively, the braking performance in critical modes of the Rio is not much worse than that of the Aveo.

As is often the case, good driving inclinations come at the expense of smoothness. The car is good at city speeds, but after 100 km / h the shaking intensifies and tires in country trips. The situation improves slightly when fully loaded, however, for long trips, the Aveo is preferable. In addition, the rear seat of the Rio is frankly cramped, and the trunk is modest in volume.

I imagine a typical KIA Rio owner: he prefers an active ride and is ready to sacrifice excess luggage and a big company for a sporty lifestyle that he does not forget even while driving a car.

PLEASANT (Renault Sandero )

What arguments “against” were most often heard against Renault Logan when the car was just entering the Russian open spaces? Unpretentious appearance, modest interior. Even for relatively little money, we want to get from the car, if not aesthetic pleasure, then at least elementary satisfaction. Moreover, we are ready to pay extra for it! The initial price level of 5,000 euros (there was such, albeit in Romania) has long been forgotten, but the Renault Sandero hatchback, accepted with a bang, first in South America and then in Europe, has replenished the model range.

There is almost no doubt that success awaits Renault Sandero in Russia as well. I was convinced of this on the way from the capital to the training ground - almost everyone looked at the car at traffic lights, and even the owners of the "Logans" swarmed at the "Sandero" like bees around a hive. It makes no sense for them to look into the car - the interior of the Sandero repeats the current Logan one to one, with all the minuses and pluses.

The first ones include specific French ergonomics: a sound signal at the end of the steering column light control lever; buttons for the front power windows on the console and the rear ones on the box at the feet of the passengers of the second row; climate controls at the bottom of the console. But the steering wheel is now adjustable in height, a third head restraint has appeared in the back row, and full-fledged handles have finally “grown” at the front doors instead of poor stampings - the subject of eternal banter over the pre-styling Logan.

If KIA is tough in interior and gait, then Renault is like a plush toy. Glancing at the soft contours of the front panel, you sit in a comfortable chair and enjoy the delightful softness of the move. At any speed, on almost any road, the Sandero rushes, not noticing holes and patches, imperceptibly jumping over speed bumps. Should we expect driving revelations from Renault? Yes! With all the friendliness of the suspension and the large gear ratio of the steering mechanism, it is not difficult to cope with the Sandero, it is predictable and obedient in sliding. The “long” steering wheel is somewhat annoying when parking in tight conditions, but at full speed there is not even a hint of nervousness. Perhaps the only inconvenience for the driver is the too light and long-stroke clutch pedal. It is difficult to feel the moment of setting, so the start often comes out ragged.

Passengers will also definitely choose Sandero: it is convenient to get into it thanks to wide openings, there is plenty of space both above the head and in the legs. The undisputed leader of Renault and in terms of trunk volume. On such a machine, I want to fly to work on weekdays and to the cottage on weekends, enjoying independence from wires and rails.

Chevrolet Aveo LS 1.4 16V AT

One glance at Aveo is enough to understand that it is the most modern in our four. This is felt in the exterior (designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and ItalDesign), and especially in the cabin. The front fascia is twice as deep as the others, the A-pillars are heaped up in modern fashion and safety requirements, but without obstructing the view. Aveo manages to appear bright, even despite the dark trim, and spacious, although it is difficult to call the cabin particularly roomy. With a height of 180 cm, the landing “by itself” immediately says: the legs are cramped. And gently sloping, again in modern fashion, massive rear pillars and a sloping roof limit headroom. But if the rear seats are given to women and children, there are no special problems with free space.

The driver's landing is relatively high and vertical, but it does not cause any complaints - these are the "rules of the game" in this class. The steering wheel is adjustable only vertically, but finding a comfortable position is easy. The seats are more elastic than comfortable-hard - in our test they can be attributed to the middle peasants. They obviously “do not suffer” from an excess of lateral support, but ... how often do you remember it in a car with a similar character?

And the character of the little Chevy, to put it mildly, is not groovy. Let, again, due to its modernity, the second in the four in terms of "subcompact" 1399-cc engine honestly gives 101 horsepower, second only to the Sandero, but this can be seen only by filling out a road tax receipt. On the move, all these “horses” are frankly upset by a four-speed “automatic”. By the way, also the only one in our test. No, no, it’s not bad at all - the shifts are smooth, there is no jerkiness, demanding pressing the pedal revives the “kickdown” at a quite acceptable speed. It’s just that the automatic transmission is also trying to behave in a modern politically correct way, preventing the small engine from spinning up to those speeds where it starts to live for real. As a result, fuel consumption is still by no means the smallest, and acceleration turned out to be melancholy. The machine seems to be constantly pulling on a rubber band attached to the back. And out-of-town overtaking with three passengers in the cabin becomes a maneuver that requires a very advance calculation. Yes, it is possible to limit the range to third, second or even first gear, but in practice, it is unlikely that any of the owners will bother with such passes. Eh, here at least five gears and gear ratios closer! After all, the chassis is very good! To the best of elastic, moderately stiff suspension honestly fulfills irregularities, preventing rolls more than expected. Maybe because the "suspension" Aveo behaves competently, and you want more dynamics. But, alas, the extreme left row for Chevy is not at all “its own element”.

If the ambitions of the “left row” are alien to you, then the politically correct Aveo will not cause many complaints. Here, perhaps, the best head light in our test - again due to modern optics. Here, unlike all the others, there is a simple and unpretentious sound, but still a full-time (not “breaking” the general appearance of the cabin) media system that can read MP3. Here is a remote control for a rather large trunk lid, conveniently folding mirrors in parking lots. Absolutely logical control of temperature and air flow, concise and well-read instrument panel. Modern car, whatever one may say.

Prices and service

You have to pay for modernity. Aveo, the only one from far abroad (our copy was assembled in Korea) is the most expensive among our four city kids. Nearly 500,000 rubles - more than one and a half "Chance". There is a cheap version, from 385,000, but it is with a 1.2 liter engine. All vehicles come with a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty. Servicemen do not note any special "family diseases", except, perhaps, sometimes the fog lamps burn out clearly before the expiration date.

In a word, in our quartet Chevrolet Aveo has become “just a car” with only two objective drawbacks: a high price and not quite a suitable “automatic”. Is being normal a bad thing?

Fiat Albea Comfort 1.4

No, after all, Italians know how to make not only fashionable things! Albea is not just a ready-to-wear car, its design is timeless and fashionable. This car could have been ten years ago, maybe today, and perhaps these forms will be relevant in another ten years. Plainness, inconspicuousness, soft rationality - this is the Fiat Albea. With this car, you will not be called a retrograde, you will not be reproached for your inability to save up for something more, you will not be ridiculed as a show off. For traffic police inspectors, by the way, this appearance is also “transparent”, it does not attract attention.

But inside - in our four - Fiat is the clear leader in terms of comfort! Usually the word "sofa" in cars denotes an indistinct roll. But, sitting in the "Fiatik", you feel on the couch not in an offensive way for the typewriter, but in the most cozy, homely sense of the word. The seat cushions are soft, although the backs provide surprisingly good lateral support. Soft move, but more on that later. The amount of “minced meat” of the “Comfort” version will give odds to all three rivals. Here and electric mirrors (which at the same time also fold compactly), and separate lamps for the driver and passenger in a common ceiling unit. And even a simple on-board computer, which, however, did not learn to speak Russian on a car assembled in Naberezhnye Chelny. There are no problems with finding a comfortable fit, there is enough space in the back, although rear headrests are not provided even in the “top” version.

Interior design is also timeless. The combination of absolutely smooth and textured plastic looks a little old-fashioned, and the upholstery of the doors and the ceiling could be more pleasant to the touch, but nothing causes critical rejection.

In move

On the go, the Albea is an interesting compromise. Softness is also present in the habits of the little car - it works out road bumps very easily. It's not the compromised springiness of the Sandero, the springiness of Chance, or the "muscularity" of the Aveo. This is again the ideology of comfort. Even the usual “test speed bumps” on the way home, I passed 10-15 kilometers per hour faster on Albea than on the rest of the trinity. Everything remains somewhere below (of course, as much as the small dimensions and weight of the machine can allow). But for such softness, retribution in the form of rolls is inevitable. Yes, they are expected and predictable, but still they very clearly demonstrate that the machine does not like sudden movements at all. Riding Albea is the very case when it is better to “measure seven times” and predict a dangerous situation than to sharply maneuver at the last moment.

At the same time, the smallest (1368 cm3) and low-power (77 hp) motor is by no means embarrassed by its modest “objective data”. You can even call him smart. True, the "life" of this engine, as expected, begins one and a half to two thousand revolutions higher than that of the others - as it should be for small engines, it is quite "torsional". To match him and the gearbox. Maybe the lever moves are too long, but there were no problems with the clarity of inclusion.

The cabin is fairly quiet. More precisely, it would be quiet if our Fiat were not shod in winter "studded boots" Amtel Nordmaster. The snow was almost gone, and the roar of these tires was not an urgent call to “change shoes”, but a blatant blackmail - under the threat of a “brain explosion”!

Details

A small “fiatik” is the record holder in our group in terms of the number of different shelves, drawers and containers. And its 515-liter boot is one of the most spacious in its class. The rear seats fold down piece by piece, but this is where all the sedans in our test have parity. We considered it not correct to talk about the sound quality, since the CD-player is not standard, but installed as an option, and its level remains to the taste and capabilities of the owner.

Prices and service

Fiat Albea is sold in three versions: Base, Classic and Comfort. The engines and transmissions are the same, the differences are in the trim level. The cheapest one starts from 366,500 rubles. Our test was visited by the “top-end” Comfort, which was also painted in “metallic”. The cost of such a machine is 436,300 rubles. Albea has not yet identified any special “diseases”, but the cost of maintenance, as well as the prices for some spare parts, are still a bit high.

Although the “big” Albea, of course, does not strive to appear, but in terms of comfort it is the favorite in our four. If in exchange for this comfort you are willing to sacrifice an active and sharp driving style.

Renault Sandero Expression 1.6 16V

The Sandero is new to showrooms, and as such, it could be a key figure in our test. But the novelty from Renault differs from the rest and more importantly - it's a hatchback. Let it be as unified as possible with the closest, very well-known relative to us, but the whole appearance of a small five-door seems to be trying to declare: no, I'm not Logan! "Sandero" seeks to stake out a more sporty, youthful image than a reliable, practical, but boring "brother". There are indeed issues with utility here. The trunk against the background of the trinity of sedans is symbolic. And there is no possibility to fold part of the rear seat in the Expression package. But the space for the rear riders, although not as much as in Fiat, is still quite enough.

Inside, there is the same uncomplicated realm of plastic with silver trim as the restyled Logan. The same high landing ... Yes, the steering wheel almost between the knees is clearly not combined with the “driver's” mission of the machine, but such a landing is inevitable when trying to provide maximum space in a compact cabin.

In move

You move off, release the light and informative clutch pedal and you understand that you have met, albeit with a lightweight, but still a fighter. The body, shortened by 27 cm compared to the sedan, gives the car more collected habits, and the 16-valve and most powerful engine in our four gives decent dynamics. As they say: only one horsepower (102 against the background of 101 for Aveo) - and what different characters! The Sandero is punchy, with a five-speed manual transmission paired well with the 1600cc engine. The “Logan” suspension, known for its phenomenal energy intensity for this class of cars, is also on top here! Let the nature of her work have changed somewhat - again due to a shorter body and a minimal rear overhang. The machine and the driver reminds of its “driver” character - at least the vibration transmitted to the gear lever and the businesslike buzz of the motor. It seems that they did not particularly strive to get rid of the penetration of this sound into the salon, here it plays to create a certain mood. And it works: on the Sandero you want to “light up”, since the light steering wheel provides a clear connection with the wheels, and the brakes are the most understandable and tenacious. In our four, a little bully from Renault is the undisputed leader in the driver’s car nomination!

Details

All the little things are also familiar from Logan. Once again, we note the desire of the French for small quirks. The power window and central locking buttons on the center console can still be understood. But the signal, stubbornly continuing to "live" at the end of the steering column switch, as it was a controversial decision, remained. I wonder if for many drivers it is more normal to look for it there (especially in emergency situations, when the signal is usually needed) than on the steering wheel pad? But this is Renault, and it is unlikely that such a “chip” will be abandoned in the foreseeable future.

The kaleidoscope of control symbols on the dashboard is also funny. It may take a fair amount of time to study this scattering of pictograms on three surfaces (the central display and the lower sectors of the speedometer and tachometer), but the question of which part of them is really involved, and which is placed only in tribute to the great god of unification, will still remain dominant.

For the "younger" 1.4 liter engine, two types of equipment are provided - Authentique and Expression. For 1.6-liter engines (eight or sixteen valves), Expression is already the starting version, above which is Prestige. Gearbox - only manual, "automatic" is promised in the near future. And he met the same open, slightly surprised smiles, without a hint of contempt or an attempt to recognize me as inferior. "Zaporozhets" is nostalgia, including for the already legendary "humpback", which was a quarter of a century ago and my first car. And Chance is nostalgia for the twentieth century, from which the design of the Chevrolet Lanos, which has now become a native of the independent and independent, comes from. Blurred forms, the realm of smooth lines inside and out. And - simplicity. Peculiar to that era, and the status that is given to "Chance" in our four - the most budgetary. “Almost halves” from the young Aveo, which is a kind of great-nephew for Lanos / Chance.

Soft, almost amorphous seats, the maximum conciseness of the controls ... They say that "Chances" will soon be seen in a taxi. I don’t know how comfortable it will be for passengers in terms of space - there is not much of it in the “neo-Zaporozhets”, but the littered, washed out rear pillars do not exactly contribute to the convenience of landing in the rear seats.

What is curious: cars with a Korean engine are almost 10% cheaper than “Ukrainian” ones at the cost of scheduled maintenance. And it makes me think...

Choose which of them is closer in character to you, which traits are more important. Dynamics or price, comfort or handling…

Of our four, so small against the backdrop of city skyscrapers, Renault Sandero was recognized as the most driver-driven - which is what the manufacturers were striving for. If comfort is more important than a newfangled look, pay attention to Fiat Albea - it is the best in this nomination. If your choice is to look modern, and besides, you need an “automatic” rather than a “handle”, then there is no alternative among our competitors for the Chevrolet Aveo, and forget about its melancholy. Well, if the priority is a car for the most affordable money, then here “Chance” leaves no chance for rivals.
